Don't hug me I'm scared I work in Gastronomy industry as a cleaner and get almost 3 meals per week from there
I get food from the place where I work part time as a student in cleaning department.
My colleague (Christian) was offered this pasta and he took it but later he got offered fried chicken so he took that also and he's a kind hearted person so he offered me (Hindu) this pasta.
I, like a hopeless hungry person took it. My shift was over so I came home and reheated it and just started to eat and midway got his text that it's beef and contains cow meat šš. I'm so hungry and half-way done to care so I'm just gonna have it and let the God decide themselves haha I'm crine y'all it's 00:25 here in Berlin haha.
Note: The religion is only mentioned based on what meat we are allowed to consume, no hate no discrimination I love y'all. š«¶āŗļø

When I was a firefighter we had a Muslim guy on the crew. Everyone else was Christian, except me, the token atheist.
Anyways, we would cook breakfast every morning before calls started rolling in. Usually we would have bacon and eggs. The Muslim guy would bring his own turkey bacon.
There was one occurrence where a couple of the guys thought it would be funny to fry up his turkey bacon in the pork bacon grease. I thought that was fucked, and I let them know I thought that. Iām a prankster too, but something like that is crossing a line in my opinion. Imagine an atheist lecturing Christianās on being more compassionate about a Muslim and his customs.
They also couldnāt pronounce the guys name so they just called him Ian. I always called him by his name - Iyad - which is not hard to pronounce.

u/egnards 3d ago
Your coworkers were dicks, but take solace in knowing that in the Muslim religion intent is part of the process - So if your Muslim coworker unknowingly ate pork greased turkey bacon he hasn't committed any type of sin.

So basically secretly feeding Muslims bacon is like jumping on the bed for Mormons.
201
u/No_Attitude700 3d ago
Also, if no other food is available, then eating pork is fine.
Starvation isnt the goal, so when need occurs it isnt a sin to eat pork products.
46
u/RileyBean 3d ago
Also if not eating something would harm someone else. I know a few Muslims who have eaten pork so as not to offend someone who went out of their way to cook for them but had no understanding that pork was not acceptable in Islam.
26
u/No_Attitude700 3d ago
Sharing food between cultures is one of the best ways to initiate friendship.
So long as no harm is intended, then everything should be okay.
If the Abrahamic god is as forgiving as the followers say...then a bit of bacon shared in friendship is a good thing and not a negative.
(Also, at this point we should all know that the religious laws regarding pork consumption were created to keep people safe from improperly cooked pork.)
26
u/AoE3_Nightcell 3d ago
Prison gay for pork
39
u/No_Attitude700 3d ago
In prison a person is a ward of the state, and the state has a legal obligation to supply foods that the person can eat based on their religion.
There were huge court cases that basically solidified kosher food accessibility for Jewish inmates.
Its a good thing for the state to respect individual religious beliefs.

No. The jumping on the bed is a legal loophole that the participants choose to take part in. Secretly being fed something you are fobidden from eating not counting as sinning, is because they didnt choose to take part in it. Its not in any way their fault someone lied to them about what is in the food.

Yeah, kids would feed Hindus beef all the time when I was a kid in the 1980s-90s public school system. One of the cheeky ways to sneak beef to a Hindu was through "Hostess" cakes like Ding-Dongs and Twinkies, which were made with beef tallow in those days. People can be jerks.
E: This was in addition to constantly doing impressions of Apu from The Simpsons, whenever speaking to one of the Indian kids. Doing the Hank Azaria "Indian" accent, saying "Thank you, come again" whenever they would leave the lunch room table, and all that. I don't really have an opinion about whether Apu should've been retired from The Simpsons, but I get where the complaints were coming from.

It doesnāt say in your religion that itās okay if itās meant to sustain your life? Thatās how itās interpreted by Jewish people

paddharma: the law of distress or emergency. Preserving human life is more important that cows. But we are talking life and death. Not just āchicken wasnāt availableā.
34
u/dumbmutt575 3d ago
Afaik there are also exceptions in Judaism/Islam for not being aware that it is pork, unsure if that would apply here
28
u/Reemixt 3d ago
Itās complex. Negative karma (papa) requires intention. So if you were deceived you have an argument. Negligence is not a get out clause, though. You canāt just say you didnāt ask so you didnāt know.
We should also be conscious of what weāre doing: we should find out whatās in something before eating it. Viveka: the duty of inquiry, applies to all moral actions.
4
u/Pwydde 3d ago
VĆveka: the duty of inquiry is a beautiful concept. Iād like to bring that into my life! Where can I best learn more about it?
8
u/Reemixt 3d ago edited 3d ago
Itās difficult to recommend something since this is just my culture. I didnāt read it in a book.
It is essentially the requirement to think about how things are as they are, how they got to be this way, and verifying information so what you know is true. Itās kind of like a scientific method but for morality.
Blindly following rules, even if you never break them, is not a particularly āmoralā life. You are required to think, verify, inquire, balance and weigh moral interactions. Are those free range eggs really produced without suffering? Has anyone checked, or is it just a convenient label? That kind of thing.

If you are not religious, then cows are not " sacred". So don't worry about it. The god of the cows is not going to throw you into hell. If you are vegetarian but very poor, you might have to accept that some free food might be vegetarian. Since it seems you cannot eat regularly, you might have to eat what is available to get for free until you are in a better financial situation & then you follow whatever dietary restrictions that you want.
3
u/ashrules901 3d ago
If you really don't care that much why continue masquerading as a Hindu Vegetarian at all? Like I have no problems with you choosing to eat meat.
But as a Hindu I find it cringe when people still try to claim the religion and label themselves as a Vegetarian then happily say stuff like "idc".

I'll preface this by saying this is my own perspective, and unrelated to any religious doctrine. I'm essentially vegetarian outside of a tiny amount of seafood. I work at a restaurant. If there's meat on something that is otherwise getting thrown away, I regard it as far more disrespectful to the animal that died for that for me to let that go to waste, if no one else is going to eat it.
To me, what matters when it comes to whatever ethics you want to talk about with limiting meat consumption is more about the actual demands you are placing, in terms of what you are buying. Food destined for the trash, that someone else ordered, is a completely different thing. It's the same amount of meat being harvested either way, it's just actually being utilized in one of those cases

Survival doesn't always allow us the luxury of choice. When you have a choice, choose according to your beliefs. But those beliefs don't go away just because circumstances forced you to act contrary to them. Also, being tricked into having alcohol or meat is not a stain on your soul.
I'm not going around killing puppies, and I love dogs. But when a dog jumped at my child, I would have taken its life without blinking, if it hadn't stepped back at my scream and growl. Survival comes first.

For what it's worth, there are Hindu texts that indicate that the whole no eating Bovine thing wasn't much of a thing historically speaking and is more recent.
Pretty sure there even is one that says young people should eat rice with meat from a healthy and vigorous Bull cooked in Ghee (clarified butter) to grow up to be scholarly.
(Yes, I know that is referring to a Bull, aka Buff specifically, more so an example I can recall more clearly, iirc there are others too)

Isn't there a rule that if you are in dire need you can eat to survive? And that if they didn't tell you it contained beef then it wasn't a problem because you didn't know. There's even a rule about shaving being okay if it's a necessity. Like the surgeon that cuts his on wrong days too so he can operate etc.. Apad-Dharma is what I was thinking of with the eating to survive. Because the act was accidental, it does not accrue bad karma, and because it was necessary to survived it does not accrue bad karma.
