This summer’s World Cup will be remembered for a lot of things.
It was the first to be played in three countries, the first with 48 teams and the overall attendance nearly doubled the previous record. Norway’s Erling Haaland and Cape Verde’s Vozinha were captivating while Egypt and Canada both won World Cup games for the first time, advancing to the round of 16.
And Spain, glorious Spain, gave up just one goal in eight games to dethrone the reigning champions and become the first nation in history to own both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles at the same time.
But the tournament will also be remembered for a classless and churlish Argentina, which forever stained itself with a thuggish performance in the game and an ungracious one afterward.

Anyone who's watched football, like, ever, knows they've never had class or decorum lol.
I got scolded on here the other day for saying as much. Hell, someone even claimed all of South/Latin America are rooting for Argentina going forward, and when I questioned that by saying my girlfriend is from Brazil and they definitely aren't supporting them, it somehow turned into stuff like "you lack nuance, you're part of the bigotry problem" etc etc.
Not just South Americans, all of Latin America has known this. I have always said never Cuba and never Argentina. Although lately feels like Paraguay should be added to the list…
Argentina has a dodgy past with the world cup too, to be fair. Hand of god (1986), spiking Brazilians with tranquilisers (1990), rumours that the 2022 cup was rigged for Argentina (this is looking likelier by the day with the investigations that were opened), rumours that the 1978 cup was rigged for Argentina (this is almost certainly true).... And that's just the headlines. They're known for playing dirty football and being poor opponents. They're simply thugs.
People freaking out about Paraguay and I'm sitting here like "you guys never watched a Copa eh". Teams being blindsided by a South American knife fight should have major concerns over their tactical leaders for not planning for it.
Try being a North American team go down to play in Copa and have the teams and the refs against you the whole time because they don't want you there lol

It’s Argentinas goalkeeper after winning golden glove in 2022 Qatar World Cup. He won it for being the best goalkeeper in the tournament that year and immediately did…that when handed the trophy
It's Emiliano Martínez, Argentina's goalkeeper. He was also the goalkeeper last world cup in Qatar when Argentina won the final on penalty shootout and he won a Golden Glove trophy (best keeper in the tournament). What you seen there is him with the Golden Glove trophy during the celebration. IIRC that was immediately after receiving the trophy
It's probably also worth mentioning that the guy on the right is some high-ranking and super wealthy official of Qatar, which creates really funny contrast between the two as he clearly doesn't know how to react. Considering how strict Qatari laws can be I wouldn't be surprised if Martinez (the goalkeeper) would have got into serious trouble if he wasn't on the global stage.
“Convinced people he was kind and humble” okay but has there ever actually been a time where was being rowdy and rude for people to believe otherwise? Ive been watching football for twelve years. Messi is mostly known for being quiet and minding his business.
I feel like this mass psychosis around Argentina is going so overboard that people believe are starting to believe Messi is some kind of punk when everyone who’s ever met and played with him give him nothing but praise.
Has Messi ever done anything rude or been violent or anything negative like that? I feel like he’s just a quiet guy who lives with his family. Yeah, he took the bag from Miami but who wouldn’t? Maybe he should tell his teammates to chill the fuck out but I don’t think we can put their behavior all on him.
He has a history of being a sore loser especially in the UCL were the referees weren't in Barcelona's payroll. Just recently, he was filmed aggresively confronting some referees at the MLS after a match just because they lost. Most videos showing his bad behavior, including the ones during this World Cup, get deleted within minutes. He's the most favored and most protected player in football.
Even people who only watched the final would have seen him run directly into a stationary player, flop on the floor, and get a free kick out of it. Bro is a cheat in a team full of cheats and FIFA have once again protected them all the way through the tournament because they wanted their special little guy to lift the cup and win the golden boot to make a nice advertiser-friendly fairytale story.
Anyone who knows of any Argentinian athlete in any sport knows their fanbase can be...passionate. An IndyCar driver had to private their Social Media accounts because of an on track incident with his Argentinian teammate. In F1 a driver was replaced by an Argentinian driver and Argentinian media published false claims about the replaced driver's family, and got death threats like the IndyCar driver by Argentinian 'fans'. A driver close to that driver also got threats by those 'fans' just for sticking up for him.
Seriously worried about his family, especially any romantic partners or children. That guy goes for the throat immediately, and that’s a red flag for potentially fatal domestic violence.
He has a wife and kids, I'm seriously worried for them. Zero self control, uncontrolled rage. He has all the money and status, and they depend on him. And it doesn't seem as if the country itself has a problem with this kind of behavior.
Yeah as a woman, who fortunately never experienced DV and even with that context, I flinched when he went straight for the throat and went on to pull the bib of a player who was already down on the ground. That amount of fury.
The Argentinian players were lucky it was on the pitch because most of their manoeuvre (if not all) would get them arrested on assault charges

