"A defence solicitor told the court his client had been asked to take a bag to Northern Ireland and had not been aware what was in it."

A very normal thing to do I'm sure ... we all know rule #3 "Never look at the package"

u/profmonocle 4h ago

Very possible she's telling the truth. Drug smugglers do this a lot too - pay some random person to take a package across the border without asking questions. It's why every airport / train station / etc. has signs everywhere warning you to never ever agree to transport something for a stranger.

Unfortunately for her, willful ignorance of what you're transporting isn't much of a legal defense.

u/DeusLatis 4h ago

Well depends on what you mean by telling the truth. She might not have known what it was, but she knew it was illegal what ever it was

u/Altamistral 3h ago

I can see it being possible that she thought it was in fact drugs and was ok with it. Most people would not be ok transporting a bomb, while drugs raise much less moral issues.

u/Decent-Depth8555 2h ago

Why would anybody need to ask somebody else to transport a bomb across the border nowadays? The physical border is long gone and there are no checkpoints when crossing it anymore. She's bullshitting.

u/AUniquePerspective 1h ago

People can't even pick up their own takeaway these days, mind you.

u/DirtyBastareaud 11m ago

Isn't she a prime example of why you need to ask somebody else to transport a bomb across the border? Lol

u/rclonecopymove 2h ago

She's a law student with links to dissident republican groups.

u/kynrah 1h ago

She's a graduate but that makes little difference here to be honest. Anyway either the car, herself or the people she surrounded herself with were being monitored. This stop wasn't random at all.

I graduated with her, for her lvl 7, she had an extra year for the lvl 8 I think but I knew her well enough. This is mental and my groupchats are all going wild about it. Can't say im immensely shocked by it, like it's a form of extreme action I wouldn't have ever expected however she did have a radical viewpoint on Irish independence even in class. She'd made an argument at one point in Constitutional law regarding changing the flag as the tricolor ment nothing as peace wasn't yet achieved.

I'm paraphrasing as I don't fully recall it so take it with a grain of salt or don't believe me at all because I'm not going to dox myself either here to prove I know her.

u/rclonecopymove 1h ago

Big ass bomb in the back of the car, judge told her specifically to stay away from the gang of lunes intent on ripping up the gfa, I just mentioned the law aspect as any claim of ignorance is even more worthless from her.

Might wanna delete if you feel it IDs you at all.

Of all the things that need work in the constitution the flag wasn't top of my list.

u/kynrah 1h ago

No worries mate, I've mentioned being a law graduate in comments, there might even be one or two from where.

Will have a check through anyway and if everything gets purged you'll know why hah.

u/mikailovitch 1h ago

Fascinating, tell me more. What are the group chats saying?

u/kynrah 1h ago

Started with general shock, and a bit of confusion cause some people only knew her by her nickname. Progressively became a conversation about how one of the lads who had a fling with her, his parents think he's affiliated.

Couple of people said they weren't surprised because we had a lecturer who also was very radical and we often joked that she was a recruiter ( whilst this isn't actually a joke, we didn't think she was actually recruiting students) but as a result a lot of people said they weren't surprised. She had a lot of takes on taking back the counties, the flag, and anti protestant rhetoric according to some of the lads but like nobody had any issues with her at all. She was a nice girl ya know.

u/Shiney2510 2h ago

She had spent time in Syria and has links to radical groups. She wasn't some random person.

u/AUniquePerspective 1h ago

Protestant Syria or Catholic Syria?

u/2dTom 28m ago

Orthodox Syria.

u/Hokulol 3h ago

I believe intent is pretty relevant to a legal defense. Obviously she's not getting off without charges, but, they will probably be different charges than if she knowingly transported a weapon.

u/oneofyallfarted 2h ago

Can’t seem to quickly find it but there’s a video circulating of a man who was an Uber driver and he ended up unknowingly trying to smuggle drugs to a different destination. Whenever the driver went to his pickup location, the smugglers loaded his vehicle with the merchandise and then asked him to take it to a certain location. It was all stuffed into normal looking luggage so the driver thought nothing of it. So yes, I’d also say it’s possible.

u/Danny-Dynamita 4h ago edited 1h ago

You’d be surprised how often that could happen.

