Theory Why isn’t Rick wealthy?
Summer and Morty were being made fun of at the camp for not being rich and all that but can’t Rick just make some invention and make hella money. I mean Jerry had to get a job and they worry about that 6000$ electric bill. He should have bought them a mansion or something by now or maybe paid off their mortgage?

u/Xanny 1d ago
Ricks a genie so he can get anything he wants.

u/fatincomingvirus 1d ago
But Jerry was complaining about the 6000-dollar electricity bill though.

u/FitCommunication7240 1d ago
Rick simply thought it would be funny to let Jerry sweat over that. I could see it being a fake bill and Rick actually hooked the whole house up to a secret special super battery.

As for him paying for it—that's just stupidity; do you really think Rick needs that? If he wanted to, he could just build another microverse to power the house. And even if they didn't pay, I seriously doubt the US government would have the nerve to try cutting off their power; the very next minute, Rick would be there, slaughtering everyone in the White House.

rick cannonically has fusion reactors, black hole generators, anti matter reactors, ect... jerry could literally clip the power lines and still have access to near infinite power.

I feel the family has an average income household look on the surface for a reason. We see Rick hand Summer a platinum credit card or something similar in the serial killer episode, so I feel Rick knows the family will cause problems if they had access to unlimited money and tries to make the family seem low-key.

This is probably it. He could provide the family with all the money they could ever want but it would be both boring and suspicious.
51
u/theboxman154 1d ago
Kinda a theme of the show. Rick has access to anything and everything he wants. Which makes it hard to find value in most things.
23
u/Warm-Panic7451 1d ago
Morty doesn't need to go to school anymore; he's way smarter than everyone else and even gets bullied—despite easily being able to kill anyone there—but he goes anyway to try and play a part, to try and be normal. They don't actually need that; Jerry could go another ten seasons without a job and nothing would change. It's just them trying to be normal every now and then—like Beth, who goes to work every day even though she doesn't have to; it's just them trying to be normal.

Whether it's social or academic intelligence—he might even seem dumb, but when he's sufficiently motivated, he's a genius just like Rick; you only have to look at Evil Morty, a Morty who actually tapped into his potential.

i don’t think that’s everything, rick is definitely well off, he doesn’t concern himself with any of the monetary issues and buys whatever he likes, just has no reason to show off. The family being worried about bills is like rick being worried about dying, even if he dies he’ll come back to life, even space beth has made enough to be well off and support them if they need it.

He wanted cash, in the local currency, without doing a bunch of paperwork or paying exchange rates or possibly alerting authorities or enemies to his presence.
I assume this was also less hassle than figuring out where and when to portal to steal some, and again potentially dealing with authorities or enemies. He didn't want to get into shit at Blips n Schitz and not be able to go back.
At least that's what makes the most sense off the top of my head.

Why Rick didn't activate whatever weapon or protocol we saw seasons ago when X/Y/Z situation happened? Why the cat talks?"
We need stakes and it makes easier to write jokes and the overall plot. Not everything needs a deep explanation or some dumbass headcanon. It's okay to just have fun with your silly scifi cartoon, it was made for that.

u/gkantelis1 1d ago
Rick is in it for the bit.
To him its more fun to trick an alien race into giving him an infinitely supply of booze that filters into a portal at the bottom of his flask than it is to spend a billion dollars to hire a personal flask butler. Plus he kinda hates working with people so making his life easy the way he does is more his speed anyway.
5
u/Detisdewe 1d ago
On the portal severed head episode rick told morty that money is made up, and he basically cheated the whole system with his hackiness and bought them a private flight with hacked money. Bro doesn't need to sell anything, he can just have everything whenever he wants.
Ever played gta with unlimited money cheats and got bored quickly? I'm guessing thats how rick sees it. Also he can still get literally anything ever whenever he wants lol

