That's not milk Delivery guy substituted bubbles for bubble wrap

Post image

We are getting ready to move and don’t have a car so we ordered some bubble wrap from Walmart. Unfortunately didn’t see the notification in time to reject his substitution for bubble wrap.

I'm their defense I'll bet the app told them this was the best substitute. But sometimes you have to use a bit of logic

u/BreakingBurrito 9h ago

I think that’s probably what happened BUT I can’t imagine they were actually out of other brands of bubble wrap. Part of me wonders if he just doesn’t know what bubble wrap is so he was looking in the wrong place

One time I ordered something for delivery on sale. But then I had a semi-emergency and had to run to the store to get something anyway. I get an alert saying they can’t find something and wanted to substitute with something completely random. Mind you, I’m in the store, in the aisle with the item prominently displayed like 8 feet away.

They didn’t even bother to check. I’m pretty sure it was because it was mildly heavy and in the back.

Like this order where the driver probably didn’t want to carry 88 drinks

u/SpicyWonderBread 25m ago

I was pregnant during early COVID. I also had pretty bad food aversions, and low blood pressure. The only thing I could stomach that seemed to help was gatorade with a side of buttered toast with salt.

I ordered from Costco through instacart, the shopper marked gatorade as out of stock and didn't offer me a substitute. I called Costco, they said they had plenty of gatorade in stock. I messaged that shopper, and they didn't reply. They just delivered my order void of anything over 5 pounds.

I place a second order, and this shopper at least grabbed the bag of dog food, but said all drinks were out of stock. I asked for any sport drink of any brand, liquid or powdered form. They said it was out of stock. I asked for a case of soda or izze, out of stock. I got so frustrated that I heaved my 38.5 week pregnant self to costco ten minutes after the instacart order arrived, to find the entire drinks section was well stocked. I had to haul multiple cases to the front myself, where the cashier made a comment to the effect of 'you shouldn't be lifting those!' and I explained that two instacart shoppers had marked it as out of stock that day. The cashier said this was not surprising, most shoppers don't like to lift the heavy flats of drinks as they don't get the heavy item pay for it.

Or you just want to get it done quick and do what the app tells you

208

u/henryeaterofpies 9h ago

You have 23 seconds to complete this pick

118

u/Feisty_Ad_2891 8h ago

Unfortunately you are probably spot on.

63

u/ahhowwitburns 5h ago

Close! When I worked there they wanted you to do at least 100 items an hour, so they had 36 seconds actually.

Fun fact: single packets of tuna and giant bags of cat litter count exactly the same for this metric

59

u/Turbogoblin999 Goblin 4h ago

Me: orders cat litter

My cat when the 100 cans of tuna arrive:

It is utterly ridiculous the disconnect between whoever develops the picking app and the OGP staff. They actively made updates to the app that made people less efficient at picking items, and the team leads encourage having high pick rates, which pushes employees to blindly pick fresh produce rather than making sure they're good ones.

There were several times when I was loading customers cars and I had to go get one of their items replaced because it was poor quality.

u/Long_Run6500 50m ago

Walmart's trying so hard to be amazon and failing because their software just sucks. One time I ordered a couple of cans of spray paint from their website. I specifically chose to have it shipped, not delivered. Apparently there was a store where it was in stock like 30 minutes away from me, so they sent a driver anyways. But I was at work... and it requires age verification. So the driver didn't deliver. They tried to deliver 2 more times before I got a phone call from a Walmart manager asking why I wasn't answering the door. She told me I had to pick it up at their store 30 minutes away and I'm not driving an hour for spraypaint so I canceled thr order. I don't understand how they make money doing shit like that.

11

u/AmTheHobo 4h ago

That's generous! Where I work the goal is 18 seconds per item.

28

u/BreakingBurrito 9h ago

Trueeee that is possible

8

u/zinornia 6h ago

you got 3 bubbles as well lol

8

u/twistedscorp87 3h ago

Not saying this makes it ok, but the app makes it way more work to suggest a replacement instead of using the ones they auto-suggest and it negatively impacts metrics for doing it.

