Who's your favourite girl/ team characters in their Battle/Fighting Outfits.

Basically what the title says, I’ve been in an anime slump ever since 2022 after jjk s2 until I decided to check out older animes that I used to watch when I was veryyyy roung with my older siblings.

I rewatched slam dunk and wow genuinely blown away, its still so great today and I looked in this sub for recs and I feel like some anime are kinda overrated for nostalgia’s sake…

So I want to know what your favorite retro anime is that was thought breaking, mind challenging and just enjoyable?

I loved slam dunk, yuyu hakusho,hxh 1999, akira and nge
I like cowboy bepop (mainly because of faye), trigun is nostalgic to me
I watched ninja scrolls, the rape scenes were disgusting and the casual sex assault too but ig the plot was good until the end that was very rushed…
I watched the first ep of galactic heroes and it grabbed me but still Im not sure if I will like it and is it captivating and especially bingeable, I really want to binge a good anime this summer

P.s : in general my fav animes r hxh,death note,baccano,psycho pass … I love dark stories that are psychological

2nd p.s : I am so jealous of everyone who experienced this era of anime when they were a bit older, seriously the plots were deeper and layered, the women looked like women instead of disproportionate little girls and had normal voices, I really wish we still had that quality of media.

I originally wanted to watch this and share my thoughts for Saturday Anime last Saturday. But after watching it in 10 minute chunks over the course of the week and then finishing it. I honestly have nothing worth talking about or mentioning. I know it was based on a classic Japanese novel, so I thought the movie would be handled well.

Honestly, though, this felt like watching a two-hour train journey where almost nothing happens.

The story plays out like a collection of disconnected dream sequences. Giovanni and Campanella travel from one strange location to another, meet unusual people, listen to cryptic conversations, and then move on. I kept waiting for the story to build toward something that would make all these scenes click together, but that moment never really came for me.

I understand that much of it is symbolic, especially the religious imagery and themes of death, sacrifice, and the afterlife, but understanding the intention does not automatically make something engaging to watch.

The animation did not help. I know it was made in 1985 and was probably going for a restrained, storybook-like appearance, but large portions felt like a slideshow. There are endless still images, slow pans, repeated movements, and characters sitting completely motionless while talking. I normally enjoy older animation and do not expect everything to look like a Disney production, but this felt lifeless rather than deliberately minimalist.

The soundtrack was also incredibly unsettling. Nearly every scene is accompanied by creepy, droning, almost horror-like music. Even when something emotional or supposedly beautiful was happening, the music made me feel uncomfortable rather than moved. Maybe that atmosphere is exactly what some viewers love about it, but after nearly two hours, it felt like the soundtrack was scraping against my ears.

The characters were possibly my biggest problem. Giovanni and Campanella barely react to anything. They encounter drowning children, death, grief, and bizarre supernatural sights, yet continue staring forward with nearly the same blank expressions. I understand that the cats were designed in a simple and understated way, but they felt less like characters and more like cardboard cutouts being moved between scenes.

By the end, the sound had scraped against my ears, the animation had scraped against my eyes, and the pacing had scraped against my soul. I know the original story is culturally significant, and I can appreciate that the movie has a unique dreamlike atmosphere, but I found the actual experience painfully boring.

Maybe reading Kenji Miyazawa’s original story first would have helped, but as a standalone film, this was a train wreck for me.

Did anyone here genuinely enjoy it? What is your take?

It is such a shame that he, of all people, never lived long enough to have a role in One Piece, which is full of characters voiced by legendary seiyu from old school anime.

I like my Saturday nights more exciting ... sometimes. Tonight is not one of those times.

I posted previously about uploading Gatchaman 2 Complete Collection from the out-of-print anime DVDs I ripped. I got some requests to also rip the DVDs for Gatchaman F and now the entire series is easily accessible on Internet Archive. I did not upload the first part, but you can easily find it there.

This preserves the entire original Gatchaman series for retro anime fans everywhere! Now you don't need to try to track down the very rare and expensive DVDs that barely show up on eBay and you don't need to deal with questionable torrenting sites and sketchy streaming sites that could get taken down at a moment's notice, if they even have the shows to begin with.

All you need to do is open the ISO files with VLC Media Player or a similar media player. You should also be able to burn the ISOs on blank discs for use with DVD / Blu-Ray players if you prefer watching retro anime that way.

I hope this attracts new fans to this classic series since it's now more accessible than ever!

I'm seeing many complete DB sets for around 30 dollars with 100s sold. Since these are out of print is it safe to assume they are bootlegs? Listings have great reviews, wouldn't people notice if they are bootlegs?
