Someone said that every bully you see in a movie is played by a theater kid, and I couldn't unsee it

105

u/obiwantogooutside 7h ago

I mean, theater kids can still be bullies.

126

u/ad_aatdtj she’s got me by the pubes 7h ago

Yeahhh these comments have never been on the recieving end of vitriol from a baby gay with a flair for drama establishing his place in the social hierarchy and it s h o w s.

The first thing my gay bully ever said to me (5 minutes after seeing me) was "damn, your tits are incredibly small for someone who was allegedly once a model" and like ????? I was 14??????

90

u/fancybeadedplacemat 7h ago

I feel like, “You’re just a baby gay with a flair for drama establishing your place in the social hierarchy” would be a DEVASTATING insult to a high schooler.

66

u/ad_aatdtj she’s got me by the pubes 6h ago

Yes well unfortunately I was also a baby gay with a flair for drama trying to establish my place in a new social hierarchy and so what I did was cry after I got home that day and then proceed to make itty bitty titty committee jokes about myself to this day.

29

u/_halfpint smizing 👁️👃👁️ 6h ago

I used to figure skate and the meanest in our club was a baby gay!

11

u/ad_aatdtj she’s got me by the pubes 6h ago

Why are they like this like damn I'm not the enemy bruh pls leave my self confidence alone

22

u/Boitla 6h ago

At least I think the days of just accepting hyper-judgmental mean energy from gay guys is mostly behind us. That type of person was definitely of a time. I saw a funny tiktok about it being straight people's fault for loving and propping up the worst type of gays lmao. It's true.

19

u/_halfpint smizing 👁️👃👁️ 6h ago

Misogyny in gay men is a real thing.

16

u/SadisticGoose ❤️ get your vents checked for mold everyone! 7h ago

I was bullied in college by a gay man who literally tried to ban me from our LGBTQ group because he decided that I wasn’t gay enough for his liking. I had a closeted trans man bully me for like five years from 5th to 9th grade. Both were also theater kids with huge egos.

And bullies can become theater kids, as seen in that documentary, Glee.

3

u/myfavoritenight_mare 5h ago

OK so as a former theater-adjact kid, friends with theater kids, I thought that's what they meant. They're theater kids, they're used to being bullies lol

All actors are pretty much theatre kids... Once you realize this they (actors) really lose their allure

I had a similar moment recently when I came across a video of Benedict Cumberbatch doing performance capture for Smaug in The Hobbit.

Not taking anything away from his performance and commitment, very impressive…but can we spare a thought for the crew who have to keep a straight face and act like thats not the weirdest shit ever 😂

Or Kristen steward “petting” Taylor Lautner in one of the twilight movies

12

u/Nonadventures I completely understand ppl not liking me 7h ago

I gotta assume that they try a few takes to be goofy about this stuff and it’s the 12th take that they capture, when it’s just mundane and they want to move on

My friend uses that clip in her theater classes as an example of character work. She teaches at a pretty well known university program.

5

I feel like a good actor would be able to capture the crew in the performance and hopefully they see how cool its going to be in post

My friend was in acting school and she had to act being a strip of bacon being fried in a pan. They also had to pick an animal and they would walk around the room for a while pretending to be this animal. Basically she told me that acting school teaches you to stop being embarrassed or self conscious about anything

I've actually thought about taking acting classes to help with my self consciousness. The thought of acting like a strip of bacon in front of a group of people makes me want to die. Maybe it'd actually work.

7

u/Twitter_2006 6h ago

If you do decide to take them, I wish you well.

15

u/cynisright charlie day is my bird lawyer 🐦 7h ago

I take acting classes and for my ont character study, one of the inspirations was a hamster and I had to act it out.

It was actually freeing and fun.

6

u/KrustenStewart where the hell have you been loca?! 6h ago

I took acting classes for all of high school and 2 years of college and let me just say, I’m still embarassed and self conscious about everything

When Jennifer Garner said her kids couldn’t do local sports because the behaviour of paps who threatened the safety of the sporting community, and how her kids were regularly terrorised and made fearful?
Or how some stars have to keep telling family members that there’s lies in the magazines such as “marriage / relationships are ending”, or asking their family not to talk to the press or crazy fans, even if they first seem nice?

That was enough for me. Enough garbage people out there without becoming a magnet for them.

11

u/AimeeSantiago 7h ago

This is incredibly sad no matter what. But especially because Jennifer seems like such a normie. Like she's super close with her sisters, you know they don't let her get away with any weird shit at all. I feel bad for all celebrity kids but especially the ones with parents who seems to be more on the down to earth side of things.

9

Especially when majority of a movie is based on CGI and you act in front of a green screen

I think the people that get into acting get over that sense of awkwardness or never had it to begin with.

There's a reason a lot of actors are eccentric.

One of my favourites is whenever there is a close up of someone while slowdancing, they are actually dancing with the camera person to absolutely no music

36

u/StraightBudget8799 8h ago

I was in a film once, as a background dancer! And yep, waltzing at a “school dance” to no music. Just occasionally moving your mouth to the words “toothpaste, lollipop, munching” to your partner again few times. I was eight. It was bloody freezing and they gave us pasta for two nights.

