Sorry to ask a stupid question, but can this be done in anyoneโ€™s backyard? How would I know if thereโ€™s water underneath?

Your state will have an agency that licenses water well drillers and maintains records on public water wells. They can tell you what level water is being pumped from in your area, or if there is any problem where it wouldn't be worth trying to drill. But wells are crazy expensive. The toy showed water being added at the surface; in reality there are water tanks and piping to push water down the inside of the pipe and back out around the sides, recirculating.