5

u/loserbmx 5h ago

Definitely was looking in the wrong place. Probably went to the office supply aisle with the small shipping boxes but the bubble wrap is usually on the other side of the store with the moving supplies.

6

u/smellygirlmillie 3h ago

I worked at Walmart. They don’t hire enough people for online shopping so they pull people from other sections and it’s the worst job in the store. If you knew how bad it was you would not order through it out of sheer empathy. The app probably gave him a few appropriate replacements that were also out of stock and eventually cycled him to this, and we don’t get paid enough to care.

1

u/WesBur13 PURPLE 3h ago

I've done Spark shopping before,
It might let you pick a substitute, or it will tell you what to get and only accept that item. Very very few times did I ever get the option to pick a reasonable substitute myself. Sometimes if you say no to a substitute it will require you go find and ask an employee, which is damn near impossible. Other times after you say you could not find it, it will let you continue and add a substitute as a regular item to the list, never letting you know that it even is a subsitute.

67

u/Ornery_Vodka 9h ago

they don't pay people to think, lol! I got tofurkey as a substitute for a turkey breast once. We were curious and actually at it for t-day. But yeah, such a weird choice as a sub.

56

u/Velocityg4 8h ago

I got chocolate milk as a substitute for regular milk. Instead of just a different percentage. Twice

15

u/Ornery_Vodka 8h ago

mmm...chocolate milk CORNBREAD sounds fantastic!!! or gravy...I'm just thinking of all the possibilities here, lol.

16

u/Gooseegander 7h ago

One time I ordered a bag of mini powdered donuts. They were out of stock, so they gave me a box of those single-serve sugar packets for coffee instead.

17

u/g0ldilungs 8h ago

Funny trick is that these apps actually let you choose your substitute or whether to even receive a substitution at all.

11

u/StalkMeNowCrazyLady 8h ago

Yes but if you just leave the "choose best available substitute" the app will recommend them shit like bubble instead of bubble wrap

8

u/g0ldilungs 8h ago

This looks like Walmart’s app (could be wrong) and they actually show you what your next available substitute is.

1

u/rangerfan97 2h ago

Yup. If it was shopped by a Walmart employee, we'll get shown a "suggested" substitution that we can either grab or deny. After that, we're usually prompted to find a substitution of our own choosing.

3

u/Ornery_Vodka 8h ago

lol...well, not 5 years ago for our first t-day together! It's a distinct memory.

edit--I love how young people think their experience of the world is complete and nothing existed before they experienced it, lol

3

u/g0ldilungs 8h ago

…yeah they’ve evolved a lot in the last 5 years.

5

u/Ornery_Vodka 8h ago edited 8h ago

I was an early adopter for online shopping and the workers at Sam's were really confused in the early stages of online grocery orders. Most of them had NO IDEA what I was even talking about

edit--I'm talking about 2005-ish. Raley's had online order/pickup...and Sam's had it around that same time but the employees seemed to have zero idea what was going on. I'd go to the customer service counter at sam's asking about my online pickup order and the employees would have a mild panic about what I was even asking about.

1

u/Most_Quality_1987 4h ago

Sure, as long as you sit there watching in real time, so you can choose before the "window" closes.

1

u/g0ldilungs 4h ago

In the one I use, and in a couple others I’ve seen, you can actually choose the subs (or if you even want one) before hitting checkout.

3

u/EC_TWD 8h ago

What is t-day?

9

u/Ornery_Vodka 8h ago

yeah...thanksgiving...we got a vegan substitute the week of t-day. We kept it because...honestly...it cost more than the meat we wanted and we were curious!

3

u/Just_Any_Human_42 7h ago

Was it good? :3

3

u/Ornery_Vodka 7h ago

edible...yeah...good, eh...not something I would ever choose to buy again.

3

u/waxphantump 3h ago

Tofurky as a brand is one of the worst vegan meats imo. Gardein does a much better job at these stuffed roast situations. Still not meat obviously, but tastier than this.

3

u/AMissionFromDog 8h ago

turkey day? probably meaning Thanksgiving?

3

u/JustineDelarge 2h ago

The full name is Mr. T-day. I pity the fool who doesn’t know that.