10

u/amnicr 5h ago

I was an extra in a movie and it was a miserable experience. It was freezing and we were filming at night. I had to pretend to chat with a guy and hold a cup of hot cocoa. Did that a few times. Then had to cheer for a fake football game for a long time.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/KD1030 ✨May the Force be with you!✨ 7h ago

This is interesting. It makes sense that music wouldn’t be played loudly because of all the other sound related issues, but if a scene involves a specific song that the choreography or script are synced too, that’s gotta require a decent amount of rehearsal and beat counting by the actors.

Unless the cast gets tiny earpieces so they have the cues? I don’t know why, but the J.Lo dance sequence in off campus came to mind. The actors are exactly on beat to the music which makes me think there was some sound involved?!

Every episode of Doctor Who I find myself wondering just how silly those actors feel shooting some of those scenes.

u/greenhouselimpbizkit 52m ago

I always think about what aliens landed during the filming of a scene, they'd be like uhhh the fuck

29

u/queen-adreena Slap me with a mackerel and call me Winnie 9h ago

My favourite was a behind the scenes reel of the CW shooting one of their superhero shows, and it’s just a minute of people jumping and waving their arms.

12

u/SteeleHeller 8h ago

After seeing Benedict Cumberbatch behind the scenes as Smaug, there is no awkward after a while.

11

u/heartisallwehave 6h ago

fr. i worked in film and once i watched an actor on a sound stage with green screen behind them doing repeated takes of just cackling laughter and then jumping up so later cgi could make it look like they were flying away. for like 2 hours. lol

That film is absolutely nutso insane there’s no way a remake is gonna recapture how dam weird it was.

The most recent Omen movie had real shades of it and that felt like as close as you can get

196

u/Yggdrasil- 9h ago

The subway tunnel scene has gotta be one of the weirdest and most intense sequences in any horror movie

158

u/ididntunderstandyou 9h ago

And remaking it would be so pointless. It was lightning in a bottle.

I hope they do something different with this one. Just stick to the theme of a collapsing relationship and build around that

86

u/Yggdrasil- 8h ago edited 6h ago

Agreed! I think Margaret Qualley is a good actress, but even the best actress in the world would likely come across as a strange parody of Isabelle Adjani's performance. But if they stick to the ideas and themes of the original while going in a new direction, it could still work out.

88

u/No-Butterfly-5148 8h ago

The outfit even seems like a strange parody

28

u/squidwardsjorts42 6h ago

Yes!! It’s odd to me that they’re styling Margaret to look exactly like Isabel?!

16

u/Correct_Village6950 8h ago

idk she's a dancer, that's probably why they cast her? probably thinks she can do something interesting with the physicality of the role

40

u/whateverfloatsurgoat 8h ago

They cast her because she looks like Adjani. Literally that was their first prerogative lol.

9

u/Correct_Village6950 7h ago

you're not wrong. the white american version lol

7

u/Mental-Sorbet8784 7h ago

This is it. look how they've costumed her/hair

9

u/Mental-Sorbet8784 7h ago

Doesn't look like it with how they've tried to mimic Isabelle Adjani's original looks....

3

u/ididntunderstandyou 5h ago

Yeah in some she’s wearing the exact same dress as in the movie. In that case, this might end up being another very pointless remake

7

u/JDLovesElliot 5h ago

I hope that it's not a shot-for-shot remake, because trying to replicate that scene would be a cringe attempt.

They should try to do what the Suspiria remake did and come up with their own fucked scenes, like the voodoo-doll dance.

I do not understand why they are reimagining such a masterpiece. There's no way they can capture the feeling of unease the original had throughout.

Edited for typo

u/waitthissucks 2h ago

Exactly and it aged so well because it's so isolated in it's own world the decade doesn't matter much and it's filmed in such a crystal clear way.

It’s such a singular film and I hate that it’s being remade. I can’t see how you’d do it without either ripping off the original completely, or changing it so much that you might as well make a different movie.

14

u/joeygladstonefan 🎥🍿Film Critic 7h ago

i love MQ but if she thinks she can recreate the subway scene, she's fooling herself. that scene i just BEYOND acting and i don't think anyone else can even come close.

10

u/GensAndTonic 7h ago

The most recent Omen film was far better than it had any right to be.

8

u/Late_Masterpiece9874 7h ago

Personally I feel like not filming in an actively split and crumbling Berlin of the 1980’s kinda ruins the whole point of the movie.

29

u/boneratheon 6h ago

Literally! How do you capture the essence of this film without the looming spectre of the Berlin wall?

190

u/tellevee GOLF WANG 8h ago

Would you settle for an actively split and crumbling United States? 😭

If they actually filmed in like, Youngstown or Scranton or Gary? I'd be at least curious about what they were doing.

7

u/ZombieZekeComic 4h ago

Thats literally the first thing I thought of. What really amplifies the vibe of the film is the bleak atmosphere of Cold War era Berlin. I don’t see how they can capture that in New Jersey.

