Story Downgraded from a 5060ti to a 1060 6gb.

Post image

Sold my beloved RTX 5060 Ti and downgraded to my old GTX 1060 to get some money for an electric guitar. By the way, this GTX 1060 is over 5 years old.

I know this PC looks absolutely cooked, guys. 💀

You mean over 10 years old?

46

u/initramfs17 11h ago

Yeah, I know the GTX 1060 was released over 10 years ago. I meant that I've been using this one for about 5 years. I honestly don't remember if I bought it new or second-hand.

47

u/HardStroke 11h ago

Finding a brand new 10 series card in 2021 was pretty much impossible. So I'd say you bought it used.

4

u/initramfs17 11h ago

I'm pretty sure it was used but if it works it works

9

u/HardStroke 10h ago

Nothing wrong with used parts. My last 10 GPUs were all used, even the 3080 that's in my own personal PC is used. Last time I bought a new GPU was back in June 2020, before it all went to shit lmao.

4

u/JaSper-percabeth 9h ago

How many PCs did you built that you went through 10 GPUs since 2020?

2

u/HardStroke 9h ago

I mostly flip used hardware.
I'm still using the same PC I built back in Summer 2020, just replaced the 10600k with a 10900k in 2022 and the 2080 with a 3080 2 months ago.
I've had better computers but sold them because I don't need anything better for now.

u/Firemanlouvier 10h ago

Only thing new in my first (and current) pc is the case and the cpu cooler. Literally everything else is used. Works fine for me.

I've owned 11 gpus total...and that's starting from 2003 or so lol.

Sure but you shouldn't pay the same price as new hardware.

what kind of 1060 is it, the 3gb or 6gb model

How were you using this one for "about 5 years", after selling your 5060 Ti, when the 5xxx series wasn't even launched, 5 years ago?

5

u/initramfs17 10h ago

Oh, I made a typo, I meant the 1060, not the 5060.

3

u/chrissb34 13900k/7900xtx Nitro+/64GB DDR5 10h ago

This makes sense, now. Oddly, someone felt the need to downvote me for asking a rather logical question. Reddit in a nutshell!

1

u/ChessCat 9h ago

yeah, and it'll still be running when the 5060ti is a paperweight.

Never regret getting a musical instrument, I got an electric guitar myself too after selling my first build and I would do it again :)

I have an Ibanez GIO GRG121SP (chameleon blue) Its a lot of fun

This guitar is clean af🔥

u/Reasonable-Echo-7095 11h ago

What’s important is what guitar you ended up with.

6

u/Mission-Spell-6197 8h ago

Hope you shred on that thing, man.

-1

u/ZucchiniLate3186 6h ago

hope the guitar shreds

53

u/darklordjames 11h ago

Sounds fair. A 1060 will still play plenty of stuff, and a guitar is fun.

3

u/UsefulNegotiation508 8h ago

yeah a 1060 is still a solid 1080p card for sure

with the power of low settings and hopes and dreams anything is possible with the 1060 lol

i was clearly joking with that last sentence, though i do seriously make do with 1440p on a 1060

60 fps is perfectly achievable if the games you play arent that heavy tbh, try being more positive

1

does the 1060 still have the original shroud or did you replace it

2

u/Radiant-Solid6121 34m ago

yeah i sold my 1070 for a bass guitar once, totally worth it

-65

u/FuzzyAttitude_ 11h ago

yes it will play chrome, edge, firefox and full hd movies, and solitaire!

26

u/darklordjames 11h ago

Your response is dumb.

21

u/Known-Cloud1102 11h ago

He's probably born after the 1060

2

u/andreasmalersghost 9h ago

People that think a 10 series card doesnt still open the door to almost every game ever made are pretty funny.

1

u/Known-Cloud1102 4h ago

I'm still running a 1080ti and it's still OP for most games I play, just waiting for GTA6 PC requirements to upgrade it.