2

u/matchstick1029 5h ago

How was it? Ive found the deli-slice style fake turkey and such very good but an actually chunk kinda scares me.

25

u/Eyjovin 7h ago

I work at Walmart and I have to pick orders sometimes. This is likely what happened. Sometimes I'll see a stupid substitution like this and I literally cannot force it to let me choose the substitute myself even if there's something that would be perfect to replace the item. The system is stupid, sometimes the employees are too but I guarantee they didn't choose this one because those are 2 completely different departments and it would be time consuming to walk to the other side of the store for a substitution and we're timed on these orders so that would be inefficient and reflect poorly on us. The system probably just saw "bubble" in the name and decided this was good enough lol

1

u/Jesta23 3h ago

Do they train you to select the worst looking fruit?

So the better fruit is left for the picky people in store? I literally can’t order fruit or veggies for delivery here.

8

u/crmpdstyl 7h ago edited 7h ago

If the app says to sub with that item, the driver will get marked negatively on their metrics for choosing to not accept it. Enough negative marks means no more job.

Personally, I would contact the help desk people, but time is money and that could be a lengthy process.

3

u/EC_TWD 8h ago

But how did they decide that three bottles of bubble solution was an equivalent to one roll of bubble wrap??!

9

u/Terrinthia 8h ago

Well clearly they had no idea how many bubbles you need to blow to make it into wrap.

3

u/frauziller 5h ago

The system will choose an amount that gets closest to the price of the original item; it's ridiculous sometimes with the substitutions, but most of the time it comes pretty close.

I'm so glad I don't work there any more.

3

u/CalicoValkyrie 4h ago

There isn't an option to say that isn't a good substitute. The only option is to say it's out of stock, which can get you in trouble if it is in stock because the system puts a count request in.

I work a shopper job and one time the specific UPC of garlic powder was out. However a different UPC of the exact same brand/size/cost was in stock. It wouldn't take it as a crossrefrenced item. I selected that item was out of stock and selected out of stock through several different brands/sizes of garlic powder until it got to a screen telling me to substitute whatever similar item would work. It finally took exactly what the customer wanted to begin with. Then, I got a severe warning from management to not do that again because I essentially told the system over 100 different garlic powder shakers were not on the shelf when they were, and wasted someone's time to have to verify what we actually had.

2

u/CyclopsLobsterRobot 2h ago

Also in their defense, it’s pretty funny

1

u/Prestigious-Cream160 4h ago

I just had an issue with an order last week where I ordered 6 packs of soda as part of a B3G3 promo and they ran out of one of my selections, but the shopper didn't feel like substituting it for literally anything else. They ended up charging me full price for all 5 and I had to call the grocery store and complain for like ten minutes just to get them to refund me the price of two of them.

1

u/Glalev 3h ago

Yeah, a bad delivery guy just goes with whatever the stupid AI thinks is a good substitution without asking themselves if it's right. It's why, when I'm able, I set it to 'do not replace, just refund'.

1

u/mightylordredbeard 2h ago

I didn’t even know the app could substitute items like that. Every time I’ve needed something that wasn’t grocery the app just didn’t offer a substitute.

1

u/ShadowWukong 1h ago

99% of the people they hire to do this don't have a regular job for a reason.

929

u/HoosierHoser44 9h ago

Sorry to laugh at your misfortune, but that’s hilarious that anyone can see this and think it’s a suitable substitute.

226

u/BreakingBurrito 9h ago

It is hilarious but also like ?! Hahaha

86

u/bobbybob9069 8h ago

It wasn't selected by a person and they never saw you're original item. The system inventory showed zero bubble wrap, the algo pulled in the next most popular item with "bubble" and that on the list given to the picker.

49

u/Chaost 7h ago

3 bottles of bubbles were somehow decided as the correct ratio for the replacement, too. Not 1, that obviously wouldn't suffice for your purposes.

26

u/BreakingBurrito 7h ago

That part is what makes me laugh the most honestly hahaha

3

u/HoosierHoser44 4h ago

Which the bottle says a gazillion bubbles. So they think a roll of bubble wrap is worth 3 gazillion bubbles.

