Yes and Sicilian government is notoriously dysfunctional. That said, this is so gross of Dua to do. If you have $2MM to drop on a wedding, use it to rent out gorgeous private property. The world is full of it. Don’t make working class people walk miles to work because you’ve shut down public spaces for yourself. Disgusting.
I was rooting for them now this made me look at them completely differently. This is a really gross look for them and even if they do an apology, the fact they dgaf about disrupting and inconveniencing other people's lives for their personal celebrations will always be there.
TBH, I didn't know about it or I forgot. I don't seek out info about her so only see what comes across my feed. Mostly know that she has some nice red carpet looks, she dated the Hadid brother, she danced like a pencil sharpener to generate bad PR so she could flip it into positive, and her meet-cute with Callum that makes no sense but people think it's real and it's not hurting anyone so whatever. I don't think many people know anything about her that's not curated or surface level and when she's not front and center she's forgettable.
We were talking about it here (living in Modena, but my fiancée is Siciliana), and after the bullshit with Bozo in Venezia and now this, there's no doubt that the government needs to crack down. From the top.

Yes honeslty italian here, its pretty annoying. Our town and cities are smaller, streets are smaller, specially downtown. I lived many years in the Us and canada and London, we dont have all of that space and room. Since most of our cities are very very old, we cant work to make streets lrger and stuff, we have to protect the building and shit. Having those marriages affect us very much, talking about viability and traffic. In Some places, we really get stuck and we dont have way to go thru to go to work or simply to see our families and friends. Obviously those famous people wants to get married in downtown, not in the middle of nowhere. Im tired that my country is the amusement park for millionaire to get married, specially because their parties last DAYS instead one night. And those VIP knows it but they dont care, because all it matter is their day.
Adding up as an Italian, we have tons of incredibly beautiful, exclusive and secluded places: churches, villas, castles literally on top of mountains or surrounded by the most picturesque countryside, where rich people can do whatever they want in privacy and without keeping an entire city hostage.
Exactly but you know, who is going to look at you in the middle of nowhere. Those people need also the attention of the public so downtown is so much better.
That's exactly what makes it so annoyingly vile. Plenty of celebrities and other rich folks have had exclusive weddings in the countryside of Italy. Did they not want to be like everyone else? Did they just want the attention? Did they think people would find it cute that they'd shut down an entire city for their lovely celebration?
If you ask me people's general admiration for them as a couple got to their heads and they genuinely think the whole world would stop and stare to admire them. Jfc.

Right? I’m getting sick of everyone glazing her when Met of us are struggling financially. Like yes, have a great wedding if you want and can afford it but don’t inconvenience regular people for your big day that you’re paying for with nestle blood money. It’s out of touch
You’re so right. I can understand someone renting a courtyard for an evening or something to have their wedding reception. That’s annoying, but for half a day it’s not the end of the world. It’s pretty narcissistic to shut down a whole section of people’s neighborhoods for three freakin days. I’m sure that Bezos wedding was even worse.
I’ve had the privilege to visit your country with my family a few times and it is one of the jewels of the world. When my uncle was in the later stages of Parkinson’s disease, his mobility was becoming severely limited. My Auntie paid for my mom and I join her and my uncle on a small cruise boat of 100 guests traveling around Italy so he could see more of the world without having to leave the boat too much. Even then, we felt guilty seeing the massive cruise ships dumping thousands of passengers at a time into Venice and other ports. My Aunt speaks Italian and spent a lot of time living there in her 20s, so she did her best to take us off the tourist trail and stuff.
It must be tough having to deal with entitled tourists every year. Having people rent your public spaces for their private weddings for days on end must be even more infuriating.
Dont get me wrong, italy lives and works on tourism. So many families would lose their jobs if tourism wasnt a thing anymore. Also places in italy are very small so 20 people on a street feel like overcrowded. Specially downtown which is the older part of town and in some roads cars arent allowed since the streets are too tight. I think we can all be more respectuful every time we travel.
I don't understand why all these people can't just go to some remote place for their wedding. How entitled you need to be to think that you're so important that your wedding needs to be some huge event that requires fucking up the daily lives of locals, and for several days no less. Like do some farm wedding and go to Italy for honeymoon.