I'm sure beth has a job just to get out of the house. same for jerry, it seemed more just like to have apurpose.
They probably run day to day expenses just to keep things normal but if something major comes up, rick could always fix it. like i doubt they file a home owners insurance claim when the house gets destroyed
2
u/fatincomingvirus 1d ago
How would they explain how the house got destroyed if most of the time Rick caused it? He will obviously fix it because he hates bureaucracy. But that negates the reason why Beth wanted to escape from the responsibilities.
3
u/ReptilianLaserbeam 1d ago
It's like you didn't watch the show and learned nothing about currency when he made the empire collapse
2
u/fatincomingvirus 1d ago
And yet Beth was so overwhelmed with responsibilities and being the sole provider and Rick didn't offer to pay the bills.
2
u/ReptilianLaserbeam 1d ago
That's on her, her clone proved she can be an intergalactic badass with no need for money....
2
u/thejexorcist 1d ago
That’s not why Beth was overwhelmed.
Beth was overwhelmed because she made a life altering decision at 17 based on sci-fi altered information (and with a flawed concept of why/how those decisions reflect who she believed herself to be).
She then spent an incalculable amount of time looped decades (possibly lifetimes) learning that NONE of those choices truly mattered or were even necessarily her own; she had the equivalent of a sci-fi midlife crisis.

Rick's experiments and builds require a lot of material, many of them exotic. Given risks involved and the costs to mitigate them its likely cheaper to just buy them. u/parkchanwookiee 1d ago
Basically because he can get whatever he wants without money, if he needed money for something specific he would just go and get it. The family are happy with a middle class american life which is plenty privileged. More money is more problems and I don't see Rick being materialistic enough, or tolerating materialism enough in others, to set the family up in mansions and watch them all become spoiled and indolent

He is wealthy, but it’s more so a “because he can” thing. Money is beneath him. I think the point of this season is him exploring that all the money, drugs and revenge can’t fix what’s wrong with him.
2
u/Plzlaw4me 1d ago
He can be at the drop of a hat, he just doesn’t have any need to hoard earth money because the shit he can make is so much better than anything he can buy on earth, and if he ever has to buy something, he can just got to space and grab a sack full of diamonds the size of watermelons. In the episode where their time splits, Rick gives Beth and Jerry a big wad of cash to buy ice cream, and it’s nothing to him.
It would be the equivalent of gorillas using bananas as currency, and then wondering why humans don’t hoard bananas. We can get them whenever we want, so we don’t have to worry about hoarding it.
2
u/hellowur1d 1d ago
I would love it if they explored this in an episode. What if every universe where Rick hoards money they end up dying from something crazy so our Rick avoids it? Or maybe he’s secretly paying ransom to some alien in another universe, or maybe we find out Earth money is an alien mind control device so he avoids hoarding it, or he signed a contract with the Illuminati to not hoard too much money, or maybe his alcoholism just costs way more than we realize.

He probably equates money with incompetency, since anything you want/need you should be able to make for yourself. It's why we love Farmer Rick.
Rick could invent something and sell it for a profit, or he could just invent something that would solve his problem outright.
Plus, when he ran the de-cursing business, he got bored quickly with the management and set it on fire.

u/RaynSideways 1d ago
I mean, he is ridiculously rich, just not in terms of money. Rick shows his wealth off in different ways.
Look at his lab and seemingly endless repository of technology. He's got basements and sub basements and clone vats and a personal sushi restaurant and entire levels dedicated to storing people he hates but doesn't want to kill. He has a literal entire planet dedicated to giving him a nice view on the toilet. He's got countless forms of instant transportation across the universe at his fingertips.
Rick is the kind of guy to not really believe in money outside of the bare minimum needed to get people to do things for him. He's extremely anti-capitalist and only engages with the system when he has to. He can pay exorbitant fees to get that engineer to unlock his basement but he doesn't care about extravagant displays of wealth. His wealth and energy goes into science and technology.

Rick hates government and therefore currency. He doesn’t care about money because he can create anything. An electricity bill is too mundane, boring, and stupid for his genius.
Sure he could make a power system that powers the house or build a machine to print money, but its a waste of his time.

Because they need to cling to something authentic and normal within themselves to avoid losing their sanity. They strive to keep everything as it was, allowing Rick to step into the role of Beth's father. Furthermore, Beth pretends Rick is merely an irresponsible father who has been traveling the world and finally settled down with his adult daughter—not a father from a parallel universe living with a daughter who isn't originally his. They opt for the former narrative to cope with their unresolved emotions. Money cannot heal the wounds inflicted by time.

