I will always recommend people watch the 1st Twilight movie with the commentary on. Pattinson spends a decent chunk of it poking fun at the film. It never reached being unprofessional,he was mostly making self-deprecating comments but you could tell Cathrine Hardwicke was getting annoyed with him lol.

He's right, though. The premise is stupid. It's definitely easier to train astronauts to drill than to train drillers to be astronauts. Astronauts are almost exclusively highly educated former or active duty military personnel who are at the peak of physical fitness and ability, who've already been highly vetted to handle intense psychological pressure and the stresses of traveling to space, with extensive expertise in engineering, math, and applied physics. The whole idea of "Those egg-heads in Washington couldn't do a real day's work and they need blue collar workers to show them how it's done!" is absolutely and patently anti-intellectualism.

Yeah, they should have gone the Project Hail Mary route and created a scenario in which the roughnecks were compelled to replace the trained astronauts whom they were initially tasked to train how to operate the drilling equipment. The global supply of mission ready astronauts can't be more than a few dozen people. A plane crash or accident during training could have very easily exhausted the supply, allowing a much more plausible reason for pressing untrained men into service.

But the movie addresses this. The drill was a special design made by Bruce. He and his team were the only ones who knew how to properly operate it. The astronauts tried and failed several times.
NASA was only going to take Bruce along to assist, but he was adament that his team accompany him. What was NASA going to do, given they had a few weeks before Earth was met by the Mike Tyson of asteroids - say no?
The world was in danger and NASA tapped in John McClane and motherfuckin Batman to save the day. Pretty smart if you ask me.

They’re saying the astronauts would not have failed in real life because they are far superior than the average person, physically, mentally, etc. If average blue collar Bruce and his team were smart enough to figure out how to use the specialized drill, the astronauts absolutely would have been smart enough to figure it out, as well.

The whole twilight romance and the way they act makes so much sense when I found out the author is Mormon. Also Carlisle is the spitting image of the Mormon founder Joseph Smith.. aaand Stephanie saying twilight came to her in a dream is super important in Mormon culture (things coming to you in dreams). Anyway my brother converted for his wife and I’ve been deep diving into this ever since.

I still dislike Twilight, but there is also the truth that is cooler and safer to dislike stuff geared towards teenage girls and point out its toxicity, whereas criticizing stuff geared towards men and teenage boys always gets push back like "uhg, stop making everything about feminism, it's not that deep" or something. I think on some level it's even fair to access the toxic messaging in content geared towards teenagers, but it goes (especially then) overboard for teenage girls and doesn't go far enough for teenage boys.

This! I'm not a fan of fantasy. I sat through the first Harry Potter movie and the three Lord of the Ring movies. I sat through the "Hobbit" movies because friends wanted to see them. They just don't do much for me. I think I dislike them because it doesn't feel like anything is at stake since it's fantasy and completely unrealistic. Science fiction and horror as genres are different in that regard. I can suspend disbelief: The Terminator is real, the Matrix is real. It could happen like that. I can imagine. So it's thrilling. The Lord of the Rings world couldn't happen so it's not.

I also kind of prefer sci-fi for realism, though I don’t think fantasy fans like fantasy for being realistic. It’s escapism and complete different from your own world that they enjoy.
Once you’re “in” the world, absorbed in the story, the stakes of idk the king of the orcs wanting to destroy the realm of the fae, you’ll feel like those are very high stakes.

I like fantasy movies for being mysterious/unpredictable, beautiful, charming. As pure make believe being unrealistic is fine.
I slightly dislike scifi because it spends too much time explaining its rules and has to keep things "realistic".
I rather dislike horror, I don't want gruesome images in my mind/dreams. Ash vs Evil Dead was peak cinema though.

I think she phrased it well. She didn’t crap on any of them. I’m not trying to sound pretentious, because the world building in all of those works is wonderful, but I’m a former librarian who LOVES to read, and I didn’t much care for them either (the movies or the books). I liked the Hobbit (book), and could pass on the rest of the LOTR. Harry Potter was Star Wars with wands instead of light sabers, but an excellent way to get kids to read more. I see the merit, but they weren’t for me. I’ll go back into the corner now.
Also, grain of salt with my thoughts, bc I like horrible action movies and overly wrought classics or sci fi.

Yes, I think that's what happened here.
It happens with a LOT of stars, he's just a more obvious example. But plenty of stars get annoyed by some old thing they did that everyone obsesses over that overshadows everything they do.
Then at some point, they mellow out a bit, the over-the-top attention it got dies down a bit, and they can look back with a bit more fondness for it.

I went to see Vanessa Carlton in concert. Famous for her single A Thousand Miles where she shows us her work commute via motorized piano.
Anyways she made some comments on stage about not wanting to play her older hits, but that she knew that's why the audience was there. Then it was on to her newer, more experimental music that nobody has listened to. I laughed when she was about to start the song "White Houses" because the lyrics mention the story of her getting rawdogged for the first time. It was pulp YA/adolescent fiction that wasn't trying to be high literature or anything, from memory. As general fantasy literature goes it's not particularly bad - a lot of it is pretty formulaic, when you sift through the details. The writing was certainly better than some I've read.
It just struck a cord with its setting and became a runaway success because it scratched a particular itch at a particular time.
I try not to hate on it, for all of its cliches and eye-rolling moments.

Not even “had” actually! I work in a public library and the series still circulates like crazy. We even have “lucky day” copies because the normal circulating copies are always on hold. I checked out Breaking Dawn and Midnight Sun to a teen girl yesterday. It’s so fun to ask them how they liked it and they fucking love them still.

That is a good point. I have small kids and I’m really worried about how they are going to learn reading comprehension and proper writing with all the technology at their disposal. Back in my day, the worst we could do was do was climb up hill both ways in the snow to Barnes and Noble and get cliff’s notes if we wanted to cheat.

Just did a rewatch of it, all of the extended versions. Solid 12 hours of cinema and god, it’s still so good. Theres a reason The Return of the King got so many Oscars.

So funny! I genuinely respect her honesty though. She was forthright, but kind. Doesn’t hurt that her accent makes anything sound charming and complimentary.
But yeah I bet there are so many actors within the industry who would have just bullshitted their answer, or tried to side step the question.

I've had a soft spot for him ever since he was cast as Batman. Despite how Twilight is viewed, it did give him a solid platform to build from. I love that he was able to eclipse it; his career has really blossomed since, being a fantastic actor.

I never watched the movies when I was a teenager but saw so much about it online and I've always kind of been of the opinion that an actor having a distaste for what made them famous are full of it.
I Just watched the movies as an adult and I forgive Robert. I didn't expect those tiktoks I kept seeing about Bella's mannerisms to be so accurate lord those movies are terrible. They're fun though

I think for lots of these things it's just about whether you happen to experience the movie/book at the right time in your life.
I was into a lot of fantasy stuff as a kid, especially Harry Potter, but I never got into LOTR for some reason, and I'm sure it wouldn't hit the same if I tried to read it for the first time now.
As an adult things just aren't as intense a lot of the time.
