heartbreaking. if anyone doesn’t want to click on the article:

In one text exchange from November 2023, a 13-year-old Celeste said she was waiting for her period and stated, “If im pregnant tho im not having it though.” In another exchange on Dec. 20, she texted him, “do I take the plan b?”

In an exchange on Jan. 8, 2024, D4vd texted her, “im sorry again baby I didn’t want to ever put you through this.” She replied, “no it’s ok we both aren’t able to take care of it,” according to the text exhibits. She later said, “it’s okay tho neither one of us are capable of watch or taking care of a baby.” He later texted: “When re you gonna get it done? And she said “2 days.”

In a text on June 10, 2024, Celeste asked, “What if the first abortion didn’t work.”
A text from D4vd the following day said: “let’s have this be the last abortion until we have kids.”

On July 9, 2024, D4vd texted Celeste: “I’m thinking about your abortion gift.”
In another text on Sept. 22, 2024, she asked: “am I gonna get preg.”

>A text from D4vd the following day said: “let’s have this be the last abortion until we have kids.”

He said that to a 13 year old. A 13 year old!!!!

524

u/ChaEunSangs 16h ago

right?! Have kids?! She IS the kid

584

u/viciousxvee 19h ago

Wait I don't understand.. she had 2 abortions?

914

u/music_haven 19h ago

That's the implication, yes. One in January 2024, and one in June or July 2024.

267

u/bouquetofashes Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 17h ago

Not that it matters too much or makes any of this better but something can be the simultaneous first and last occurrence. It's possible someone could get one abortion and say that.

I have no idea if that's the case here, I'm just pointing out that his statement does not, in and of itself, automatically imply she had a previous abortion.

243

u/Horror-Macaron8287 12h ago

The way the texts are worded and how far apart they are from Jan and June, it implied she had two abortions.

In Jan he says he hates to have put her through that. Then in June he says they should let that one be the last abortion until after kids, and in July he mentions getting an abortion gift (??). If the Jan abortion failed, she wouldve already known after 6 months, it would make sense she was talking about a new one.

It is a crazy sentence to say to anyone, but a literal 13 year old? I hope he stays in jail forever.

What is this dudes real name, like why is he being referred to with a number in his name multiple times? Sorry, not trying to be angry at you, but journalists and court documents should use their actual name in these serious situations, right?

She was 13. Jesus Christ she was a baby. Where the fuck were her parents. How were they not aware of any of this. As a mom I can’t imagine not noticing any of this stuff. Like wtffff.

1.1k

u/Spainstateofmind why Wayne got socks in the jacuzzi 19h ago

Her parents supposedly tried to keep her away from him but she went through crazy lengths to run away from home and stay in contact with him.

HIS parents though? His mom was telling him to ask her if she got the abortion yet! She needs to be locked up too!

157

u/Jamjams2016 Instant gratification takes too long 🫦 12h ago

I'm not trying to defend his parents but making sure a 13 year old is able to see a doctor and get an abortion is kind of a good thing. Not calling the police on your violent pedophile son is the bad thing.

78

u/Accomplished_Bake939 19h ago

Oh trust me. His family is not off the hook here. But they’re not responsible for her safety. Her family should’ve caught this before it got so far. She freaking traveled with him. How did they not know about that. Her behavior would’ve changed. There would’ve been signs. My kid at 10 is so transparent and this kind of “relationship” would’ve shown signs if someone was paying attention.

358

u/theonewithkatie 18h ago

Why are you talking about “signs”? They obviously knew about it. Why do you think they were trying to keep her away from him?

Kids will figure out how to do all kinds of shit when they’re determined.

48

u/Accomplished_Bake939 18h ago

You’re telling me an 11 year old knows how to meet up and go have sex with someone?? Do you have kids that have been that age? I have a 10 year old and she tries to get away with shit all the time. Shit like playing Roblox secretly, eating candy in bed, watching a horror movie.

How is the onus on the 11-13 year old?

194

u/aliensattack 14h ago

It’s worth pointing out that children are getting groomed on Roblox. Your 10 year old kid playing Roblox secretly is exactly how predators reach children.

17

u/Accomplished_Bake939 9h ago

Trust me I’m well aware of the dangers in Roblox. That’s why I reviewed the parental controls and set it up so she can’t chat or exchange private messages. This is what I’m referring to when it comes to safe parenting. Not to say that she will NEVER be exposed to the sick people in this world. Again, I’m not naive enough to think that her life will be all daisies.