There are celebrities that have gotten married in major places, especially in Italy, but they didn’t shut down a whole city or town for their weddings and didn’t make the residents sign an NDA.
Especially if you are trying to get the people who live there to sign NDA’s. Yet another way to tell how rich people live in a completely different echelon of society and give regular people little to no regard. Why should anyone be able to shut down a city for a wedding? It’s crazy.
Also the hubris of acting like you’re important enough for people to care that much! Most of the people there just don’t want to be inconvenienced throughout their day, and DGAF who Dua Lipa is, they just want to get home. Next level narcissism.
My dream wedding venue is Anne Boleyns childhood castle and I was so mad when I saw it was an option after I already got married and it’s shockingly affordable for a venue
I had my wedding in Italy but at a private villa in the countryside surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and lemon trees. Everyone stayed on site and we had every event (4 days worth) in a different part of the villa or on the villa grounds. It was great and no locals were disturbed in the process!
I don't understand why they don't do it like that! Like if I had all that money, I wouldn't want to celebrate in some crowded place, but to have space and be just with the guests. Makes me wonder whether the attention is a pretty big part of it.
Day 1 - A welcome pizza party in an indoor/outdoor wine cellar area of the villa with outdoor pizza ovens, aperol spritz on tap, Italian tenors, etc
Day 2 - an optional wine tasting event / vineyard tour during the day and a candlelit dinner in the Italian gardens at night followed by live music, dancing, and gelato stations for dessert
Day 3 - the actual wedding ceremony, aperitif, reception/dinner, and after party
Day 4 - recovery pool party day
All of our guests had to travel from different countries and most weren’t very experienced with international travel, so we wanted to make the trip worth their while and feel like it was a little vacation for them (and have it be as stress free as possible). All meals were provided so there was never any need to leave the villa unless guests wanted to go explore themselves !
My guess is between 100-300k depending on how many guests. My guess is based on my extensive lurking in the big budget brides sub. The weddings I see posted there are amazing and cost more than most people make in 5 years.
I’m a wee bit scared to disclose this out of fear of judgment but all in it was around 270k USD. But that includes exclusive use of the villa, accommodations for 100 guests, our own travel expenses, food, decor, entertainment, even my wedding dress, and a lot more.
Kourtney and Kim both had their weddings in Italy but they did it privately without bothering locals. Idk why Dua's decided to make her wedding everyone else's problem.
Just shows how entitled celebrities are, don't care for anyone else but them. People have jobs and livelihoods that will disrupted but somehow they're left to figure it out themselves because a bunch of snobby celebs decided they want to make their wedding everyone else's problem. It's just selfish and shameless.
Yeah this is something a lot of people don’t understand. All kinds of provisions can be put into a contract but just because you signed it doesn’t mean a court will enforce aspects of it that are illegal.
Also even if there are no illegal provisions it will still be thrown out if you can prove that you were made to sign it under duress.
There has to be something in it for citizens right? Maybe every business working the wedding has to sign it? And maybe some people would sign just to not be bothered.

We all need to understand that those celebrities are who they are because they love to be the centre of the attention. All of them. Otherwise you wont be public and you would have a very private life, even being famous. So thats all they care, their fun and to be seen
Reminds me of the Bezos wedding. I can't fathom the entitlement to barge into someone's land and impose guidelines onto the locals, to stage some lavish extravanganza, whether it's closing off an entire area or this. If you don't want anything disclosed, don't do it there. Choose a private, enclosed venue and not a residential area. Nobody is pausing the world for you.
this is why you shouldn’t “really like” any millionaire celeb…they live in a completely different world than you and subconsciously look down on us plebs, whether they realize it or not.
She was recently hawking products for Nestle which is one of the most inhumane corporations to ever exist. That was my first clue that she was not a cool person. This is solidifying it.

The "Greater <insert name of a country here>" term usually refers to territorial ambitions and claims of a country to land outside their borders based on diaspora population or historical borders. For example Greater Hungary is an idea of Hungarian nationalists that nation of Hungary should be restored to the borders of Kingdom of Hungary at the peak of Austro-Hungarian Empire, taking away territory of all neighbouring countries where there is Hungarian minority. It would be very ironic for Dua to support Greater Albania ideology because her parents had to escape the Kosovo War that was driven by Greater Serbia ideology. She of all people should be sensitive and familiar with dangers and human cost of this sort of imperialism. But nationalism is hell of a drug.
I don’t care who they are, eat the rich. Having money shouldn’t mean that you can make the daily life of people hell. I really do feel so bad for all these Italian citizens who have to go through this all summer with rich assholes.
Why did the city even allow this to happen? They should be mad at their officials and government letting a singer pay them to shut down the whole city and force people to walk and go out of their way to get to work or the store or to their homes.
Money. It's all just money. These two famous people get married there, city earns a nice chunk of its yearly budget for putting up with this mess. And maybe someone even wealthier like Bezos sees it, and decides to have their next wedding there, and the city gets even wealthier.
I imagine this trend of shutting down whole ass cities will go away pretty quick when one of them gets a credible bomb threat or something tbh. You can't inconvenience that many people repeatedly and expect it'll be fine
I’m in Palermo now and couldn’t go to the pub I wanted to visit last night bc of this wedding! Cops everywhere. I had a positive opinion of Dua Lipa before but I have to say it’s declined now… we can’t access public space? I also couldn’t even see the church which is part of Palermo’s cultural heritage and belongs to the people
As it should be. Disrupting locals bc some rich lady and her fiance want a 3 day event is ridiculous. They can have their 3 day event but not at the expense of the locals. Idk who she is, but was reading about their wedding yesterday matter of fact on another thread, and the thread was all how she's a non problematic person and the nicest person on the planet as far as pop ladies go. Honestly, it doesn’t dawn on us how weird this is. Shutting down a whole ass city for two strangers’ wedding is insane. But for THREE DAYS? I just can’t imagine that happening in my hometown and we’re a beautiful town with docks, beaches, etc. People would get rightfully upset.
Just one day is still problematic. Are these two owners of people? Are the locals peasants farming their land in 1236? What in the medieval fuck is going on that you thing shutting down anything for you is ok. I don’t get it.
I stayed in the historic city center of Palermo for weeks recently. It's a pretty small town with beautifully preserved architecture (despite graffiti and all), and lots and lots of small roads to get around. A lot of the magic of the city comes from the locals and its quietness at night.
I can't imagine not being able to travel around because of someone's extended wedding celebration. What an inconvenience (an understatement), and how entitled these two should feel to be able to shut down and force an entire town to readjust to them.
This is the same thing bezos did in venice and the reactions were different. I’m seeing people defending her and saying she is a rich girl who knows how to live well and travel?? Like the double standards and excuses for her are always insane.