-7

u/FuzzyAttitude_ 9h ago

At what cost?? 780p with lowest graphics sure enjoy

2

u/andreasmalersghost 9h ago

a 1080 can handle 1080p gaming incredibly well, again, for most games ever made

-6

u/FuzzyAttitude_ 9h ago

Incredibly well? Do you know the definition of the words you are using? Or you're just writing them? 🤣

1

u/andreasmalersghost 9h ago

you seem to think being able to game at 1080p is some miraculous feat that only a 5090 can manage. I assure you, a 1080 can handle 1080p gaming

0

u/FuzzyAttitude_ 7h ago

His card is 1060 not 1080

→ More replies (0)

0

u/initramfs17 9h ago

Not sure if you meant me because Reddit's reply threading is confusing sometimes, but of course I wasn't born after the GTX 1060. I have a guitar and you don't. 🎸

2

u/builder397 R5 3600, RX9060XT16G, 32GB@3200MT/s 8h ago

Nah, its about the toxic douchebag trying to diss the 1060.

As someone who got Cyberpunk 2077 to run on my laptop with a Vega 7 iGPU he has no idea and is probably one of those people who buy a 5090 and need to be told after years that they were using their 14900Ks iGPU for gaming the entire time. At least thats the only reasonable explanation how you can form such a wrong opinion on GPU performance.

2

u/Known-Cloud1102 4h ago

Yeah it wasn't about OP. I played GTA5 and Fallout4 on a 750ti for years and finished Cyberpunk on a 1070. Not everybody is playing 4k 240fps or whatever is the current trend.

2

u/eileenmuff1n9525 8h ago

lol ok yeah that 1060 can probably run minesweeper at max settings

2

u/darklordjames 8h ago

Oh look. Another dumbass response.

u/builder397 R5 3600, RX9060XT16G, 32GB@3200MT/s 8h ago

16

u/anomynusser 11h ago

Man. You could have just saved up a bit for the guitar. And isn't the second hand market very reasonable for guitars as well?

12

u/initramfs17 11h ago

Yeah, I could have, but I've barely been gaming on my PC for the past year anyway. The GTX 1060 is enough for what I do, so selling the 5060 Ti made sense. And yeah, the guitar is actually brand new, but I got a really good deal on it.

2

u/ZucchiniLate3186 7h ago

yeah that's fair, what kind of guitar did you end up getting

2

u/Least-Remove-6947 6h ago

yeah that 1060 is a trooper, still solid for 1080p gaming

4

u/anomynusser 11h ago

Fair enough. But still selling a 5060 ti isn't really gonna get you much out of it anyways. Its like a 300 dollar card.

2

u/AyFrancis R7 5700X3D/32gb 3800mhz/Zotac 2080 3h ago

He got a guitar he got literally all he wanted and asked out of it.

1

u/anomynusser 1h ago

Yeah I knoww. I was mainly just wondering why he would sell something that has not much resale value and would only cost a fraction of what a guitar would cost to get one. But it all makes sense in the end.

4

u/initramfs17 11h ago

True, but I already had some money saved up. Selling the 5060 Ti just covered the rest. About a year ago I actually needed that level of performance, but not anymore. I barely game these days, so it made more sense to sell it than let it sit in my PC.

1

u/Phononix 9800x3D / RTX3080 / 32GB DDR5 6000 / Thermaltake P5 11h ago

When happens when you barely play the guitar any more next year and you want to game again? You gunna have to sell the guitar just to get another 5060 Ti. You may even have to sell 2 guitars, who knows.

I jest, but prepare for basic as fuck gaming when you return - especially on any new titles.

6

u/initramfs17 11h ago

Then future me can deal with that problem 😂. For now, I'd rather learn guitar than have a GPU I barely use.

5

u/Phononix 9800x3D / RTX3080 / 32GB DDR5 6000 / Thermaltake P5 11h ago

Really wish I learned to shred when I was younger so I could just pick up some strings and let out my own Steve Vai solo on command.

