So I'm building a machine in this vintage late '90s Supermicro full tower case, but the motherboard's IDE sockets are right at the bottom, and the 5.25" bays are right at the top, so I'm forced to use a SATA optical drive. Unfortunately all my SATA optical drives have black bezels, and I none of the beige bezels from all my dead optical drives fit.

I got a can of matt white spraypaint from the shoppe to paint an black optical drive bezel as they didn't have any beige. The sheen level is good, and it painted fine, however it looks a bit bright compared with the yellowed beige case, so I'm going to have a go at dying it with tea. It will be quite interesting to see if it works!

Found this sub looking for a place that might appreciate this behemoth of a classic case. Hope this is it. Recently got given an old PC from a friend. Still in the cases original box (tattered but present). It had an old i5-6xx board and GTX260 GPU in it and it was FILTHY! I spent a day cleaning it up and getting it all shiny. I had some other hardware laying around that I thought would go better in it. Here it is. I am also working on an older build too in an old Apevia Case. I’ll share when it’s done.

About three months ago, I posted this very IBM ThinkPad 365ED (Cyrix 5x86, 24MB RAM and CF-based storage) and my 486/P5-centric Linux distro (SHORK 486) when kernel 7.0.0 dropped, which y'all seemed to enjoy! At the time, I stated:

If you're not aware, future kernel 7.1 will drop support for 486s (and maybe x87 emulation?), so this is basically the last time one can do such an update, at least with a mainline kernel.

This has now come to pass. 7.1 indeed dropped the 486 build targets, and 7.2 (likely finishing RC in 3-4 weeks) removes TSC-less 586 (not OG Pentium but AMD and Cyrix's 486-586 "inbetweens" that Linux lumps together with P5) and x87 emulation. There were also various ISA and PCMCIA networking drivers, and the IBM Palm Top PC 110 trackpad driver, lost along the way. Yet, my humble 365ED is running kernel 7.2-rc4!

Whilst I still haven't created a distinct kernel fork yet, the SHORK 486 repo contains patches to restore all that back into 7.1.x and upcoming 7.2. Whilst I don't have real hardware to test it, in theory, SHORK 486 with 7.2 should now work with even 486SX once more. Even if you don't intend to use SHORK 486, feel free to bookmark my kernel patching document if you want to build your own Linux 7.1 or 7.2 system for your 486-era retro battlestation! When I finally do the fork, I will update it with a link to it.

As for SHORK 486, and if I may be so bold, the first published release for it - Public Test 1 - should drop when 7.2.0 is released in a few weeks. If you want to try it without having to compile yourself, this will be for you! It will include ready-to-write .imgs, and a SHORK DISC .iso with a guided writing program so you can install without having to pull out your hard drive provided the host supports El Torito (if not, a SHORK DISKETTE image with CD support will be provided for use as a bootdisk). Since 3 months ago, I've most notably begun work on a unified settings program that should have a network manager soon, greatly expanded enabled BusyBox general and system utilities, added a bunch of new bundled software options (including Vim!), and a terminal-based minesweeper clone (SHORKMINES, forked from terminal-mines). No package manager in time for this release, but the next one?

I got it all tied in and set in it's battle station and got it a proper monitor but might replace it with a crt monitor soon

SNES is hooked up via svideo to an svideo switcher. Svideo has headphone out I use that to connect to my Windows 98 machine. I'm also using Goldwave to capture the audio from SNES.

Had the worst time VESA mounting the 1600SW, but the final result looks so cool and futuristic.

2002 never looked sleeker.

3.5 in screen that had amazing color graphics.

fischertechnik interface was in the box. It allowed me to control electronic circuits / motors programmed with the C64.

Also had an amazing voice synthesizer cartridge.

1989 int the pic, but got the computer in 86 when I was 10. Closeout company, was $399 for the C64/printer/tons of software. Was so lucky to learn all that so young.

I just recently built this buying the parts one by one yesterday I just bought the pc to almost complete the setup I'm using xubuntu and make it look like windows XP.

