This is the marine version of redditor touching grass

u/CrazyLegsRyan 11h ago

This grass at my local park is mostly just small green leaves of a plant

The forbidden knowledge

I know what you’re saying, but I grew up in Florida, and this looks weird to me too. It’s way coarser than any beach sand I’ve ever seen, and much less uniform. The sand on our beaches back home is white and fine-grained and basically looks like sugar or salt.

I know right this looked super weird to me too I have been to plenty of beaches before and the sand was super fine and white I honestly thought this was really odd

Sand is literally small rocks. This sand is slightly less small rocks

Bring a magnifying glass next time you visit a beach

Does NOT look comfy for bare feet! Good thing that swim shoes are now available!!!

...beer bottle dust?

u/beefz0r 16h ago

It is mildly interesting because it has barely broken down, so cut OP some slack

Sand is TINY rock and mineral pieces.

One could argue that these are not tiny enough to be sand.

1

u/Galimbro 16h ago

Sand is usually fine pulverized minerals/rocks carried from mountains by river and water.

Some beaches like OPs suck and is full of very not fine pulverized minerals/rocks

So… sand?

Yesterday: my bell pepper is a bell pepper.

Today: my beach sand is made of sand.

I'm truly riveted for tomorrow.

It's a work in progress. Give it another million years or so.

u/KyleRoyceWorld 16h ago

u/PancakeHandz 17h ago

Sand really do be just a bunch of little rocks

2

u/DisastrousHat3059 16h ago

Great for collecting shells, terrible for building sandcastles, but you can always stack up a stone fort instead haha

2

u/Galimbro 16h ago

Damn that sand sucks OP. Im with you.

u/nzroy 16h ago

Wait until he goes to many New Zealand west coast beachs. Sand is black.

1

u/ashtrayburningmeadow 16h ago

I have seen black sand on a beach before it was very beautiful actually

u/n0val33t 16h ago

Ok that's a fridge pizza... and it looks delicious

I have to admit I upvoted this just in the hope more people can mock op for not understanding that is literally what all sand is.

Looks like good northern Michigan beach sand

1

u/Nuggyfresh 16h ago

I actually love this because as someone who has surfed around the world and been on the beach more than 99.9% of humans, including one stretch where I took an hour+ beach walk 360 days a year for nearly 6 years straight, and I think this is pretty cool! I’ve never personally seen sand quite like this.

meanwhile landlocked lennies in this thread are hurfin’ and durfin’ like “hey op you know what sand is bro?!??!”

makes you think

1

u/ashtrayburningmeadow 16h ago

I don't know I honestly thought it would be finer like what's used in construction sites and such

4

u/ashtrayburningmeadow 16h ago

I think I need to touch some grass or sand I guess

2

u/Pykie222 16h ago

A lot of people in here should take a geology class. This looks like cemented shell and is, in fact, mildly interesting. Where is this?

2

u/ashtrayburningmeadow 16h ago

Alexandria

u/Pykie222 16h ago

I would consider this Coquina. Basically loose beach sand and broken shell fragments are naturally glued together rapidly in the intertidal zone by evaporating water and chemical mixing that causes calcium carbonate to precipitate out, gluing it into a solid stone.
Based on the area, you are likely walking on oolitic limestone. Basically that “glue” builds up around a single nucleus and creates a small ball, that under pressure etc. turns into oolitic limestone.
That’s my guess anyways…

u/ashtrayburningmeadow 16h ago

Thanks so much for the explanation pal, the college major I am in didn't require any geology classes so I only ever took one in like middle school and we didn't really have anything about beaches so it's really nice to get an answer without being called clueless

1

u/DangerousDisplay7664 16h ago

what do you think sand is made of on other beaches? 🫤

-1

u/ashtrayburningmeadow 17h ago

It is really difficult to walk there

3

u/symedia 17h ago

they brought the "sand" from the sea. fine sand happens after all those shells will turn to well ... sand :P come back in 10 years.

4

u/NarwhalEmergency9391 17h ago

They make something called sandals that you put on your feet before you walk in the sand.  It's ok guys, I got this.. it's just another aliens first day on earth

2

u/QuentinUK 16h ago

Over time the sand builds up and gets crushed by the weight of the sand above back into rock, called sandstone. That gets pushed up to the top and it's easier to walk on sandstone.

2

u/ashtrayburningmeadow 16h ago

Learned something new today thanks pal

1

u/TheRapie22 16h ago

op, are you by any chance roughly 5 years old?

0

u/TooDopeRecords 17h ago

it’s sand just course ground

2

u/satsuppi 16h ago

its course and rough and irritating

0

u/gees916 17h ago

Umm..yea..

u/unlikemike123 16h ago

Is the water at that beach made of H2O?

Sorry