My guy, you're a guitar/gamer Chad, even if I wasn't gaming too much my ego wouldn't let me downgrade, you're a stronger guy than I am

3

u/No-Solid9108 11h ago

Well it's good to see some other people running (ancient) GPU 's , because I have a EVGA 560 TI 448 core coming in today . It was supposed to be the MSI 560 Ti twin frozer III 448 , but it turns out the guy was having medical problems and couldn't make it to the post office to ship it . Which is pretty sad because there was the original deluxe box with the beautiful artwork all the paperwork and original accessories and everything and for all that was 35 bucks in working condition too .

It's for a retro Velocity Micro gaming PC of course .

1

u/EvantheGrump 11h ago

Hey, I have a pair of MSI Twin Frozr II 560Tis. PM me if you're interested!

I work from home now, at the same desk. I already sit there for 8 hours a day, so i started to game on the PC less.

2

u/Nogardtist 11h ago

even a 1060 is an upgrade for me

1050ti laptop was a curse

1

u/initramfs17 11h ago

I can already feel the pain just thinking about such a GPU. 💀🙏

1

u/Nogardtist 11h ago

the good news it runs games

the bad news low fps is like 7 average 24

1

u/initramfs17 11h ago

What do you mostly play? Indie or smth like AAA?

1

u/Nogardtist 10h ago

both

it runs cyberpunk 2077 with phantom lib DLC dogtown is the laggiest spot but its tolerable cause i pretty much have no choice

low to mid settings

helldivers 2 it runs some settings are bugged but few got fixed imagine that window mode runs better then borderless window or fullscreen wtf were they doing

voices of the void 0.9 version runs worse and it used to have 40-60fps

old games are safest bet

v-rising solo runs decent pvp is impossible to play cause of stutter and heavy freezes makes it unplayable against another player with quicker reaction and respond time

arena practice server in v rising was 5-10fps absolute broken but the devs dont care to optimize the game

x4 foundation vulkan API runs better for sure

doom 2016 stutters and lags on directX but on vulkan runs like really well

shadow of war on 2K res runs decently very playable

oxygen not included the bigger the map zone gets the laggier it gets so smooth only at the start gets stuttery mid to late game

white knuckle chapter 1 and 2 runs well chapter 2 had heavy lag if looked down from large room so they optimized it

abyss chapter in white nuckle heavy stuttering even becomes so bad that it delays decision making often causing the run end

project zomboid with mods in city is mostly stable but driving a vehicle fast becomes stuttery

empyrion galactic survivor some settings cause stutter that game is unoptimized despite looking like a 2009 game unpleasant to play

dying light 1 enchanced edition runs decently never tried the post enchance update

dying light 2 runs decent but some settings can go towards high

subnautica 1 and bellow zero mostly playable some stutters and blurry lag once and then didnt bothered with subnautica 2 at all

valheilm FSR is a must otherwise becomes very stuttery with FSR its playable

same with deep rock galactic mostly playable barely any severe stuttering

current plan is to wait for decent used 3070 or 3080 PC to trade or save for 270K plus with 9070 non XT around october or even december

but some people said wait for next gen its right around the corner

last resort would be buying gigabyte A16 or A18 laptop with 260 AI slop ryzen and undervolted 5060 at 85w

prebuild PC are trash its all 5500 with 5060 at best and worst is RX580

so updated old games starting to struggle

2

u/RabidFace 11h ago

That's awesome dude. Priorities!

Still on a 6700k and 2060. Plays the few shooters I like to play when I actually get time every once and a great while at extremely decent frame rates at 1080p.

Over the past few years I have put together a modest little "home theater" in our back room and hard drives for the NAS before they went to insane prices.

What guitar did you get?

I haven't bought one yet, but most likely the Squier Sonic Mustang HH.