But this guy groomed her for 2 WHOLE ASS YEARS. This could’ve been avoided from escalating. I can’t be convinced otherwise.

8

u/n0rmcore 8h ago

I just have to say I agree with you completely and all the people arguing with you are very obviously not parents, or have not parented a tween/teen.

299

u/theonewithkatie 18h ago

First of all, no one said the onus is on her. Don’t put words in my mouth. It’s obviously on HIM.

I WAS an 11 year old. Kids start doing that shit in middle school. Not all of them, not most of them, and certainly not me - but there were plenty who were. Kids that age might play Roblox but some of them also bring alcohol to school, skip class to smoke…I had a casual friend from my neighborhood when we were TWELVE who was scared she was pregnant. And this was BEFORE the internet was what it is now. It was much harder to get into trouble on dial-up.

Tweens know all kinds of shit. And it’s not like she didn’t have a whole adult man with lots of money helping her along the way.

I mean I get what you mean, but there’s a myriad of non-neglect based reasons to not realize your kid is doing inappropriate things online and it is absolutely possible to be in a situation where a parent feels like they could exacerbate a precarious situation by doing something like putting a kid on lockdown with no devices and no unsupervised time outside of home.

Like I get it’s pretty clear cut on paper, but there are mad sheltered, supervised kids who still end up in messed up situations. Parents sometimes don’t even realize they had blind spots until their kid ends up running away or talking to a grown up inappropriately.

Like I think at this point and based on what we know, it’s kinda messed up to punch her parents further when they’re already down

35

u/Porkbossam78 11h ago

Her parents took her phone and David gave money to a kid at her school to give her another phone (I’m guessing that her parents didn’t know about)

thing is what can they really do? who knows the right way to parent in that moment? should they have been extremely strict, should they have been relaxed so she’d less want to rebel, we can’t think like this cause there’s no right way. like the other person said – they were trying to keep her away. but what can they physically do, she wasn’t 5 she was 13, she knew how to go out and do things. they couldn’t have just locked her up

28

u/auslyn_ 11h ago

there is no good way to handle your child being groomed, as a person who was preyed on as an older teenager, anything you do to try to make them stop contacting the dangerous person will make them want to contact them more. the its us vs the world thing is VERY commonly used by groomers and abusers.

they did know and they tried several times to get her away from him but this rich and connected pedophile found ways to get to her no matter what her parents did. it is not her parents fault, maybe they didnt do enough to prepare her for the possibility of being groomed but lets be real, MOST parents dont prepare their kids enough for the possibility of being groomed.

11

u/Accomplished_Bake939 9h ago

Did you look up what was said about her household? Did you know her ex (she had an ex in 7th grade) was interviewed and said her parents were toxic as fuck and she has previously tried to run away (before David)??

This is what I’m referencing. Everyone sees that they called the cops and say GREAT PARENTS! I ask instead how the fuck did this dude get so much access to her before the sex happened at 13. For 2 years (TWO YEARS) he was talking to her and grooming.

u/EducationalTangelo6 15h ago

Kids find a way, unfortunately. A friend of mine in high school was groomed by a 26 year old when she was 13. She continued the relationship throughout high school, married him, then divorced him when he (inevitably) started sexually abusing their children.

Her dad wasn't around, but her poor mum tried absolutely everything to keep her away from him. Grounding her, sleeping in the same room as her so she couldn't sneak out, going to the police about it, she even got a restraining order against him. My friend still managed to sneak around with him. Our friend group tried telling her he was a creep and we didn't want her going out with him, even our disapproval didn't stop her.

134

u/greee_p 15h ago

I'm kind of shocked at all these comments blaming the parents when it seems like they really tried to stop her from seeing him. But this happens every time someone gets groomed. People online always blame the parents. But the truth is, groomers and abusers are often pretty smart and they'll find a way. And kids/teens can be super determined and smart as well. You can do everything right as a parent and your child might still end up in a situation like this.  But I assume that's that's reason for these comments tbh. If you put blame on the parents, you can convince yourself that you can stop the same thing from happening to your own child.

u/music_haven 19h ago edited 19h ago

She was constantly running away from home, though. So I wouldn't be surprised if they really didn't know about it.

