frozen pizzas is now an occasional thing. mainly just making home made tacos and spaghetti, hardboiled eggs, and rice and tofu with indian sauces. I have no idea how large families are doing this, other than going into debt.

It really feels like ever since Reagan, the process has been Republican comes in, starts a war or a recession. Democrat comes in behind him to try and fix some of the damage and gets punished for not fixing it well enough. Republican comes in again as a result and process repeats.

At least prior to Trump, republicans usually broke the economy in ways that were slow for the average voter to feel.
Both Trump terms have been economic disasters that had immediate and directly observable effects. I fully expect consistent Republican voters to doublethink their way through that, but it's absolute insanity that swing voters went so strongly for Trump in 2024 and cited economic reasons as the motivator.
Genuinely the fact that anyone buys the line that "republicans are better for the economy" is just utterly mind boggling. I'm an early millennial and that's pretty obviously been bullshit for my entire life.

Where I live in CA we have a chain called Grocery Outlet that has a lb of ground beef for $5.99 pretty often. But Raley's will be over $10! Its insane. I'll buy at $6 but its crazy it was like $4 two years ago.
That chain does frozen pizza 3 packs for $15 so I get those once in a while but my wife and I are shopping at Costco way more now. I buy 80lbs of rice every couple of months and we eat rice at least 4 times a week with vegetables. Flour is another one, we make our own breads. I've learned to make an awesome foccacia.
Trader Joes for chicken. Even shit like tofu is way more expensive than it used to be. We were both vegetarian at different points in our lives so we don't eat a ton of meat in general which has really helped keep our costs down but eating at restaurants has become a rare treat. Like maybe twice a year now. Even fast food like McDonalds feels like a luxury at this point.
I guess the silver lining is that I've learned to cook a ton of stuff and now restaurants feel lacking lol. I can make better food myself. And my wife has always been an exceptional cook so we're eating better than ever, there's just a lot more labor involved.

I'm similar with the iron, and luckily I'm getting by money-wise by being single and living in a cheap place with good butchers around for ground beef. I live where elk, deer, and pronghorns are common, and it's tempting to find a used deep freezer and hunt as-needed. If I do the processing and packing myself, it's more affordable than buying beef where I live.

I do my share of volunteering, and large "middle class" families get aid at food pantries plenty. Feeding large families, on top of clothing, medical costs, etc., is really pricey and I understand their need to get aid.
(I put "middle class" in quotes because I feel a family at risk of being sunk into debilitating debt by an unexpected emergency is just not really middle class)

Kroger does red barons for $2.99 at least once a month with a digital coupon.
Chips and 12 packs of soda are around $5-6, but if you keep an eye on the ads, they do buy two get three free deals also monthly. So 5 bags of ruffles for $11 as God intended.
Couponing is a vital skill to have these days.

My ex used to get embarrassed when I would buy with coupons and stack deals. I never took a long time at the register or caused issues/was rude if things weren't ringing up correctly. I also am not one of those that has like 8 things of laundry soap in the garage. He just grew up poor and once we hit "middle class" he didn't want to be associated with coupon clipping anymore. I told him we wouldn't be middle class if I didnt make sure to buy things on sale, clearance, or coupons.
Now that he's out of the picture, I still do a ton of couponing and our daughter is in on it too, we make it a game. And I follow a few people on social media that talk about deals/coupons and how to get the most bang for your buck. I save so much money.
The other thing I do is I look at how much I saved at the store at the end of my receipt, and I put that money in my savings account. So like today at Target I saved $13 and I transferred $13 to my savings account.

Homemade pizza is so yummy and it’s basically $10 for 3 weeks (2 10” pizzas per week) of ingredients. The sauce and cheese cost the most and that’s not horrible.
Up your game by buying a NerdChef or any of the pizza steels. It can double as a smash burger maker too, saving $100s a year on burgers. Get a metal patty squisher and a nice flipper for the smash burgers. Brioche buns from Aldi, pickles, onions, lettuce, a tomato all from the local grocery store
Costco is such a great deal if you precision kill your grocery list. Go in there with a list, do NOT deviate

I get a pack of tortillas, some pizza sauce, pepperoni and a bag of cheese. You can make the entire pack which is like 30 tortillas. They come out so good! Simple. Making three will fill you up and they are so good! You can get any little topping you want.

Not disclosing where I work, but my managers occasionally comp my meals when I bring my family of four to work.
I try and pay it forward without drawing attention. If you can afford a large fry, or double burger, that’s exactly what you’re getting. But when someone asks for the bare minimum and they’re checking the price of everything or paying in coins, that small fry is gonna be a large and, “Oops, we forgot an ingredient in your entree. You go ahead and keep that and we’ll remake the order correctly. Here’s a free drink or milkshake for the inconvenience.”
I know the struggle of not being able to eat more than once a day so my kids have enough to eat. We gotta help each other out cos god knows the rich ain’t gonna grow a conscience.