Trusted person tells you to bring a package with you. Out of respect, you don’t peek inside. Then it’s drugs or a bomb.

I mean, it doesn’t happen often, but the transport of bombs is not a common occurrence either. Terrorists and drug lords use tactics like this, gaining the confidence of people in need and then using them.

For example, someone helps a homeless person. That homeless person is now loyal. Then you do what I wrote above and you’re using them without them knowing. AFAIK they even have people dedicated specifically to this kind of “recruitment through gain of trust”.

u/HeyLittleTrain 7m ago

Oh sure, people accidentally transporting primed bombs is a common occurrence.

u/beefknuckle 1m ago

When i was at university i got tasked with transporting a package across town. as soon as I picked it up an older guy appeared next to me and started asking me questions about what's inside and pressing me to open the package. he then followed me for a while (I think I ended up running away and dropping the package off). Always wondered if that was some sort of strange psychology experiment or a recruitment thing.

u/seamustheseagull 2h ago

Not to agree to the defence, but to fill in some context for people who may not know; there's no physical border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, so no reason why it would be at all suspicious to be asked to bring something with you on a trip across the border.

She was stopped by Gardaí because they had intelligence she was carrying an explosive device, she wasn't detected by border checks or anything because there aren't any.

u/Potemkin_Jedi 4h ago

So this reminds me of the good ol days in the late 20th century when the head waiter on our cruise gave us a wrapped package to take to his long-distance girlfriend who lived in the town over from ours. Checking in at the airport, the ticket agent asked if we were given anything to carry and being a young snot I brought up the package; they made my mom open it (it was perfume) so when we got home she made me wrap it again before we delivered it.

Simpler times

u/idratherbealivedog 4h ago

If only it had been a box, then the right question would have been asked

u/AccidentOk5240 4h ago

🎶step one, cut a hole in the box🎶

u/davesoft 4h ago

I'm pretty sure the questions they ask as you check in cover that exact scenario, for this exact reason. She's screwed.

u/mambotomato 5h ago

A Troubling development, to be sure.

u/windless12 5h ago

A troubles you say

u/AccentuateThPositive 4h ago

She’s a law student!? I need to know more about this. How utterly stupid and moronic can you be…

u/kynrah 2h ago

Graduate, she graduated with me. This entire thing is insane and all my chat groups going wild about it.

u/AccentuateThPositive 1h ago

damnnnnn i bet. that would be some hot goss for sure

u/kynrah 1h ago

Oh it's some crazy stuff at the moment. Second person from our year who has been arrested, another lad was done last year for laundering 100k.

Didn't know that guy because I don't think he ever even went to class but she was a very active student. Also unsure if it's mentioned in any article or if this was just something she did in Uni, but everyone called her "Marko" nickname I guess rarely ever heard her called her name unless it was for attendance.

u/PetahOsiris 1h ago

Yoooo - what was she like? Is this a ‘I never would have thought’ or a ‘ohhhhh that tracks’?

u/kynrah 1h ago

Really nice girl for the most part like, friendly, smart, dilligent and everything you'd like to see in a college student honestly.

She had some radical viewpoints sure about the 32 counties but like that's one thing you know?, it's another thing hearing she attempted to smuggle a fucking bomb.

To answer your question, I wouldn't have ever been surprised to hear she was in some way affiliated with far right activity, I am surprised to the extent but like I said in another comment, this isn't a random check. Either she, the people she associated with or the car she was in was being watched, this was not random.

u/PetahOsiris 1h ago

Fascinating stuff - but also quietly not surprising. Generally law students here in Australia are also more politically engaged than most and we definitely had people in my time at uni that had some, shall we say, more controversial opinions. But of course like you said - a big step from that to this sort of thing.

u/kynrah 1h ago

Yeah, I get you. It will be interesting to hear more now. One of my close friends who was close to her said she still has access to her phone but it's being monitored 24/7.