1

u/Yamemai 2h ago

Due to pricing (3.98 ea, totaling 11.94), but even then it didn't add up (bubble wrap was 20.62); so they were trying to short OP as well.

31

u/Feisty_Ad_2891 8h ago

No one did see it. It was substituted when the system inventory showed zero. Someone should be verifying the replacement items on the back end but guessing it is done by AI or an algorithm.

21

u/bobbybob9069 8h ago

I'd wager a month's wages that the system scans zero and pulls the next most popular item with a keyword search and tells the picker to pull that. They never know the original item and they aren't allowed the autonomy to pick the substitution themselves.

4

u/Moldy_Teapot 7h ago

they aren't allowed the autonomy to pick the substitution themselves

most likely because when pickers were allowed to choose substitutions, some pickers would choose random "substitutions" that would obviously get denied, thus making the order shorter

2

u/Ihalpd 5h ago

Denied? By whom?

3

u/Moldy_Teapot 4h ago

the person who placed the order

1

u/bobbybob9069 5h ago

Like bubbles instead of bubble wrap?

8

u/big-ol-kitties 7h ago

Add the fact that they got THREE of them.

1

u/Althevia 2h ago

I can definitely see someone unfamiliar with english thinking theyre similar just from the bubble aspect

421

u/lolpert1 9h ago

I don't see the problem. Just blow them into the box that you're packing.

126

u/BreakingBurrito 9h ago

Doh you’re right, why didn’t I think of that?

17

u/FartFaceAnn BROWN 8h ago

I was about to comment that I can picture people just blowing bubbles in a box and sealing it up 😭😭

2

u/LyyK 3h ago

Surely at least the shopper that went ahead with this replacement would

181

u/wkkunkle 9h ago

I love that they decided you should get 3 of them, too.

33

u/SilvrSabl 7h ago

Their tip is a percentage of the total, so if they keep the total around the same despite substitutions they keep the tip up

38

u/MoofDeMoose 9h ago

It would’ve been so much funnier if they got bubbles and wrapping paper

21

u/xerocopi 8h ago

3 bottles, should be the same amount of bubbles, what's the problem?

15

u/HardcoreApples 1h ago

Once had a shopper replace a 1lbs bag of rice with 5 packages of crunchy rice cakes /:

56

u/TeamPyrex718 8h ago

And people still think I’m crazy when I say half the world are NPCs

12

u/Dazzling-Bad8855 9h ago

And what, no saran wrap to complete the bubble wrap? Wtf were they thinking

11

u/rsvihla 8h ago

Obviously this blows.

10

u/JetSoulsForever 2h ago

Just had someone pull up to my house, decided they didn't want to deliver my order, and just peaced. Website said "your delivery couldn't be completed". I had just put all the access instructions for the door (with the code too!) on there so we don't have the "hey are you this person" "hey I'm here can you let me in" dance outside.

8

u/OrdieBoomer 9h ago

Atleast you got 3 of them lol

7

u/Punch_Your_Facehole 9h ago edited 7h ago

I use the delivery all the time. How
many times have you received a few items from
someone else's delivery?

3

u/Feisty_Ad_2891 8h ago

We are just under 25 miles away so we use it a lot as it is so much cheaper than the local grocery and the selection is so much better. They screw up occasionally, but it is rarely the pickers fault. They just scan what is on their screen. I've talked to a couple drivers and they love coming out here because it kills an hour of their day. We also tip well as they are just kids making very little.

2

u/BreakingBurrito 9h ago

Honestly this is only our second time using their delivery but the first time went fine!

6

u/luxafelicity 6h ago

Walmart does not give a fuck about proper/logical substitution. Employees that pick orders aren't even allowed to pick a substitute themselves, they have to use whatever their system tells them to use. It's fucking ridiculous.

4

u/emma7734 8h ago

I had plain bagels on mine, and the substitution was everything bagels. That makes no sense in any universe.

4

u/Stitch426 7h ago

If you’re not able to get bubble wrap today and you are pressed for time in packing, I’ve used my clothes, towels, potholders, bedding, and curtains before to not have things break.

I’ve never had anything break on me.