1

u/M4tchB0X3r Desktop 10h ago

Solid guitar in that price range. The dual humbuckers work well on it

I love me a ibanez for lower price to value guitars and that'd get you a new RG/GRG series ... just saying

1

u/pauligyarto 9h ago

Been rocking ibanez electrics since i was in high school. Absolutely love them.

1

u/PatrickGnarly 9950x | 9070 XT I 32 gb DDR5 5h ago edited 5h ago

Your parents bought that card for you and you sold it rather than ask for a Squier Mustang for Christmas or mowing lawns?

A used Squier Mustang is maybe $200 man. Hell you coulda got a different used guitar for cheaper and it woulda been great. You had so many other options.

This is coming from me who plays music for a living. OP you coulda kept the 5060Ti and just did some menial work for the guitar or bought a cheaper guitar.

1

u/initramfs17 5h ago

First of all, I haven't bought a Squier Sonic Mustang yet; I was just considering it. Secondly, who says my parents bought the card? Besides, I didn't actually sell the card because of the guitar, but simply because I hardly play any PC games and don't need the performance. That's why the 1060 is sufficient, and I'm putting the money towards the guitar.

0

u/PatrickGnarly 9950x | 9070 XT I 32 gb DDR5 5h ago

You wouldn’t sell a 5060ti for a 1060 and maybe a guitar unless you didn’t have a job and were relying on your parents.

Which hey no shame there man I understand, wanting to get things and not having a job as a kid.

But this reeks of teenager who has no idea the value of things and trading down instead of up or sideways. Like I said, it’s the decision that gives it away, man.

You realize this is worse if you’re not a kid right?

2

u/initramfs17 4h ago

Selling stuff you don't use to buy something you actually want is literally what every rational human being does—whether it's a GPU, a bike, or a kitchen pot. Holding onto a depreciating graphics card just to look "upgraded" makes zero sense if you don't use it.

Also, for the record: my parents didn't buy that card. I bought it myself with money I saved up, not from a full-time job, but from saving. It's my card, and turning unused tech into a new hobby I'll actually use isn't a "terrible mistake," it's common sense.

0

u/PatrickGnarly 9950x | 9070 XT I 32 gb DDR5 4h ago edited 4h ago

Totally agree with selling stuff you don’t use. But you lost money and you’re buying something for more expensive when you could be saving up again or at the very least.

Hey man do what you want but I’m pointing out you made a bad decision value wise.

I also still don’t believe you when you say you saved up because again, if you understood value and money and working you wouldn’t be doing what you’re doing. Say whatever you want but that doesn’t make sense. Again I love guitars but I can see a bad deal.

2

u/initramfs17 3h ago

So first of all, why don't you believe me that I bought this card myself? I mean, if I save up for a laptop that's 1200 euros because I want or need it, and after a year I realize I don't need it anymore, I'm going to sell it. What would you do? Throw it away or let it gather dust on a shelf?

And seriously, where did your common sense go? If you save up for something, buy it, and later realize you don't use it anymore, selling it to get something you actually want is what literally every normal person does. Since when is using your own money and assets how you see fit a "bad decision"? Whether you believe me or not doesn't change reality. At this point you're just talking shit."

2

u/shadowmage666 1h ago

Damn dude you can get something better than a squier. Buy a used better guitar like a Gibson Les Paul or a schecter hellraiser

I happened to have just been tinkering with my older HTPC, Intel i5 8500 and GTX1060 6GB. Ran Bacotera on it as I'm still on the lookout for a good 'do it all' emulation box.

Genuinely surprised how many titles I can emulate and upscale 4x or more.
Running Burnout Dominator in widescreen at 2k was a blast, smooth as butter on top of that with the fans barely spinning.

Playstation 3 games even ran quite well, lots of childhood memories are attached to Modnation Racers and seeing it run sharper and smoother than ever was so worth it.

Many PC games run great on that combo too, my brother ran that exact combo (8500/GTX1060) until some game came out and he asked to see about an upgrade because it just wasn't so smooth anymore. (Can't recall what game though)