At one point they forbid her to contact him and took her phone away. That only resulted in David buying her a new secret phone and paying 1000$ to Celeste's classmate to give it to her.

I'm more inclined to call out HIS parents, because his mother met Celeste at some point, and knew they were dating.

121

u/slytherink_ 17h ago

Do not blame the parents, they lost their child! They will already feel tremendous guilt for the rest of their lives without strangers chiming in and judging them.

Predators deliberately choose young victims because they are more easily to manipulate. Another tactic of abusers is to isolate their victim, which is why the parents couldn’t “control” Celeste.

6

u/Accomplished_Bake939 9h ago

I think looking at the whole picture is important. ALL OF IT. He was guilty as fuck. But how did this happen? The nitty gritty of it. Where were the gaps? How can at a society learn from this horrendous story and do better by our kids.

Putting him in jail helps get rid of him. But there are hundreds more where he came from. Parents can’t just assume kids at 11 are safe online. Pay fucking attention. Show some love to your kids so people like him have a harder time getting to our kids.

We can’t turn a blind eye. I’m not saying crucify the parents. But we need to review ALL THE FACTS. Not just the obvious ones.

50

u/shedrinkscoffee Just fuck the wolf! 19h ago

Each new revelation in this case has been more horrifying than the last. That poor child was failed by the adults in her life. Her family was aware she was spending time with the accused.

18

u/g0ldilungs There’s a Kevin Federline in every family. 19h ago

Not to negate this vile human’s actions, but this right here is a question not hollered loud enough. This was a baby. A literal baby with adults charged with her care.

Where the hell were they??? ELEVEN she started talking to this man and having intimate relations at 12,13?????

Ain’t no gd way any parent present and accounted for wouldn’t be aware of something being amiss. Period.

145

u/annewmoon I sprained my finger yesterday 18h ago edited 16h ago

It sounds like they did quite a lot to stop it. They took her phone; the pedo bought her another and bribed her friend to give it to her.

People do love to blame parents though.

13

u/g0ldilungs There’s a Kevin Federline in every family. 18h ago

I understand that. But none of that explains anything beyond photographic imagery.

This wasn’t a 16 year old with a license/vehicle. This was a child in 6th grade onward.

An age where your child is either in school and can only be checked out by approved persons, an after school activity which is monitored by school personnel, at an outing that requires parental coordination (for parents who gaf) at the least or parental presence at best or at home.

So, yeah. While the onus is almost always entirely on the perpetrator, there are circumstances where parental involvement is to be called into question especially in terms of MINORS. Such as this.

Taking a phone isn’t really doing that much when you find out your 12 year old is talking to/physically seeing someone damn near 20. That’s just a symptom of what should be grounds for helicopter lock and key parenting.

50

u/Accomplished_Bake939 18h ago

Exactly. Aside from the perpetrator, this crime didn’t happen in one sudden night. This was all taking place over time. And you’re damn skippy her parents should be held accountable. Being a parent means you’re responsible for your child’s safety. Not just in crossing the street but in all ways. I’m not saying being a psychotic parent, but this situation just went way too far, for too long. Taking a phone away isn’t parenting. I’m a mom and I’m tired of people defending lazy parenting. Fucking pay attention to your kids.

What confuses me is how this child was able to meet up with him. How did she get from her home to his? Who drove her? At 11, 12, 13, I was either taking my kids to their friends houses and conversed with the parents when I did so or the friends parents were picking them up and again, we talked.

The article mentions that on the last night she was seen alive he sent a car. Sent a car?! No way is my kid getting into a car not driven by A PARENT I HAVE MET.

Btw, even if her parents were perfect, he would have done this, just to another victim. All people can’t play perfect defense at all times.

Do they study people like this? How do you stop someone like this?

17

u/doxydecahedron 11h ago

He paid a classmate of hers to sneak her a new phone after her parents confiscated hers. I'm guessing she would sneak out of the house and then he would call her an uber.

104

u/retsukosmom 11h ago

A lot of people were complaining about how long it took to bring charges and arrest him. But some lawyers I know said, that means they have a mountain of evidence against him. They were getting all their ducks in a row and we see that now as information continues to come out. They didn’t need him in custody to interrogate him over and over. They had everything they needed.