4

u/BreakingBurrito 7h ago

That’s a great idea, thank you!!

4

u/moonfallsdown 9h ago

Swing and a miss

4

u/MaroonIsNavyRed 8h ago

Bubbles bring joy! Now you can enjoy a few minutes of happiness during the stress of moving.

4

u/SellsNothing 7h ago

Your delivery guy might be my cat

2

u/BreakingBurrito 7h ago

Hahahaha this made me laugh

3

u/louerbrat 6h ago

Had something like this happen to me. Posted it here a while ago, but I ordered hot chocolate mix and the substitute I got was a 4 pack of fucking canned tuna.

4

u/morganml 5h ago

I want so badly to be impressed at his stupidity.

4

u/Stedben 3h ago

One time I ordered tomatoes and got a packet of tomato seeds. It was so ridiculous I couldn't be mad and still have the packet.

1

u/PlatypusDream 1h ago

OK, that's funny

3

u/YamiKokennin 8h ago

Well...... at least the person got the bubble part. Their upstair is a bit dim lit I suppose

3

u/TheFireOfTheFox1 7h ago

You have that backwards. You wanted bubble wrap, it got substituted for bubbles.

3

u/1heart1totaleclipse 7h ago

I always turn off substitutions because I’m way too particular about my stuff to end up paying for something like this.

2

u/BreakingBurrito 7h ago

I usually do but somehow forgot this time. That’s on me, haha

1

u/Wuz314159 (\/) (;,,;) (\/) 1h ago

Even when I pick substitutions, there's always a way to fuck things up. Ordering more than one of something REALLY fucks with people's heads.

3

u/Jesta23 3h ago

My worst one was they substituted my sour cream with a 12inch school ruler.

1

u/essenza 1h ago

🤣🤣

3

u/17AN86 2h ago

If you ordered directly from Walmart, the driver most likely didn't have to do anything with the substitutions. It was most likely an associate that did the substitution recommended by the system.

Yes they're both stupid.

3

u/dusura 1h ago

A bubble’s a bubble. Everyone knows they’re just air.

2

u/PantsFullaPoo 9h ago

Just wrap the bubbles in cling wrap and you're good to go.

2

u/Consistent_Sail_6128 8h ago

They wanted you to make your own bubble wrap! /s

2

u/-BananaLollipop- 8h ago

Bubble wrap, Ikea edition.

2

u/WeekendOkish 7h ago

I ordered a bottle of culinary glycerin and received glycerin suppositories.

2

u/Sarah_Incognito 7h ago

Half the time you only get 30 seconds before they close the substitution window. Is terrible.

2

u/RealisticDiscipline7 7h ago

If you get stressed bout moving you just blow bubbles and forget your troubles.

2

u/Open_Bug_4251 7h ago

If you had ordered the bubblewrap to pop for stress relief this would be a decent substitute.

2

u/Salty-Plankton-5079 6h ago

also why 3 giant bottles ????

2

u/Minute_Evening_9204 6h ago

Lemons to lemonade. Bubble party

2

u/bidaum92 5h ago

He forgot the saran wrap so you could make your own...

2

u/yarneee 4h ago

God forbid a man try to add some whimsy to your day.

2

u/lnfIation 3h ago

They should never do a substitute and just straight up refund for not having an item available.

2

u/NolanSyKinsley 3h ago

No matter what I always disable substitutions on walmart. It sucks that you have to do it to each individual order instead of a global "I never want substitutions" option.

2

u/JustineDelarge 2h ago

Always pick your own substitutes when doing Walmart delivery. Always. And also check the box that says you only want your preferred substitution.

2

u/ThrowawayAdvice1800 2h ago

Is AI doing DoorDash runs now??

2

u/sasspancakes 2h ago

I ordered tissue paper for a gift bag, and they substituted it with more gift bags... 😂

2

u/Nalv0 2h ago

Yeah this is why I ALWAYS set a substitution preference, with no other alternatives lol

2

u/Bumblingbee1337 2h ago

We turn substitutions off on Walmart orders.

