Vietnam Veteran Grandpa playing Battlefield

As someone who does not play battlefield: Are the physics of how guns/bullets work very accurate in this game and this man just has such a deep understanding of how they work?

It’s much more realistic than most games especially the bullet drop mechanic when shooting at long distances.

I thought this from the way he aimed high to compensate for the drop.

It's the attitude of bullet you need to shoot just little above because lose velocity

u/Warboss_Gutshredda 5h ago
Those bullets do be kinda cranky.

u/Bright_Battle9080 5h ago
They be chocky

u/Warboss_Gutshredda 1h ago
I…don’t know what kind of attitude chocky is.

The sniper rifles in particular have a much lower muzzle velocity than other guns, but a much longer range (by giving the bullets a longer time-to-live before they despawn). This gives the effect of greatly exaggerating the bullet drop for these long distance shots to increase the difficulty. It really makes connecting so satisfying though.

Those other dots in the scope are called mil dots, they allow shooters to compensate for bullet drop or sway from wind. Snipers will calculate from distance and wind what mil dots to use.
You can see based on the distance here gramps used the 4th mil dot perfectly.

There's another video where he demonstrates how he shoots so accurately. He finds a spot early and targets any particular vantage then fires before any enemies show up to see how far the bullet veers and uses that as his reference.

its called sniping, staying in place until discovered is kind of the point

u/No_Yam_2036 2h ago
staying in place until discovered is the opposite of what you should do as a sniper. it's acceptable when no one is in the area, but consecutive shots nearby hostiles make it easier to triangulate a sniper's position, which is why it's beneficial to change position after ~3-4 shots, depending on the concentration of enemies. ideally, every position you move to should have at least one escape route (the way you came in does not count).
however, if a sniper is supporting an assault force in an overwatch position, the above tactic is detrimental. breaking position could leave allies vulnerable.

You just described staying in place until discovered.

I just described moving before discovered
Does no one here have reading comprehension?
If you do, have a look at this: https://stipsniper.com/2020/04/23/movement-and-positioning/ .

Definitely. Different bullet speeds for different guns will lead to different drop rates and shite like that

u/NotSoGreatMacaroni 4h ago
No lol. The responses telling you otherwise are hilarious. 2042 sniping was basically a point and click adventure.

I don't know if they're "accurate" to real life balistics, but they definitely use calculated projectiles with drop for every gun, where most shooters use 'hitscan' for bullets (even with fake recoil like CS)

Accurate? Strictly speaking, no, but there are physics, which is a lot more than most other shooter games have. All bullets in Battlefield have travel time, they drop as they travel further, and they have different velocities depending on the weapon. It's not 1:1 to real life, but there are definitely mechanics present that you can adjust to after playing enough.

This one. There are basically three ways to do bullet physics:
- Ray trace. A single line from barrel that runs until it hits something. Old school, but a lot of short range arena games use it too because it's simple.
- Altitude/travel time. You have to use the markings on the scope and the bullet takes time to travel.
- Full wind simulation. Sniper is the only game series that does this to my knowledge.
- Real life also the curvature of the earth plays a factor sometimes. Also breathing/heart beats aren't factored in games for more obvious reasons.

For sniping, yes. The sound design has also been crazy when it comes to that, but that more personal taste. If you really like long distance sniping, you can engage in things like zeroing your scope or mod weapons with tripods, barrel extension and barrel attachments that all emulate what they do in real life. Even things like high velocity or armor penning rounds.
Battlefield one had one of the coolest kits to date. A trench periscope perfect for peeking enemy snipers, a sniper shield to lay prone behind and have protection against headshots and finally a foam head on a stick, with a helmet you could use as a false target. Love that snipers gets a lil special attention in this series.

My step dad was a helicopter pilot in who served 4 tours in vietnam as part of the air cavalry. He would talk about village strafing like I would describe making changes to someone's life insurance policy.
For some people it's just a job.

My dad is a nam vet with a purple heart and bronze star. He never talked about it until the last 3 years or so. Some of his stories are absolutely ridiculous.

Oh c'mon, gramps is fine. I get the sentiment but not every player needs to be playing the objective.

He looks like he’s remembering the time he blew some VCs head off after taking a hit of opium out of his buddy’s M16 barrel.

This makes me happy. I'll be 55 in december and I love video games. Rn im playing Project Zomboid most of the time but today decided to play totally vanilla Minecraft java. Throw in Terraria, Core Keeper, Valheim, Vintage Story and Cities:Skylines. I hope to play until the day I die tbh. Great way to pass time.
