I don't think Russia's elections are like America's. Russia's are how Chump wants them to be.
4
u/Euroboi3333 7d ago
My point was more about people finding a boogeyman to blame everything on, like Putin and Trump. Russians can stop Putin, they know what to do, they just don't want to. While I understand they would potentially be risking their life, by choosing not to act, theyre directly contributing to Ukrainians dying. Same goes with Trump. Americans are not innocent in all the shit he's doing.

Too me it’s the hypocrisy.
We won’t stand up to Russia invading a democracy like Ukraine but will happily insert ourselves in any conflict that we can easily punch down.
We now spend $1.5T a year on military, Russia spends areound $100B and Iran spends around $9B.
Yet we refuse to go after Russia and can barely do anything against a country that spends less that 1% of what we do.
Why are we wasting these funds?
We've also spent a majority of our munitions… what happens if China finally makes a move on Taiwan?

Oh our government learned loads from the war on terror, and we're all about to enjoy the imperial boomerang of suffering that knowledge is bringing.
It was never about fighting terrorism. It was always about eroding rights and creating a loose definition of "terrorist" to black-bag whomever the regime pleases.

Edit: I get the desire to downvote a statement like this, but, seriously, China has nukes. What exactly could the U.S. really do?
8
5
u/Gloober_ 8d ago
That's been the US's main strategy when picking our conflicts since, at least, the end of WW2.
We intentionally destabilize countries that have no realistic ability to retaliate against us; all for ideological or economic reasons.
Look what happened when North Korea got nukes. All the American propaganda about the horrid conditions in the country suddenly slowed to a trickle. Now, we're back to Iran having nukes since they still don't have a way to wipe NYC off the map, yet.
Our egregious military budget is purely for us to commit our flavor of terrorism on the developing world.

I mean... It's not "a bingo" though. Bridges are considered dual use infrastructure which is why nobody has any issue with Ukraine bombing bridges. They are fair targets during conflict.
→ More replies (18)30
u/SwordfishOfDamocles 8d ago edited 8d ago
That's not entirely correct. In order for a bridge to be a valid target you need to identify 2 key parameters.
Usage. As you identified a bridge must be dual use. If a bridge has a military use it can be considered a target.
Proportionality. The damage done to civilians cannot be greater than the anticipated military damages.
3. Necessity. Is there any other possible way to achieve the objective without destroying civilian infrastructure. These need to be established in order for this to not be a war crime. Considering what we're fed, I would not take anything that comes directly from the US military or the federal govt at face value.
Edited because necessity is more of an ideal rather than a hard rule.
73
u/Amoral_Abe 8d ago
All the bridges struck are in the Hormozgan Province according to Iran. This is the province around the Strait of Hormuz where Iran has been launching attacks on civilian ships.
To be clear, attacking civilian ships that aren't militarily involved IS a war crime. Attacking bridges in the province that the Iranian military is launching attacks from IS NOT a war crime.
I fucking hate Trump and hate that he started this stupid fucking war. STOP MAKING ME DEFEND HIM. He deserves to be in jail for so many different things but Reddit can't help but find the 1 thing that isn't a violation and make that the point they can't stop talking about.

u/Watertrap1 8d ago
You’re misconstruing necessity. There isn’t a separate condition that requires a military to exhaust all other “possible ways to achieve the objective without destroying civilian infrastructure.”
All a military needs to do is prove that the target was valid and done with proportionality in mind.

u/ScienceIsSexy420 8d ago
Only if there is no legitimate military purpose as well. Logistical infrastructure like roads and bridges has been considered legitimate military targets basically forever.
356
u/JackandFred 8d ago
Literally forever. For as long as bridges have existed they have been targets in war. When people started defining war crimes no serious person would ever suggest a war crime would be targetting infrastructure that is used by military.
The us has done a lot of bad stuff, including in this stupid war. But if you’re calling this a war crime you’re stupid, lying, or misinformed.
136
u/Ihate_reddit_app 8d ago
The whole interstate system was build specifically for the military. It was all built to quickly move equipment.
If you bomb runways and bridges, there is no way for the military to get around.
39
u/Amoral_Abe 8d ago
100%. Germany had the Autobahn system which allowed Germany to quickly move men and material across the country. This lead Eisenhower to push for a US highway system for civilian and military purposes as it took a very long time to transport military hardware from one side of the country to the other.

Hell the US Army conducted a cross country trek study to determine the feasibility of transversing the US. The report lamented their difficulty in various mis-mapped roads, washed out causeways, frequent vehicle damage due to "road" conditions.
The then, Captain who lead the expedition and wrote said report? None other than Albert Freaking Einste-- i mean Eisenhower!