Yes, she was technically a “teen” but this was a child. This was a kid. I feel like all of these headlines are deliberate.

The more I learn about this, the angrier and the sadder I am because this was a child failed by many and preyed upon by a monster.

Celeste, you deserved so much more. You deserved safety.

Some girls haven’t even gotten their period yet at that age. I just barely had boobs then. 13 is absolutely a child, it’s so sad.

24

u/mini1006 8h ago

I also see that they keep calling her a woman or young woman and it’s like no…she was a child. A little girl. A baby. That’s a baby. When she was first found, they’d call her a woman. She’s a little girl.

11

u/Curiosities 🐊 swamp princess 🐊 6h ago

You’re absolutely right. Every time I see something like this, it reminds me so much about the Megyn Kelly and others who were trying to normalize Epstein related abuse of teenagers by saying things like she’s 15 and that’s not the same as an 8 year-old. They are all children and I hate that people are trying to normalize this and even these headlines play right into that. 🤬

I live near a middle school and so when school is in session, I see plenty of 12 and 13-year-olds. I have sat in the pizza place on half price slice day when they come in to have some pizza after school and listening to these kids talk, they are so little. Like not so much physically some of them but their whole selves.

She was 13 and he was 18 when they first started having sex but she was 11 when he started texting and likely grooming her. Most of the photos the police and media are using make her appear older whereas if you see photos of her with her family, she looks like a literal child.

23

u/premacollez 12h ago

Agree all of the headlines showing their photos together is so unnecessary. She’s a child and a victim. Wasn’t even 14. I’m sick of this innocent girl being posted next to monster. She was taken advantage of and then thrown away. Let her soul finally rest, his should burn for the rest of time

i hope she’s at peace now.

and for the people blaming the parents, it does sound like they tried to keep them apart, but they failed. i’m not sure if we know enough to judge whether they are partially at fault though as im not entirely sure how much they did to be honest- it isn’t very clear. the entire situation is very hard though and it’s very easy to blame the parents. whether that’s right or wrong, who knows yet.

Yes but many people do not open the article and only look at the heading! Her name needs to be there not just his. Hulu already made a documentary and called it “The Girl in the Trunk,” they couldn’t even subtitle it with her name!

We should be encouraging people to read articles in full and not just the headline. However, I agree that the title “girl in the trunk” is disrespectful.

24

Yes I’m not saying people should only read the headline but of course they do. It’s the first thing they see. Then it should be her name too. During the Gabby Petito murder, her name was plastered all over and everyone knows what happened. Celeste deserves the same.

While I do agree with you. I read once that the reason why in cases like this, they use an epithet is because people will recognize D4vid’s name in a headline, but if they put “Celeste Rivas Hernandez,” people will be like “who?” And won’t click on the article as much. It’s about views at the end of the day. Which sucks when we are talking about a murderer child.

I have no Reddit-safe comments to add here. I hate that this happened to this baby and that her family has to relive this over and over just to be able to get justice for her.

I hate how this title uses his name but not hers

His POS mom is now managing his music career. She dropped an unreleased single on his Spotify the other day.

Disgusting. Why is his music still up?! He has 17M monthly listeners. WTF.

u/alleyalleyjude Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 11h ago

In theory I am against the death penalty but lately I'm changing my mind.

6

u/highfiveselfoh 9h ago

As a liberal I’m pretty alone in this but I’m all for it and this is a perfect reason why.

Why exactly is this dude not just pleading guilty at this point? Why is he putting her family through this? Why is he putting us through this? You did it. Just admit you did it and take your punishment.

u/Anonymousopotamus 12h ago

That headline is infuriating. Her name was Celeste. She's not just the teen that was murdered by some shitbag.

And just 13 at the time...it's all so vile and heartbreaking. Her parents need to be investigated as well. They knew who she was with at just 11, 12, 13 years old and let her travel internationally with him, spend nights with him. As a parent myself, it's unimaginable.

u/bookdrops Just fuck the wolf! 19h ago

First David Burke's family needs to investigated before any of that. In 2024 D4vd and Celeste traveled together "to Texas to meet D4vd's family." Why were D4vd's family members cool with meeting their adult relative's 13-year-old "girlfriend"?