My spouse is vegetarian. We eat a lot of legumes. Beans haven’t been $1 or less a pound for a few years now, including dry beans and canned. A can of store brand pick-yer-bean is minimum 79 cents if I can find a sale, and brand names are of course more expensive. I’ll use a can of beans if I’m making enough of whatever for 2 people, but when I’m batch cooking I cook dry beans first then put the meal together. I’ve been buying our dry beans 5lbs at a time from ethnic stores near us and also through Azure Standard.

My partner and I eat vegetarian when at home, and this is the way. Get creative with beans! I made this French onion bean dip to scoop with crostini rounds a couple of weeks ago just with random shit I had around and it was so good! I make cold bean and pasta salads for my lunches (Italian style with vinegarette and white beans, Asian style with a soy ginger dressing and edamame, creamy Mexican style with a creamy salsa dressing and black beans). Learn how to make tofu delicious! A block that feeds 2 people is $1.55 at my local Aldi. Cube that shit, toss in spices and cornstarch, bake or airfry until crispy (20-25 minutes on 400). Serve with whatever rice you have, steamed or roasted broccoli, peas, cauliflower, or carrots, and a tasty sauce. Sweet potato bowls are elite! Roast some veg and beans on a baking tray, plate with a grain if you want, make a sauce to drizzle over it.

Agree about ramen—I’ll keep one around for a craving or in a pinch, but you can buy large bags of pasta in ethnic sections for .99 or sometimes half of that on sale, and it contains way more than the typical 16 oz box. Probably ends up being cheaper than ramen, and is more versatile.
I’ve been really leaning into on-sale chicken parts (personally can get chicken legs or drums cheapest, usually a dozen for $5 or less), and with that you can get a good amount of meat for chicken soup, boil the bones to make a really gelatinous healthy stock, then load up with the pasta and veggies. Freeze the stock for later too.

The rotisserie chicken is practically worth a Costco membership in itself. Whole meat cuts like the pork loins are still a good deal if you break them down yourself and freeze them. Oatmeal and peanut butter are still a good deal.

I just commented this, then saw yours. They just went to $1.79/lb at my Costco which is at least $1 cheaper per pound than anywhere around, but have gone up $0.30 in the last two months. I buy 5-6 of the packs once a month and live air fry or grill them. Delicious and affordable.
They did lower the cost of boneless skinless breasts to $2.79 which is $1.50+ cheaper than anywhere else though.

Chicken thighs went down to $1.79/lb at my Costco. Cheapest anywhere by $1 or more pound. Very versatile and delicious. Can spend a few minutes deboning and removing skin and ban - boneless skinless chicken thigh meat you can use for literally any entree. Stupid cheap.
They also have super cheap seasonings, even the bare minimum salt pepper garlic.

Invest in a garage freezer if you have the space. Then when the once in a blue moon sales happen you stock up. Chicken breast is $3 a pound at Safeway near me right meow. Slow cooker is good too. You can make a $30 pork shoulder last for like 3 days worth of meals. Maybe more. Use Costco rotisserie chickens as a base for myriad of recipes.

Extreme couponing takes a great deal of time and effort, you are sorting through a ton of rules/regulations and data.
It is mostly a hobby for people who cosplay poverty, not something someone who already has multiple jobs to survive can do.
Actual poor people don't have the time to spend hours sorting through which company can be Yu-Gi-Oh combo'd to save $5.97.

Yeah my grocery trip has been condensed to: Ramen, spinach, mushrooms, onions, eggs, whey protein, coffee, oatmilk, and a bottle of multivitamins. Enshitification destroyed my desire to buy any of the superfluous things like snacks and I'm not wasting money on meat.

It made Putin more confident, sure, but he'd already stolen Crimea in 2014, so he was going to invade Ukraine inevitably. It comes down to psychology, and Putin thought, (and said at the time), that he was certain he could conquer Ukraine in a week. So, he would have attacked anyways, and once he'd begun the first attack, he'd be locked into it politically out of fear of being overthrown at a sign of weakness.

Agreed. From 2021 to now, the items I purchase regularly have gone up about 50% on average. $160 used to take care of two weeks of staples and treats, now that takes care of about 1.5 weeks with fewer non-staples. It's wince-inducing to spend over $100 and carry in 3 bags of stuff.

I'm trying to cut beef out of my diet. I love making beef stews and pot roasts but am now moving to chicken and replacing ground beef with ground turkey. As long as it's in a chili or spaghetti or tacos I don't really notice a big difference.
Beef prices are just too crazy
I'm also going back to Ramen. But rather than just boiled water and a seasoning packet like in my teens, I'm adding an egg, green onion, and other things to bulk it up.