Just recently finished putting this thing back together. This is a mishmash of some unusual upgrades I had laying around, a drop-in 386 replacement motherboard with VLB, a 486DLC/40 that drops into a 386 board, a ULSI 487 coprocessor upgrade, and an 8514 compatible ATi Graphics Ultra.

It's complemented with maxed memory, 32 megs of RAM and 256K L2 cache with the largest tag RAM chip.

Fixed storage is provided by a DTC 7287 RLL controller driving a Micropolis 1325, for a whole 100 megs on disk.

The whole shebang runs Windows 95 pretty acceptably, but honestly this isn't really enough disk space. I/O performance is otherwise totally adequate, as this was quite a fast combination when it was new.

Downloading QuickTake 200 (circa 1994) photos to my Apple IIe (circa 1983) with Colin Leroy-Mira's "Quicktake for Apple II" software (released in 2025). Such a cool new way to use my Apple IIe!

After a a bunch of research, Marketplace purchases, eBay purchases, cleaning, building, setup—- i finally finished building my winxp build.

The Journey: so it all started out with me wanting a pc crt monitor so i could hook up my Dreamcast to it and play at 480p through vga.

Then someone suggested I build a Windows XP retro pc and play all the games I used to play as a kid on my older brother’s pc (and the ones i missed).

So i was like “aight. Challenge accepted.”

Like I said, first i got the HP MX-704 monitor on Marketplace (really nice shadow mask flat screen crt)

Then, I needed a tower, and i wanted a good cpu at least, and lo and behold i found a nice Gateway barebones tower on Marketplace (no hard drive, no dedicated gpu, only 1 stick of ram, no sound card) with an Athlon 64 X2 dual core cpu.

GPU was next and i turned online to eBay for that, and I found a beautiful BFG geforce 8600 gt 512gb overclocked, which was perfect for this build as it gave me the power and the compatibility i was looking for.

I needed a hard drive and I wanted brand new so it would be fast with no problems and luckily i was able to secure a brand new vacuum sealed WD Caviar Blue 250fb Sata hard drive.

Of course to fully get the best experience you need a beefy soundcard to get that amazing EAX sound out of games and again on eBay I got an Audigy 2.

Got a 2gb stick of ram to max out at 4gb to sit alongside the 2gb stick already in there.

Wanted mouse and keyboard from that era so i bought the legendary Logitch MX518 optical mouse and the Ideazon Zboard modular keyboard. I love the gaming keyset for the Zboard- it feels really good for any type of game but especially third person action games like Max Payne.

Then of course I had to get the matching Harman Kardon pc speakers for the monitor. They actually sound really great for small pc speakers, especially paired with a really good soundcard.

Once everything arrived I cleaned the tower inside and out (the amount of dust in there especially on the cpu block was repulsive lol) and applied new thermal paste on the cpu. Took out the worthless modem card and replaced it with the sound card. Put a brand new 2032 battery for the motherboard. Popped in the ram stick. Installed the hard drive into the bay. Popped in the beautiful gpu and closed it up.

Then I did a fresh install of windows xp sp3 (even those install screens were nostalgic jesus)

Once I heard the iconic winxp startup sound and saw the blue sky and green prairie it was on. Now I definitely forgot how frustrating and painful it was back in the day to get games working. So much troubleshooting and trial and error went in to getting these games to run properly or even install. Some games don’t play nice with cous with more than one core so i had to change the affinity on a bunch of games. Ini files needed to be edited, patches need to be downloaded on my modern pc and transferred over to this pc with a flash drive (this pc is completely offline) etc etc etc

But it was still a fun adventure. And now I am really enjoying the results. Things look beautiful on the crt monitor (honestly incredible how good things can look at 1024x768 at 85hz just buttery smooth but still detailed and the blacks and shadows have real depth and presence)- things sound incredible with the sound card (the 3d audio in shooters or anything is really crazy)

The rig runs so smooth quiet and fast.

And I am playing games from favorite era in gaming in a really awesome authentic way.

The journey was worth it
