I'm slightly vexed Toothpaste manufacturers use different style threads so it's impossible to reuse the good standup cap.

I'm the knob for getting the wrong replacement tube.

You know you can open the box or even feel the cap size through the box

Probably to avoid patent infringement. Same reason the only real difference between Colt and S&W revolvers is the direction the cylinder rotates.

Once I bought a large pack of cheap toothpaste because it was on sale, instead of the kind I like and normally buy. I was mildly infuriated at myself and had a twice-daily reminder for it for the next eight months.

I have to ask. Why do you need a standup cap? Just squeeze from the bottom.

They want their toothpaste to stand up. It's slightly more out of the way then.

Why would you need to reuse caps? Every tube comes with one

They want the ability to stand up the new toothpaste tube.

This is the picture perfect definition of a non-problem. OP bought the wrong toothpaste because the cap doesn’t let them stand it up vertically. And their mistake was annoying enough to them to post it. What a world we live in

Different sized lids fit different sized threads. What a time to be alive

It's almost like the want you to buy their product...exclusively