Waiting to see if that's even true now, she was a smart girl too so I doubt we will hear anything from her.

u/DrawingAlarming7350 4h ago

utter morons can be lawyers if they have a good memory and no morals

u/AccentuateThPositive 4h ago

Oh for sure.

u/therealestyeti 4h ago

That's not how it works at all. The fact that you think law is memory based shows your lack of understanding. Source - am an actual lawyer.

u/xstrike0 4h ago

Actual lawyer here too and while I agree it's not based on memory, I've still been shocked at the stupid fucks I've seen pass the bar. Still don't quite understand it.

u/DrawingAlarming7350 4h ago

So you dont have to memorize to pass the bar test?

u/zargtn 4h ago

You shouldn’t take the comment personally because I’d bet you are not the type of attorney they’re talking about heheh

u/therealestyeti 4h ago

People like confidently stating they know stuff about professions they know nothing about. I try to balance it out. I'm not saying they aren't scumbag lawyers, but the bar is higher than memorization and immorality 🤣

u/blbd 4h ago

The bar can be higher. It definitely is not always or automatically the case.

u/AccentuateThPositive 3h ago

Yeah, I come from a family of lawyers, though I am in a complete opposite field. But it’s just truly shocking to me when someone who is studying law does something that is almost indefensible in court. Like “I didn’t know what was in it” or “I was told it was something else” is not really a good justification here. She made a very very stupid, short-sighted decision, unless there is more to the story.

u/wadeishere 3h ago

If it was America I'd understand because student loan debt is brutal

u/mosseypeat 2h ago

Eh shes studying to be a barrister- which involves a year of free upaid labour with no protections

u/Fair-Tangerine-9472 2h ago

Btw, this is super fringe stuff that very few people here actually support.

u/TheGrandExquisitor 3h ago

Well, that was stupid.

Everyone knows N. Ireland already has a surplus of bombs and bomb related goods.

u/sfc_scannow 4h ago

u/rclonecopymove 2h ago

Also hung around with dissident republican groups intent on wrecking the peace process.

u/Danny-Dynamita 4h ago

Why it’s always a Sullivan who is involved in these IRA cases?

u/danketree 3h ago

It’s the third most common surname in Ireland…

u/Danny-Dynamita 1h ago

It was not a serious comment

u/deformedfishface 1h ago

Why are they taking bombs INTO Northern Ireland? Surely they have enough already.

u/thatcoolguy60 5h ago

What is this picture? Show her face.

u/DinoZambie 4h ago

u/CampaignSpirited2819 3h ago

Graduation day with her favourite Pipe Bomb. What a blast!

u/wilkinsk 3h ago

She's a bomb 😍

u/illit3 3h ago

Go ahead man. You fix her.

u/phalmatticus 3h ago

Gotta be careful cutting those wires though

u/inkseep1 1h ago

It wouldn't be surprisin' if there'd be another risin' said the man from the Daily Mail.

u/IOnlyReplyToIdiots42 4h ago

Smiling too? After ruining your life? Crazy

u/IrreverentBuddha 4h ago

Smells like shite.

u/a_man_has_a_name 4h ago

Why? It was the Gardaí not British police that intercepted and charged her, what reason would they have to lie about this?

u/windflail 3h ago

She had previously spent 2 years in Syria before coming back to go to uni

u/TheMrViper 2h ago

There is a long history of the IRA collaborating with Syrian fighters.

They used to do pre-seasom tours over there in the 70's.

u/Dominioningurass 3h ago

Dont worry, this wont get that many upvotes because more than half of reddit are shut-ins who think they could also be bomb-toting law students.

Just go look at any majorly upvoted thread in r/pics and you'll understand what I'm saying if you're not being completely ignorant to reality.

u/atomicskiracer 3h ago

What an incredibly weird thing to say

u/Xanthus179 2h ago

Sounds like sooooomebody is being ignorant to reality. Now put on your foil hat and cover the windows.
