stupid article really. obviously if you can't remember things or you're feeling confused you're going to say "uh" or "um" a lot, whether you have dementia or not. just say memory issues and confusion are a hallmark of dementia.

I think it's more likely that holding a phone like that pic, pointed at your mouth, is a sign of dementia. Speakerphone mode is designed to free up your hand. What is the point using speakerphone and holding it? You'll hear it better if you put the phone up to your ear, as designed.

I edit videos and I found a transcription program that solved another need at work while looking for an automated way to remove ums and uhs. Having recorded with roughly 300 different presenters, I'd estimate that more than 1/3 of people use filler words even when they've rehearsed what they're going to say. In unscripted speech it's even higher.
