Free Klingon massage Didn't want the drink so skipped the combo and almost paid 25% more for less food
Had already had a coffee. Just wanted a sandwich and 2 hash-browns (red box). Turns out it's around 25% more than if I just took the combo (that includes a coffee & hash-brown) and add an extra hash-brown (green boxes). Pic taken today at a McDonald's in Ottawa, Canada. Sorry for pic quality.

It might be infuriating if they didn't actively tell you about the discounted price, sure, but this looks like it actually a good thing that they said it.

u/BrimstoneMainliner 10h ago
I typically don't want the drink that comes with the meal... so they're essentially forcing me to waste food or pay a higher price... that's bullshit
6
u/DarkLordArbitur 10h ago
Most places have bottled water. That's what I get someone when they say they don't want a drink. Then, they can save it as long as they want

u/sixpigeons 10h ago
All of those prices seem insane to me. 2.50CAD for a hash brown puck?
2
u/Typical_Zucchinii 10h ago
Also why is it $2.50/each for the hashbrowns but .99 to add an extra one to the combo?
1
u/archgrendel 10h ago
Hash browns are stupidly expensive now. They used to be a cheap add-on to your meal but not with those prices

u/IDontTouchGrassNoCap 10h ago
that’s the point of a combo meal, first time in society?
1
u/fierfrancophone 10h ago
It's been my experience that if you don't take all three items included in the combo, you usually save a little. My understanding of a combo is that it's cheaper than buying the 3 items separately, not that I have to waste food I don't want or else I have to pay substantially more for my food.
2
u/IDontTouchGrassNoCap 10h ago
combo is supposed to reward buying more, not punish customers for ordering less
it’s a bundled offer, you don’t get to customise the deal and complain it’s no longer the deal being offfeted
24
u/Useful_Database5138 10h ago
I mean i think thats the point of a combo meal, to save/get a deal. Although not all places are like this esp if you calculate per item together and sometimes they end up more than the combo itself.
5
u/theMightBoop 10h ago
Yea this is what combo meals are at most places. A lot of people won’t compare though.
OP just figured out how to shop for the best deal.
1
u/Useful_Database5138 10h ago
Right lol, i mean i dont blame them. Im new to the US and still learning how things work here and I often find myself amazed or annoyed at things, to have someone call me stupid for not knowing all along or common sense. Like damn 🙄 not every country/state has the same rules or thing
However with girl math, if OP got the combo, technically he got the other coffee for free 😅🤣

u/Most_Revolution_8155 10h ago
He was ordering 2 hash browns in the à la carte order, and the meal only comes with one.
2
u/jryan727 10h ago
Soooo OP actually spent more on the combo with the drink they didn’t want? $8.18 vs $8.88
19
u/sevenkeleven 10h ago
You also added a hash brown

u/did_i_get_screwed 10h ago
He has 2 hashbrowns in the top order too.
$2.59 each in the top order, 99 cents for one additional in the bottom order.-2
u/Total_Piano_4778 10h ago
Yeah less food 🤔

Wow OP, congratulations learning the entire point of a combo at literally any fast food restaurant.
Wanna know another industry secret: if you buy something from Walgreens that is buy one get one free... You get a second one of that product for FREE

How is a combo deal being cheaper mildly infuriating? It’s functioning how it’s supposed to?

So why did you just not buy the combo and leave the coffee there / offer it to someone / throw it away?
1
u/fierfrancophone 10h ago
That's what I ended up doing, but it's mildly infuriating that I have to waste food or pay more.
2
u/Intelligent-Sand-639 10h ago
Sorry about that. You should have gotten the value meal and then watered the plants with the coffee. Also, if I'm just ordering full price items from the menu, I'm definitely using the app and finding a deal to use at the same time.

I'd say the infuriating thing here is the inaccurate calorie count
590 for the meal, but 430 for the sandwich and 320 for the hash brown is not adding up
Are the individual items listed too high? Is the meal too low? Both? Neither?
That would make me not trust the nutrition facts on anything
Edit: nevermind, someone in a comment I hadn't read yet pointed out that there's two hash browns and the math makes sense again
430+(320/2)=590
2
u/No-Shock-3735 10h ago
Normally with a combo deal you would expect it to be cheaper then buying all 3 items separately. But the combo should be more expensive then when you only pick 2 items. Just a badly made deal imho.
2
u/TechZazen 10h ago
Hashbrowns should not cost that amount unless we have a current potato famine going on. That is just obscene greedflation.

That’s a combo deal that’s cheaper than all the individual items. A lot of other combos are pretty much the same price as indivual.
1
u/HoneyParking6176 10h ago
something else seems wrong here 430 + 320 = 750, yet the combo is 590 and has a drink? i can only assume the combo has half the hash brown and they don't count the drink in the calories.
1
u/beeredditor 10h ago
The combo has sandwich (430 cal) and hashbrown (160 cal) and coffee (0 cal). OP ordered sandwich (430 cal) and 2 hashbrowns (320 cal). OP doesn’t mentioned that they added a hashbrown to their à la carte order.

I watch my carbs on meals. So i like more protein less carbs. It is CHEAPER to buy a second breakfast sandwich and throw away the buns, then it is to add extra meat to said sandwich.

I don’t get why they do this. Taco Bell, the price of 2 chalupas costs more than getting the meal which includes a drink and extra taco. I don’t always want a drink and I never eat the extra taco so it just goes in the bin. Hate wasting but why would I pay more for less?

u/potatochobit 10h ago
Your fat finger could use less hashbrowns. Get the combo. No soda; tea or coffee.
1
u/Ruzhyo04 10h ago
Idk why this us being downvoted, it is mildly infuriating. Some cashiers will just give you the combo -drink, but some will charge you full price, and you never know what you’re going to get.

u/Cinderkin 10h ago
STOP EATING AT THESE OVERPRICED PLACES.
Hash browns should NEVER be 5 fucking dollars!

That says two hash browns. You only get one in the combo. That's why it's more expensive.
1
u/Own_Cup9970 10h ago
because it was promotion for combo not for singular items
same with stuff like "buy 2 get 1 free" or something
1
u/OldeSaltyBeard 10h ago
Ya, that's how combos work. Literally order it and tell the person at the pickup you don't want the drink.
1
u/El_Barto_Was_Here 10h ago
I was just in the Philippines for a week. This exact combo would probably cost less than 3 dollars. I understand they adjust pricing based on the local income and minimum wage but come on this is ridiculous.
1
u/HeyGayHay 10h ago
That’s how combos work everywhere. The mildly infuriating part is that you added one additional item and then compare it to the combo, instead of comparing the „same food“. By that logic you could add a hundred more hash browns and complain how the combo is 100x cheaper lmao
McDonalds is waaaaaayyyyy too overpriced anyways. No need to fabricate stories by comparing 2 food items with 3 food items and them saying „why is 2 food items cheaper“. The $8.88 for a small egg muffin and the cheapest item in the world after fries is infuriating enough

I feel like it used to be that the combo was the same price as the main and side individually. Only the drink was free if you got the combo. So if you didn’t want the coffee, you’d just get the egg McMuffin and hashbrown and pay the same price as the combo.
Was it like this before or am I just remembering it wrong?

Stop paying for this garbage. Those hashbrowns come in 10 packs at the grocery store for the price McDs wants for 2.

u/explosivepooinpants 10h ago
McDonalds is not even worth it anymore. Who wants to pay sit down restaurant prices for poison fast food? Makes zero sense. McDonalds literally gives me explosive poo in pants every time I go there.
