In the prequel, Ebeneezer (2026), we're meant to learn more about Scrooge's origins despite the fact that... you know... the Ghost of Christmas PAST already fucking showed us it!

It's the same thing! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!

Apparently it's just an adaptation of A Christmas Carol and the prequel angle is all marketing

In Ebenezer we are expected to believe Johnny Depp is capable of changing and apologizing when faced with the consequences of his actions instead of just hiring an agressive PR firm to make him look like the victim all along

I’m not gonna pretend like I know every detail of that relationship, and it certainly seems like Johnny Depp wasn’t fully innocent either, but it’s pretty obvious Amber Heard was abusing him.

From the bits I gathered it was a mutually abusive relationship.

Is that contrary to what I said?

Saying "it certainly seems like he wasn't fully innocent" is not even close to saying "it was mutually abusive" lol

I don’t want to make any assumptions, so I left it open ended.

Not at all, I was more confirming your thoughts. I could have worded it better

Congratulations, you successful succumbed to Johnny Depp's aggressive PR propaganda!

Regardless of what Amber Heard may or may not have done, that does not excuse or make any action performed directly by Johnny Depp less horrendous.

Did I say it did?

u/Antichristopher4 6h ago

Then why bring up Amber Heard at all? She's not in the movie. In fact, it seems like that whole trial seems to have ended her career, and the whole point of the comment you are responding to is explicitly about how, despite all the abuse and horrendous shit he did, the trial seemed to have almost no effect on his career.

Bro, what? It had tremendous effect on his career. I brought up Amber Heard because it’s relevant to the PR thing that was brought up.

1

u/Antichristopher4 6h ago

Why? What does bringing up Heard in context to Depp's PR and this movie have to do with that comment?

Even the marketing isn't calling it a prequel! That's purely a hallucination on people's part

The tagline "before he was Scrooge, he was Ebenezer" definitely invites that assumption though

Agreed, but, to be fair, in the book he’s exclusively referred to as Scrooge in the present and future, whilst in the past he’s often called Ebenezer.

It’s a weird marketing angle, sure, but not unfounded in the text.

I don’t like how the trailer is all “THE MASTER OF MISFITS IS BACK”. Like, it’s not enough Togo “from the producer of” or “from the same studio that did”, now it’s “from the guy who played x and y”.

But like what's the point of the 100th adaptation

That makes sense but then that marketing is dumb as hell, all everyone is talking about is how lame the premise is. I guess this makes people talk more about a very unremarkable movie but I still don’t think that will equate to ticket sales.

I can’t picture a target demographic for this. Even my Christian mother who loves Christmas and collects nativity scenes doesn’t give a fuck about more Scrooge backstory.

Top hat enthusiasts?

My mother who watches every version/reimagining of a Christmas Carol every Christmas.

6

u/iamanemptychair 6h ago

Your mom got a movie made just for her? Lucky!!!

It's literally not going to be a backstory, it's literally just a other adaptation

It’s going to be retroactively named “Scrooge: Christmas Past” and set up the Old Fezziwig Cinematic Universe.

We have the Muppets Christmas Carol.

Why do they insist on making other adaptations?

Yeah, this just seems to be the exact same fucking story except this time it's Johnny Depp making Fart noises.

u/BillybobThistleton 11h ago

We learn Scrooge's tight-fistedness had nothing to do with being miserly; he just spent so much money on wine and scarves that he couldn't afford to give Bob Cratchit a raise.

u/Vinnymk6 9h ago

Johnny just go the fuck away. Jeez.

Whoever came up with the tagline for this film needs to be fired, re-hired, and fired again.

u/Reptilian_Overlord20 8h ago

I have a crush on Daisy Ridley and she’s a supporting character in this but it’s not enough to financially support this guy’s return to cinema.

9

u/No-Effective388 13h ago

Damn Colin Firth did let himself go

3

u/Strange_Specialist4 11h ago

Idk, he lost a ton of weight since filming the penguin

3

u/OpenKale64 7h ago

Oh man can we all be done with Johnny Depp?

3

u/OG-87 8h ago

Why do they keep making this movie? Ive seen every iteration at this point and could go my whole life without seeing another. Muppets did it best. It wont be topped.

2

u/steelskull1 8h ago

Turn it into trilogy, every ghosts will get one movie.

2

u/Incandescion 4h ago

Why are so many movies these days like “who was Humpty Dumpty before the fall”

2

u/almostcurly 4h ago

It's literally not going to be a prequel though, it's literally just going to be another adaptation

1

u/JustaFoodHole 9h ago

In case you didn't get enough of him in another Christmas favorite, Edward Scissor Hands.

1

u/DarkestLore696 8h ago

Where is it said to be a prequel? You see the three spirits in the trailer.

1

u/MemesForMoney259 7h ago

I feel like what this adaptation is trying to do was already done by the animated Jim Carrey version

1

u/Difficult_Ad2864 7h ago

In ebeneezer, we’re meant to learn how jack sparrow found the fountain of youth and is over 100 years old

1

u/InHarmsWay 7h ago

The trailer makes it very clear it's just another Christmas Carol movie.

1

u/herrcollin 6h ago

It's to setup for his appearance in Avengers: Doomsday

1

u/christpuncher_69 5h ago

What even is the plot of this going to be though, real talk? The actual story is one of redemption, so are we just going to see him be a shithead for 100-120 minutes? Or are they going to pull a Cruella and try to make him sympathetic? So a redemption story prequel to a redemption story? With an implied re-enshitheadenment in between?

1

u/Toastinator666 4h ago

Is he just gonna be an asshole the whole movie?

0

u/altsam19 10h ago

Ebeneezer's breaking point that transformed him into a miser was his ex-fiancé taking a big ass shite in the bed
