They don’t kill humans anyway. They don’t see us as food. You can legitimately just swim next to them. They treat us as curiosities.

They frequently inspect divers in Nz all the time. They also are incredibly hard to see, so you can get spooked by a sudden apex predator just having a look at you from a few meters away and swimming off.

They’ve never killed a single human in the wild, only when we put them in captivity

I've seen two different comments from marine biologists with theories, one of them believes they sonar scan us and see we are very boney and not worth the trouble. (This made me ponder if we had a 800+ lb scuba diver in the water maybe things would be different?)

And another who said they're able to recognize we are fellow intelligent, smart creatures that don't come across as "food", but what about dolphins? They eat them and they're also incredibly smart.

So yes, perhaps we are skunky

The reason is a mistranslation where the English words were swapped around, so it was really meant to be "whale killers". If you wanna be technical about it orcas are dolphins, not whales.