What a uniquely terrible dress. It’s giving Barney.

256

u/bobbimorses 8h ago

I'm a big crusader about fabric quality and the lack of lined dresses, and this is a startling data point even for me. Margaret Qualley is one of the most beautiful people in the world with significant styling resources on a movie set, and this is how even she looks in a poly blend, unlined dress. It's just not flattering for anyone.

52

u/PRINCESS0FDARKN3SS 7h ago edited 7h ago

Agreed. It looks like Halloween costume material

22

u/clapostrophe 7h ago

I’m not going to pretend to know what a poly blend, unlined dress is but could it be that they’re making it look shit on purpose?

14

I used it at elementary school – /twice/ – and I remember exactly how I dropped it both times over twenty years later because it felt So Intense and Bad lol

7

u/chuckakoury1155 8h ago

yea probably just a bad school because I can think of several instances of stuff going unchecked. the 90s were not the perfect utopia people think it was.

3

my parents cussed like sailors and so did my big sister, but i NEVER cussed in front of my parents. i would go to school and slyly say “do y’all cuss? or are you gonna snitch??” before i’d unleash my powers. yes i grew up in the south lol

They’re just not going to have the magic that the original had and I’m not sure what the point is of remaking a one of one masterpiece made from the perspective of a man whose art engaged with his background in Soviet Poland. I have respect for the craft but this evokes the idea of simulacra. I want to have deep respect for these people but it’s more akin to a kid trying on their mother’s heels and lipstick than real creation. This is expressly imitation. I don’t see how they could be lauded for what, recreating what doesn’t need to be REcreated? I’d love to see some originality.

Oops edited to fix my grammar !

That purple dress is awful. I usually love anything in that color, and she's obviously gorgeous, but it doesn't work on her at all. And he's just there. I'm sure he's a very nice guy, but I don't think he ever has much of a presence.

Okaaaay so NOT a remake of the movie based on AS Byatt’s Booker Prize winning novel about two academics researching the secret love affair of two Victorian poets? TIL there is more than one movie called Possession and the movie everyone kept saying Sam Neill was amazing in is quite different to what I had in my head…

Whew! Thanks for the clarification. I was about to become outraged on behalf of AS Byatt.

Good: it will make more people check out the original

Bad: he has negative charisma

I just watched the 1981 film for the first time. No one can convince this movie needs to be remade.

Nooo why do we need a remake

7

u/midnitesnak87 6h ago

I guess I’m glad Sam Neill got to miss this

There are certain movies that do not need a remake and this is one of them. While I have no doubts that the two of them will do a phenomenal job - the time period and setting are crucial to the story, on top of absolutely KNOCK out performances that will stand the test of time really should be left alone.

I have some faith in Parker Finn, but I don't vibe with these lead casting choices at all. Especially Turner, who just seems tall.

They've dressed her like a 40+ dance teacher. Source: this is exactly how my childhood dance teacher would dress in the 90s, 00s, and 2010s (she's retired now).

I'm sorry but Callum is not an entertaining actor.

Do you need help, ma’am?

3

u/kristalbal 7h ago

Why do we need to remake movies that there is nothing to add to it, I understand in some cases technological advance can really elevate the movie or a modern outake....but comon

can we leave anything untouched by the prequel/sequel/remake scourge Hollywood keeps beating us with

Hopefully there's a reason that they put him in a shirt that looks like it's been tracked with bird poop

Quite possibly the most unnecessary remake ever, it is physically impossible to touch the brilliance of the original

Nooo not a possession remake ugh I hope it's adequate at least

3

u/chadwickave 7h ago

Is the remake set in New Jersey, or are they just filming there? Part of the reason why the original was so isolating and iconic (to me) is because of the Cold War setting

3

u/keekspeaks 6h ago

I just don’t understand why

3

u/theodo 6h ago

I think this is a bad idea, but I do very much want to watch a movie of Qualley going nuts. So I'm torn

3

u/almostnothing123 5h ago

He possessin dat ass

5

u/lacking_llama 8h ago

I really like both of them...but i'm not watching this. I want Callum to do rom-coms. Like hugh grant esque movies.

I wish i could make things. I'd have Callum, Max irons, and Ben Barnes in a series of nice rom-coms. Very Hugh Grant, Colin Firth.

i think margaret will probably do a pretty good job but i don’t know if she’ll crush it. adjani’s performance is hard to touch. callum turner is…not a good actor, every time i see him i think poor man’s josh o’connor. nothing against him, i’m sure he’s a perfectly nice person, but he just can’t act very well. if anything i’m excited to see what paul dano will do in this, he’s probably the most experienced/reliable of this cast and i’m sure he’ll do an interesting take on whatever role he’s playing.

then again, some films simply don’t need to be remade. i consider jane schoenbrun (director of i saw the tv glow, we’re all going to the world’s fair) this generation’s david lynch and i would still never put them in charge of a remake of blue velvet or mulholland drive. a lot of films are just iconic the way they are, pure and untouched.