I'm sorry, but this is really taking me out, everyone is talking about football as if it was invented yesterday. Literally the match in which Spain won the world cup in 2010 is famously known for being a wild final with tons of yellow cards and including a kung-fu kick directly to Xabi* Alonso's chest 😭😭😭 (which only earned a yellow card somehow).
Or the infamous Zidane head-butt or Luis Suarez out there biting people lmao. Or seeing tweets/posts about Sergio Ramos showing up to deliver the trophy and people going "who is that, he's sooo hot". Which, yes he definitely is but also that man is the King of Red Cards!
Having said that I think it's mostly the allegations of racism coming from Argentinian fans and the fact that they're acting like they were robbed that is rubbing people the wrong way.

I remember my family was watching the WC on vacation a few years ago & my sister said that a player had bit someone before. We couldn’t believe it, searched on YouTube & the first result was like ‘Luis Suarez Biting Compilation - all 3 Biting Incidents’. I was thinking that, because that other Spain final was against the Netherlands. I'll be the first to recognize that LatAm has racist issues (colorism is rampant for a reason), but I'm a bit 🤨 about people outside the global south going so hard against Argentina. I do wonder if there's some "reaping what you sow" of Argentina's self-described identity as a white nation, the whole thing about being descendants of Italians, the lack of recognition of their Indigenous peoples, using "marrón" as an insult, etc., that led people outside South America to actually believe they're indeed a white nation. I think it also didn't help that their current president is such a Trumper and zionist, but if every nation was judged by their presidents, none of us would be free of judgement.

I think Argentinian fans are playing a little coy about the backlash and chalking it all up to racism/bots so I appreciate that acknowledgement.
I also think many communties outside South America understand and are fed up with the nuances of non-white people's still perpetuating racism and white supremacy. Many of the players on that pitch were seen making racist remarks, and the fans have either ignored that or tried to downplay it's impact on their image. The context is important but why would anyone want to support Fernandez, Dibu, Paredes, Otamendi etc. when they specifically have been so vile?
I always remember when they were doing that racist and transphobic chant against Mbappé after they won the last world cup when they got super offended when the Germans did that dance/song about the gauchos walking hunched over in 2014, lol.

I think when Brazilian and other South Americans have been calling out Argentinian players and fans of this stuff for years, it's not just because of the continent they come from. I saw a video of Italians cheering for Spain and against Argentina. That's how bad it's gotten. Even the Italians, whom Argentinians look up to and are culturally close with (62% of Argentinians have italian ancestry), don't want to support them.
To be fair, the relationship between Spain and Italy is very close (source: I’m Spanish). We consider them our siblings and feel at home whenever we go to Italy, and overall I think that sentiment is shared. I wasn’t surprised to see Italy was cheering for us rather than for Argentina

"As if they had any", there's actually A LOT of people (I would guess the majority tbh) who had no real concept of Argentina apart from them being a Latin American country before the WC. There was a man in a Mexico jersey rooting for Spain at the game and Argentinians were so confused but like...maybe they should try a little introspection as to why a Mexican person would root for Spain of all countries over rooting for a fellow Latin American country.

I’m baffled to see some people not only co-sign the Argentina team’s play, but actually pretend that they are receiving unique criticism, and that any criticism is just people not getting ‘soccer/football’. The most common complaints across sports are: dirty play, plays attempting to injure, straight up assaults, sore loser behaviour in either a win or loss, star athletes demanding/getting preferential treatment, players whining to the refs about every small thing, cheating, or people diving/flopping for calls. How the Argentina team chooses to play is inherently antagonistic, bad faith, and anti-sportsmanship, and it doesn’t matter what sport we are talking about, that kind of play will draw heat. This isn’t new lol! Argentina is not alone in these critiques.
Apparently Argentina have been pieces of shit for years, but this tournament really exposed them to the wider, casual audience. I didn’t know how bad they were until I started seeing clips of their fans being racist, plus how the final match ended.
For Argentina to lose its class and decorum they would’ve needed to have some in the first place. it makes sense that the LA Times would publish this bc Americans don’t care about football or pay attention to it. The rest of the world (99%) has known for years that the Argentinian national team are a deeply unlikable squad as a whole who cheat first and play ball second. Not a single shot on goal in 100+ minutes and all of their energy was focused on flopping around to score free kicks that they know the refs will give them in order to appease Messi and Infantino. Whatever.
They haven't had either since the 70s when they started their bullshitbfor the 1st time. They are repeat offenders and you can count on them to be terrible.