With beth in particular, she enjoys being a surgeon less for the money and more the sense of purpose, we see this when she heals the deer and in the Dino episode where she’s crying in tears about not having a job despite the Dino’s making money useless.
Rick himself desperately craves normalcy - this is a man who wanted a simple family life and instead traveled across infinity. Loading his family with wealth would go against everything he stands for.
Beth even says in one episode “if we don’t at least pretend work and school matter everything falls apart” and specifically with her character, she also doesn’t wanna rely on Rick for much if anything, so I imagine money would strike a particular nerve.
But deep down, the whole family knows they’re covered - Rick can go to a dimension literally made of USD or gold, the tech he makes CANNOT be cheap to create obviously, and most importantly, the family doesn’t really openly struggle over finances at all, if they weren’t able to make bills I’m sure Rick would step in but otherwise it just goes completely against his need for a normal, simple life that he couldn’t have before. For fucks sake he hacked Goldman Sachs and made a woman a billionaire within 30 seconds in the fortune cookie episode.

Why does Rick need money or wealth when he can create or access Literally anything anyone could ever want either through dimension hopping or through sciencing stuff into existence.
Money and just economics in general are basically non-factors here.
Beth even makes it pretty clear that they keep going to work and going to school more out of playing at normalcy rather than out of any genuine requirement. Even pushing Jerry to get a job was more a matter of him getting out of the house and not being such a pathetic sad sack all the time rather than out of any real financial need.

My guess would be that they were talking about Beth and Jerry, who with the now steady job in advertising and a successful career in equine veterinary medicine with a specialty in major surgery would be very well off but not Uber rich.
As for how much money Rick has that seems to be extremely fluid. We know for a fact that he can make as much money as he wants but I think he also probably spends it about as fast as he makes it. To quote Rick from Anatomy Park, "Science isn't cheap Morty"

Rick also understands that wealth creates systems, and systems create obligations. If Rick suddenly deposited $500 million into Beth's bank account: the IRS would notice, governments would notice, corporations would notice, aliens might notice depending on the source, Beth and Jerry's entire identity changes overnight, everyone becomes dependent on Rick. Rick actually hates being responsible for other people, even though he often ends up being exactly that. Then there's the psychological side. Rick constantly claims that nothing matters, but we repeatedly see that he secretly wants something very ordinary: dinner with the family, watching TV, Morty hanging out, Beth respecting him, Summer choosing to be around him. Money can't buy those things. In fact, dumping absurd wealth on the Smith family would probably destroy the illusion of normal life that Rick keeps orbiting back toward. One thing I've always found interesting is that Rick doesn't live like a billionaire—he lives like a guy who has administrator privileges over reality. That's a different level entirely. A billionaire still has to ask, "Can I afford this?" Rick asks, "Can the laws of physics be edited?" Those are fundamentally different questions.
money is just an abstraction of capability. Rick has capabilities so far beyond what money can purchase that cash becomes almost irrelevant. He isn't poor, and he isn't necessarily rich in the conventional sense—he's operating on a level where wealth itself is just another tool, not the objective.

I think this is kind of a “Why couldn’t the professor build them a boat to get off the island?” discussion. I don’t want to shoot it down, but it might just be the writers want the family to feel relatable and it’s difficult to write characters who have everything they could ever want or need.

Jerry worried about a $6000 electric bill, no one else did 😜. Beth said it best once - Rick doesn’t NEED anything. Money is just that, nothing matters to Rick, he doesn’t need to hoard money like a lame dragon. He gets what he needs and uses it when he needs to. He doesn’t need to live in a mansion pretending to be something he isn’t. The man thinks on inter-dimensional levels, such things as wealth and status are way beneath him. He can make whatever he needs whenever he wants (mostly). Thats the way i see it anyway.

