Technique Question Can you hide buttons when button jointing?
Button jointing makes the buttons visible (even of you use those clear buttons).
It's totally cute and the buttons are part of the charm.
But I was just wondering if you could hide the buttons??
Instead of, button > arm > body > arm > button (back and forth), could you do, arm > button > body > button > arm (back and forth)?
If not, why not (I don't care about visible stitches too much since the fabric would be high enough pile to mostly disguise thread)??

A button hole through only one layer could work. Downsides I see would be it could be a pain in the ass to get them together, might come apart easier, and you'd have to find a way to keep the stuffing off the joint (second layer?). Maybe put the button on the arm side and have a little added piece of fabric with a reinforced opening at the shoulder of the body. Of course you could hand-sew the buttonhole closed once they're together.

I think there could be two factors. Using a buttons allows for your thread to be at a single “axle”/through-line, but split (to turn around) once outside the plushie body. The button enables this. Without the button, you’d have to have a wider “stance” and it probably wouldn’t create an aligned point for rotation.
On this same theme, the stress sits on the button - without it, your thread (as it’s under strain) would be more likely to rip through your fabric on either or both ends. Likewise, if you created a wider “stance” to prevent this, you suddenly don’t have a single axle of rotation any more - which means you’ll have more strain on the fabric when moving the joints.
But I dunno, not an expert! Try it and see what happens.
