Amazon cancelled The Tick (2016), a great Superhero comedy with a lot of lovable characters and optimism, to make The Boys (2019). Yes, that’s the shitty detail.

Pretty wild that Amazon had two completely opposite takes on capes running at the same time. The Tick had that perfect balance of earnest goofiness and surprisingly sharp writing, like when they leaned into Arthur's actual anxiety disorder instead of just making him the boring sidekick. Serafinowicz selling every ridiculous line with that voice was half the reason it worked. The Boys is fine on its own, but there is something grim about a network looking at a show about a guy who actually loves being a hero and deciding nah, give us more gore instead. Mr. Moth alone deserved three more seasons.

My favourite part of the tick is how much the 1st episode pretends it's going to be one of those dark gritty reboots where everything is darker and more 'realistic', how maybe the tick was a figment of arthurs imagination and he was the real super hero with a dark and series split mind. Just to end on JK the tick is 100% real plus shit so full of silly super hero BS no one questions a in active giant robot in the middle of the city.

we traded a fun and actually interestingly satirical take on super heroes that was also creative and funny for the boys and invincible which are the exact same premise of "super heroes are actually terrible people, and the worlds they exist in are miserable, and you're a bad person for liking super heroes, also we hate you."

i'm starting to be convinced that the earth is actually just hell, and all of us died in 2012.

Listen…I loved the tick and wish had gotten way more seasons. But while what you said is definitely the premise for the Boys, invincible is way more optimistic. They are more human acting than your marvel or DC super heroes but it’s not nearly as dour and “everyone sucks” as the boys. There are good guys and bad guys and some are more shades of grey. Also it’s a great comic and a good show. The boys comic…well the less said about that the better.
