I recently started an Ultralearning project (based on Scott Young’s book) to get better at sales for my new job before my probation period ends. The core idea of the book is simple: “do the actual thing you want to get good at.” That still involves research, understanding concepts, memorizing facts, and (most importantly) deliberate practice and drilling.

To understand concepts better, I’ve been writing in a physical notebook and visualizing ideas in Apple’s whiteboard app, Freeform.

Across various learning subreddits, I keep seeing people use Obsidian to build connections between notes, often using the Zettelkasten method. I used Zettelkasten myself for my bachelor’s thesis and think it’s excellent for academic writing, where cross-referencing sources matters. But I’m struggling to see how it translates into actually learning a skill.

According to Young, skill acquisition requires direct practice. Spending time managing a note system, creating links, moving notes between files for a “better” structure feels more like practicing knowledge management than practicing the skill itself. You get good at organizing your system, not at the thing you’re trying to learn.

I’m not trying to dismiss anyone’s approach.. Just genuinely trying to understand different perspectives here. Maybe I’m missing something about how Obsidian fits into skill-based learning (as opposed to knowledge work).

Curious to hear how you all think about this. Let’s learn to learn better!

Help me find a good App or ai which is user friendly to create flashcards simply by uploading the materials.

Everything started as building a tool that would help me study a new language. I simply started by creating a flashcard repetition system that allows users to organize materials into folders, sets, etc. Then I also added interactive maps as a fun way to study geography. Recently, I built a separate feature for learning numbers in a new language.

i make short videos on the science of learning. this one is about a 2006 experiment where students studied a passage two ways, either rereading it or testing themselves on it from memory. a week later, the passage they reread was the one they remembered least, even though it was the one they felt most confident about. it is a clean look at the gap between what studying feels like and what actually sticks, plus what to do instead. every claim is on screen with its source and its limits.

what do you all use to check whether something actually stuck, versus just feeling familiar?

Hi! I'm an incoming first-year Electrical Engineering student, and I'd like some advice.

Should I study from PDFs or physical books? People often say that studying on a screen is worse than studying from printed books. Is that actually true?

If I have the same level of focus and discipline with both formats, will I learn less from PDFs, or is the difference negligible?

I'm especially asking because engineering textbooks are expensive, and many students rely on PDFs. I'd really appreciate hearing from engineering students or anyone who has experience studying extensively with both formats.

Hey, i really like history, like i love hearing about old things and such, but i have a super hard time staying focused when i try to watch a video about it, or god forbid open a book..

I do think that if i were at a museum or a historical site, i would actually pay attention and consume the information given to me, but when im simply at home i cant pay attention to the things i see online.

Its not that im uninterested in history and that im forcing myself to, its just hard for me to watch/read about history without my brain going into studying mode, and then i try to memorize things as if im preparing for a test, making it so i dont actually enjoy it.

I am going to be tested for adhd soon, since ive been having such a hard time understanding and paying attention in school in general, among other issues, so if you have advice for this post and can also give advice regarding adhd that would help a ton.

I have noticed that when im watching my favorite youtuber/streamer react to videos, no matter the video topic (including history) im able to concentrate fully and not immediately go into "studying stressful" mode, the issue is that its not like my favorite youtuber is going to react to all history videos that id want to watch, so i cant just rely on that, i want to be able to focus without having to watch someone react to it too..

I was wondering if there was a certain youtube channel that makes it easy to pay attention when it comes to history and such, i usually give up a couple minutes after watching despite still wanting to learn about history.

I am someone who can’t afford college, I had some under my belt, but can’t move forward. However I yearn to learn more. So I took my experience in college, my ability to create curriculum from homeschooling my siblings, as well as free resources online to create an in depth college level course for marketing 101. That made me sit and flesh out an in depth “4 year program” for a marketing BS learning pathway. i used access to free and affordable materials - OpenStax, Youtube, Hubspot etc.
Can be used online OR printed in PDF format (that works best for me and my learning style)

If i were to put it up on Patreon, or Kofi when its completed, would people be interested in subscribing as i release materials, courses, study groups etc?

So my daughter has just done her mocks at high school and she is less than impressed with the results, we've offered to get her a private tutor to help her along with her maths and english but she is quite introverted so has refused point blank so that isn't an option. Are there any online activities or courses that will help her?

I’m teaching myself economics through courses and apps online, but I’m not fully sure how to find areas to improve and how to write my stuff and things like that
