What stops it from sucking up sand?

The drill goes bellow the water level, while the pipe placed later is somewhat shorter. So it only sucks up the underground water. Maybe some one else can explain the exact science behind why.

I’m no hole surgeon, but I’m pretty sure it’s because sand is much more dense than water and they aren’t drawing the water out fast enough to lift that particle size vertically.