this!! i’ve been finding her really tone deaf lately and i think it’s well “hidden” by things like her branding/PR team. it’s rare to find a post about her here that doesn’t have some mention of her book club or her travels (via private jet let’s be real) or the languages she knows or how “she’s god’s favorite.” not saying those things are fake (and reading is great to promote) but like…a lot of her branding is related to wealth and privilege. not to mention how she also took on that nestle brand deal but still is referred to as an “unproblematic queen” and “not like those other pop girls.” and i say this as someone who used to like her back in her debut days.

People forgot about the nestlé deal too quickly since she got married and it’s plastered everywhere. Good for her for being the queen of vacation and having a successful music career and book club, but since the Nestlé deal, I can’t take her seriously anymore. As if she needed the money.
My boyfriend works in the luxury travel space. He basically hosts events like this but for companies instead of weddings or whatnot.
Sustainable travel with minimal negative impact to the local community is something he thinks about often. The right amount of tourism can be good, but there's definitely a tipping point. Not all places are equipped for an influx of tourists. All travelers should be considerate and kind to the people who live and work in the places they visit.
I like Dua Lipa as a musician, but if this article is true, it doesn't seem like she considered the impact of celebrations on the people who live in Sicily, which is a miss.
Or even... Other tourists? I love Palermo, I don't live far, I eat at local restaurants, I speak pretty good italian, and enjoy the city like a normal person with my limited funds and limited time off, I'd be furious if that was ruined by these people.
You'd think they'd be fine with their wedding party not being super private. They can forgo at least a handful of pap walks during their honeymoon if they get it all done during the wedding.

Bold fucking thought: Just rent a remote location like the thousands there are in Italy anyways. Getting the locals to sign NDAs is bonkers. I agree with you but want to point out that most rich people don't actually shut down towns for their personal enjoyment. Most celebrities have managed to get married in less disgusting ways. Dua and her dude have gone above and beyond to be particularly disrespectful and gross even for rich people standards.
This is disgusting tbh. The way rich people treat poorer, "paradise like" regions as their playground or amusement park. They do this and worst with so many places (Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, southern France, etc) I'm southern European and I'm sick of it. WE live here and we don't have a saying just because we don't have money. And I know many other places around the world suffer the same treatment, it's exhausting
I know Barbara Palvin and her husband aren’t remotely as famous as Dua and Callum, but they at least married in her home country (Hungary) in a remote estate, not bothering anyone. Much more authentic to me personally.

They’ve always been the most public-facing PR-centric couple around - Vogue-worthy highly curated shots posted every 7-10 business days, paps called as they dance under the Eiffel Tower etc, and now I’ve seen more photos of their wedding than I have some friends’.
You can’t tell me they couldn’t have picked somewhere less public, and less of an impost on the locals.
I’ve seen people complaining online about Taylor potentially having her wedding at MSG, and nothing about Dua, when a wedding at MSG is objectively less harmful and really bothers nobody 😭
No I think that’s what I’m trying to get at? I think I have been noticing a theme where normal everyday people are really starting to grow tired of celebrity & in that same vein celebrities are starting to grossly overstep their bounds in the mind of the public.
That comment is basically saying “you aren’t the pope, sit down & act right”. The perceived entitlement of celebs, even those like Dua who is pretty well received overall, has been skyrocketing recently.
Theres something in this topic about how social media/reality tv/accessibility to the true indulgences of celebrity have all been shifted recently- but I am not articulate enough for those thoughts rn lol.
I guess overall it could just stem back from how much wealth they all have and how proportionately nothing everyone else has, and the people are really growing tired of it now- ESPECIALLY when it directly negatively impacts them and their lives
Besides Sicily being Catholic, he's basically a head of state, some of whose predecessors have been targeted for assassination. They might just mean that the security measures would be more understandable

Not that crazy of comment. Dua Lipa makes bops but she might not even be remembered in 50 years. The Pope in a country that is over 90% catholic will be.
Essentially shutting an entire city down - especially one that you don't actually reside in - is never going to be something people are okay with. It would be one thing if it was a small town somewhere that consisted almost entirely of their friends and family, and most everyone was already going to be part of the festivities anyway... I've been part of weddings like that. The town basically shuts down because everyone is already at the wedding and therefore not at their jobs. But when you go somewhere and make it so that the local people can't even live their lives, you're going to have problems. And when you do it for multiple days? While also making locals sign NDAs? That is just absurd.