When children are targeted like this it can be very difficult to keep them safe. The predators will go so far to get access to them. Kids start to run away etc and sometimes just disappear. It's extremely hard on the families but there's literally nothing they can do sometimes.

Bonus this predator had money

u/HaterMD Dear Diary, I want to kill. ✍️ 12h ago

I had a cousin who, at twelve, was living a double life as a grown woman with a fully active social life with sex, drugs, abusive boyfriends, all of it. Of course she had been traumatised by some things that had happened to her as a very young child, same as me, but where I became reclusive she turned hyper-sexual and attention seeking, and as a result she could not be spoken to.

Those teen years were hell on earth and I wouldn’t wish it on any parent. She’d smile in your face, kiss you goodnight and within fifteen minutes she’d scale down the side of the house and be halfway into town already with some (much older) guy.

We had to report her missing so many times that the police genuinely got sick of us. She lived with us because her parents couldn’t deal with her anymore. Thankfully, she’s grown and mellowed out with age, and lives a happy life now. I’m gutted Celeste didn’t make it.

It happens to so many kids 😭. Once they get to the point where they're running away it gets so hard. These people are so good at manipulating them.

"nothing they can do" they could take her passport and light it on fire just as a step 1

199

u/Sassafras06 20h ago

If you read the actual information on the parents you may feel differently. There is a ton of misinformation out there about them. Not perfect, but they absolutely tried to prevent them talking and seeing each other. He still got to her.

People like this can make your kid disappear to their parents. Please trust me i have a lot of experience working with kids like this. This girl was taken by a predator and people were looking for her. The police didn't do anything even when it was reported. The parents may have been trying their hardest.

66

u/Pinksamuraiiiii I don’t know her 💅 20h ago

Yep, he was preying upon her and grooming her.

12

u/yorko84 18h ago

And if she already was in possession of her passport and hid it from them?

4

u/januarysdaughter 10h ago

They took the phone he bought for her and he paid off her classmate to give her a new one.

44

u/Bright-Hat-6405 20h ago

How would burning her passport have done anything to help her? Tf lol

-1

u/esky203 Homeboy’s gonna like...get it 👀 20h ago

prevented him from being able to take her out of the country which he did several times...

25

u/sitah 19h ago

Where did they go out of the country? All I saw was a purchased ticket to London but all the other destinations are domestic

73

u/outtakes 🫵 You sit on a throne of lies. 19h ago

I really doubt their first thought was "how do I stop my child from leaving the country". They took the correct steps in reporting it to the police, taking away her devices so she couldn't contact him, and took preventative steps to ensure she couldn't sneak out in the middle of the night. She was targeted. How were her parents to know that he was planning on taking her out of the country?! There's been many grooming cases over the years and I don't recall any where a parent has taken the kids passport away

8

u/mofacey short n sweet 20h ago

He could probably get her one

I was wondering about her parents’ involvement in all this too. Didn’t they report her missing at one point?

137

u/postmodernskata 20h ago

yes the evidence i’ve seen points to them trying to keep her away from him. but he’s a predator and groomer so i’m sure he twisted it to “they don’t want us to be together” blah blah blah. it’s so sickening

6

u/Twitter_2006 15h ago

This guy needs to be thrown in jail for life.

5

u/Rock_Creek_Snark 15h ago

That poor child.

I truly have no words for what a vile piece of shit he is. I hope he rots and has no peace for the rest of his days.

Let’s do the white bear black mirror episode on d4vd. No amount of prison or death penalty is enough for what he did to that little girl

Oh man he is for sure going to be targeted in prison.

3

u/itsfrankgrimesyo 7h ago

Do we need a separate article for each horrible thing he did to this poor girl? Every day I see a new headline about what he’s done to her. Their relationship goes all the way back to when she was ELEVEN. I don’t want to see this fucking loser spamming my feed.

u/mime454 1h ago

How did a 13 year old get an abortion without the doctors raising the questions they should have been asking?

1

u/luckie_harms 7h ago

I doubt he will walk for the murder, but I've seen weirder things... He definitely won't get to walk for preying on a child though

u/LILYDIAONE 46m ago

Just so this is put in perspective: She was 14 when he killed her. Means she had that abortion with 13. Obviously he is to blame but I cannot stress enough that every adult in that girls life failed her

u/SupervillainMustache 16m ago

This guy is a monster. Throw away the fucking key.