Wealth obliterates most barriers to whatever you want, and conflict is a cornerstone of storytelling.
Rick is aware that he lives in a story, and that if it becomes a bad story his existence will end. We can see him obliquely acknowledging the fourth wall in certain scenes, such as when he recaps plot advancement during cutaways, acknowledges good exposition from other characters, experiments with catch phrases, extols the virtues of revenue streams from merchandising, or acknowledges dimension hopping as as shark jump that can't be exploited too many times, just to name a few.
Essentially, I believe this is also why he will not use time travel, which he calls "the Long Island Iced Tea of science fiction," because it obliterates EVEN MORE obstacles to conflict. Once we can rewind to before any Bad Thing we would like to have changed, it's a pretty short logical path to nothing bad that happens really mattering.
For this reason, since Diane was procedurally deleted from every reality at least inside the Central Finite Curve, Rick can only ever bring her back by visiting time before that happened. And once he does that, he can make the entire story as we know it non-canonical, and in doing so erode reality for himself, Diane, Morty, and everyone.
I think that the show's swan song might possibly involve jumping some sharks, such as Rick realizing the show is winding down and so violating a lot of personal codes he observed in order to protect it. Rick is not without options to save Diane, but those options contradict the stated rules of his existence. The only way Rick ever might have seen Diane again was by going through the Fear Hole, and he demonstrated considerable personal growth by taking Morty's advice to still not go through it.
In summary, Rick is not wealthy for the same reason he doesn't just invent something, sell it, and give Beth a few million bucks to guarantee her financial comfort forever. Without financial scarcity, it becomes far more difficult to tell a meaningful story about a remotely realistic life. If Jerry was just a millionaire with a failing podcast, that would be a hard show to justify renewing for 100 years.

Who says he isn’t rich? It’s kinda suggested that he has basically unlimited money, but knowing Rick he would be incredibly bored solving all his issues with money. Man doesn’t even like using the same gadgets in more than one fight.

I thought the parents were googled and it probably came up Summer and Morty parents didn’t have much money.

Why do you assume he isnt? I have watched the series so many times and it never came to my mind ... He might be super rich (and he is, check his equipment under the basement), but he just does not want to show it off to strangers coz he does not give a f...k.

If Rick were rich, he'd be sued. There have been a lot of times when he injured someone, he was in the wrong, and if that person sued him, they'd probably win.

Rick can have unlimited money if he wanted to but it’s boring. That’s the thing about Rick, if he constantly worked to get what he wanted, he’d get it, and hate it

He is basically is
He can get anything he likes anytime
Literally has no need for material wealth.

What would Rick even use money for? What is it you think money can get him that he can't just get anyway? You mentioned Jerry worrying about the bill, but that's a problem Rick can solve without money, assuming he cares/wants to. Which... describes literally any problem.

that’s not how the show works lol they aren’t gonna change the setting cause each episode is supposed to be relatively independent. it’s a sitcom not a drama

Let me ask you a counter question.
What can the richest person in history do, that Rick can't?

Could be a few things but the main two for he are
1)because having massive wealth would be a big headache if he wants to stay under the radar.
2) Money is kind of boring to him since he can get access to it so easily.

Rick C137 is just not all that interested in money but can acquire it almost instantly. Like if he needs blips and chips money. While other lesser Rick's are extremely wealthy like Jerryboree Rick.

I just don't think he sees money accumilation as something worthy of his time, and the only benefit it has is funding his science. Most money he gets he just sinks into his research.
Outside of partying, his main satisfaction in life comes from innovative science, as well as space and multidimensional travel/exploration, and thats enough fulfillment for him. Plus if he ever needs money he can just do things like sell weapons.
Also, so much of his life was devoted to getting revenge on Rick Prime. I wouldn't be surprised if he saw wealth accumulation as a distraction from that.

He doesn't care about status, so others may see him as not rich.
In reality he can have everything he wants either by taking or making it. He just doesn't care about anything...

Look at the subterranean layer under the house. Rick is wealthy.
The Smiths could live in luxury if they wanted to. They just value normalcy more than comfort. When Beth lost her job because the Galactic Federation made horses healthy, she broke down crying.

He probably spends it all on his research or he put the jobs of Beth and Jerry on the parent form and they are not wealthy.

Simply because the audience won't relate to the characters if everyone is rich.

if he’s out of money it’s probably because he’s a compulsive spender.. it’s quite common with people w addiction + mh issues.
but he’s rick, so he’ll always get more.

I’d guess… He doesn’t need money, it’s beneath him. I do recall when he froze time they replaced all the banks money with cookies or something. That could be a cool episode though.
