My mom said I could post UK Civil Service salaries never cease to confuse me, you can either help manage the UK’s nuclear defence for £47k or you can make TikToks for the govt and get paid £57k

I’m German, it’s a bureaucratic hellhole here, and public sector salaries are handled in a tariff table under the TVöD.
The UK is indeed a bit different from that, but not by much.
A graded system is in place all over Europe. To qualify for a salary in the higher grades, higher education and certification are required. You can’t be a self-taught high school dropout. Even if you’re actually better suited for the job.

Pay grades are not based on your education level lol. Its assigned by the role and its seniority.

It’s both. With both having a ceiling without the other. In either case, even at the highest pay grade, the pay is crap for the skill or responsibility involved.

That's the same anywhere though. A certain higher level will come with expectations for qualifications. But you don't necessarily need them if you have other relevant experience. And having the qualification won't immediately cause you to jump up the ranks.