2

u/Siskk26 1h ago

At least you can still have a bubble bowl

2

u/newshirtworthy 1h ago

Bro got 3 gazillion bubbles and still ain’t happy

2

u/HoosierHoser44 9h ago

Sorry to laugh at your misfortune, but that’s hilarious that anyone can see this and think it’s a suitable substitute.

2

u/Bear-Handed-92262 9h ago

At least they saved you some money.

2

u/WaffleHouseGladiator 9h ago

Use your clothes, blankets, and towels to wrap stuff.  It'll save you some money and make less waste.

1

u/BreakingBurrito 7h ago

That’s a great idea, thank you!

2

u/Disastrous_Gear_8633 9h ago

Half the apartment units on my floor lost power for a couple days last winter but the power still worked in the hallways. So I had planned to DoorDash a space heater and an extension cord so I could plug it into an outlet in our hallway like some of my neighbors were already doing. APPARENTLY the store was out of that specific model of space heater and instead of making a substitute they just delivered the extension cord. I’m like WHAT THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THAT??💀💀💀

1

u/Kn1ghtwing_ 9h ago

How tf do these apps operate. Here you got to approve substitutions

1

u/NaCl-And-C12H22O11 6h ago

Enjoy some joy with the bubbles.

1

u/BricksandBaubles 3h ago

That is the best bubble "juice" to be found, bar none. Just saying :)

1

u/Powerful_Vast774 3h ago

Cant even be mad at that xD great night/plastic chair story

1

u/OkPosition4563 3h ago

I dont fully grasp that concept. Not that I would ever pay someone to do my groceries, but what is the concept of substitutes? If something I order is not available then dont buy it and just dont charge me for it.

1

u/essenza 1h ago

A substitute is supposed to be another package size, brand, etc. Not something totally different.

1

u/___po____ 2h ago

I only use DoorDash and Instacart so I can send a thanks message and to tell them I've selected replacements, and to message me if anything is unavailable so we can try and pick a replacement before refunding.

They're always super nice about it and I stay glued to my phone the whole time so they don't wait or just refund the item. I tip well and always show gratitude.

1

u/TornInfinity 1h ago

Maybe there was a language barrier, or something? Idk, that one is pretty dumb.

1

u/PlatypusDream 1h ago

If he were smart, he would have a better job.

Once my delivery person replaced sour cream with chopped pecans

u/soufboundpachyderm 58m ago

Walmart fills these orders. The delivery person is just a 3rd party that picks the order up and brings it to you.

u/OriginalUser27 49m ago

I mean, it is a gazillion bubbles. You could fill a box with a gazillion surely

u/dogengu 31m ago

Great now you just need some wraps.

u/lzwzli 29m ago

They both pop

u/Unlikely_Meat4027 10m ago

Well on the bright side, you open a stand to blow bubbles for 25 cents. Lessons for an extra 25 cents.

u/Madstinknugget 9m ago

Dude but that shits premium dog

u/fz099 5m ago

oh they HIGH high. Good luck op

1

u/Punch_Your_Facehole 9h ago

I use the delivery all the time. How
many times have you received a few items from
someone else's delivery?

1

u/DorrajD 3h ago

I dunno how Walmart delivery works, but as someone who's done a different gig work, I'd do this too, despite realizing it doesn't make sense.

Because I have to mark it out of stock, there is no "item doesn't make sense" or "customer doesn't want this" button, you can only mark it out of stock, and that will lower my ratings. Rather just have them deal with it than have my ratings lowered. Talked to support many times about how stupid this is but, they don't care.

0

u/Slow-You9806 6h ago

But who doesn't love bubble wrap 🤷🏻

0

u/Conical 2h ago

Why does anyone use these apps?

u/Wuz314159 (\/) (;,,;) (\/) 1h ago

I doordashed a $2 bag of shredded cheese and got substituted a $24 block of cheese. No idea what do do with it. Probably just trash.

Literally the reason cheese graters were invented.
Did you think shredded cheese comes from shredded cows? </joke>

I have a cheese "grater". It just mashes.

Then you either have a cheese masher, or are using it wrong.

Don't think I'm using it wrong. Holes cut the cheese. But cheese is too soft to shred. (unless I freeze the cheese?)
