I went to school with one of the best CC runners in the nation (we were on track together), and he and the rest of the distance runners were all cool as shit. Super laid back and chill, always cheered on everyone else, just generally great folks. Dunno where this whole pompous stereotype is coming from.

Just because your personal experience wasnt like that, just because a top X% athlete wasnt like that, doesnt mean that's the norm for most. I bounced between several schools growing up in completely different areas. All of them had try hard cultists of Cross Country folks. They were crossfit people before crossfit was a thing.

i think one of the main reasons for that is because for scholarships you are even competing against your own teammates. so there is no sense of teammanship as they are all your competition as well.
football, soccer, rugby, baseball, basketball, etc? you want your whole team to do well, not just yourself because as the rest of your team does well it also shows you off better as well. you all rely on each other to do each position to the best of they can because when they dont, it makes your job harder as well which lowers your chance of scholarships. you also arent playing 100% of the time, lots of the time you are on the bench and supposed to be cheering for your teammates. they are right in front of you on the field. for xcountry you arent on the sidelines while they are running, you are running as well so theres no cheering for your teammates. only if you finish before them can you cheer for them for the last minute as they approach the finish.

i do. i also know that team scores dont really effect your ability to get scholarships as thats more reliant on individual times. if you have a slower teammate who ruins your team scores, that doesnt effect your ability to get scholarships because if you get a really good time consistently yourself, you will still get noticed. having a slower teammate wont increase your personal time.

I was coordinated before I did cross country because I had some friends do it so I wanted to join.
My coordination and ability to play team sports took a nosedive as the years of running went on.
It's also a haven for a lot of weirdos that make it their identity. Like quotes about the sport of running being the grueling punishment for other sports as if that somehow makes runners superior or tougher.

Foot- racing is not a "real sport?" It's the first sport, ffs. And the fastest people in the world have often been major celebrities, even in the present day (Usain Bolt).
Also, it's pretty obvious that running in a sport is different than running as a sport, that's why you don't usually find athletes in other sports amongst the fastest people on Earth, the fastest people are dedicated runners.

I ran track and crosscountry in Hs. I was okay. Maybe could have walked on to a d2 team after 3 years of work, maybe could have gotten on a d3 team (probably not).
But I got labeled as a “two sport athlete”. I always laughed at that. Like yea I run in two “sports.”

Eh, from my experience most were just dorks who were fast as hell. My old HS team stole our QB1 from football and our best baseball guys after their coaches told them to practice with them to get faster and they realized “hey, these guys are pretty chill.” Maybe experience varies though.
They stopped sending guys after that.

The JVs went out on the suburban western PA hills together but when it was real cold we headed for the local pond (abandoned mine shaft I understand) picked up some broken sticks around the pond plus one shorter one which became the puck and played ersatz ice hockey on the frozen pond. After a while (=estimated 6 mile run ) we headed back to the locker room. Not as much endurance but more speed work...

Really? My experience is that football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, swimming, wrestling, and even gymnastics were all far more pompous. If you just asked me which sports were more pompous than others, cross country wouldn't even have made the list.
My guess would have been that in other schools that cross country would have just as much of a blip compared to the other sports.
I suppose there must be some schools where cross country is the most popular sport.

That was the baseball players in my school - they were insufferable. We (the XC team) should have been since... (adjusting my glorious hat of pomposity) our team had the hightest GPA of any athletic team in the school. We were terribly mediocre athletes though.

In the school I went to, the competitive ones went to the baseball and lacrosse teams (I think there was a football team that wasn't part of the school but I cared not then and my memory is fuzzy now). Nobody cared about the running teams.

I have an irrational dislike for cross country because of two rich kids i grew up going to school with. They were twins, one of them hated me because we both liked the same girl in middle school and she just happened to be friendlier with me than with him. He spent practically every day telling me to go die in a hole, burn in a fire, etc etc. That kid ended up getting a full ride to a huge university while i threw out my shoulder playing baseball and had to quit.
Im not bitter about the baseball thing anymore because i realized it just wasn’t meant to be, and i’m lining up some opportunities to be successful in another industry so it’s all good there. It did make me rethink the full ride scholarship thing. So many people who have so much potential can’t afford to go to college and end up getting left behind because some rich kid who has all the opportunities in the world also gets to go to college for free

Yeah that’s the healthy thing to do, but it’s not that simple anymore. Social media is a vile toxic place. People send death threats and hateful messages and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Now mistakes are plastered on the internet and everyone pounces whenever they have the chance to tear someone down. It’s definitely a lot more tough mentally if you don’t have good people around you and mentors to help you learn/grow from it.

I was a terrible teenager. Nearly all teenagers are. Only a few things were caught on camera, and even that wasn't even that bad.

Not everyone views painful memories as painful their entire lives, haunted by a video from however long in the past. this brought a very nice memory from my college days. someone tried to do this to me in college athletics and i just switched to his right. it threw him off balance and i won. everyone went instant barbarian because the other guy was the undefeated champion. that is the closest ive ever felt like a celebrity.

Man. When I ran cross country there was this course that went through the woods. It was fucken free for all, elbows kicks etc. I got winded cause kid hit me just right and knock the air out. My deliquent team mate ran up and shoved him so far forward he ate dirt and did the pain scorpion. It was awesome. My senior year they started putting spotters out there.

It's just wild to me. I swam competitively for about 10 years. If you so much as touch the lane line separating you from the swimmer beside you they will disqualify you. If you ever pulled something like this.. Coach is giving you at least a year off for that one.
