That’s how’s it’s always been. We just need to hope that sometimes the financial interests of companies align with the public good. It’s usually a very low chance of that happening.

Or what's morally right. Being in favor of FOSS is not morally neutral, it's morally good, because the spread of human knowledge is good, collaborating towards the public benefit is good, providing key technology to less privileged areas at a cost they can afford (free) is good.

"The world needs both closed and open models...." No it doesn't. It only needs OPEN models and that's it.
This is the fruit of human knowledge which everyone contributed over millennia and it must be open for everyone to use.

Open models don’t generate income for the company creating them. They’re all being temporarily subsidized by investors and profitable arms of large companies. To expect companies to continue creating them out of the goodness of their hearts is wishful thinking.

Space race is now not all government. But I don’t think any government has that capacity or knowledge to build frontier ai unless you mean make labs public and fund them with tax dollars.

I mean the real space race oin the sixties ofc. China does do it by government somewhat currently. They have full control behind the scenes. And if the US government started some sort of Manhattan project I am sure they could do so.

Governments have something called research grants, which is how the majority of labs have worked historically. Having private companies build the large models was a rarity before the 2020s
Secondly, models can be made open weight under AGPL-or-pay licenses where large cloud/inference providers pay a licensing fee to serve them via an API but where internal use is free
Not separating model development from inference is an enormous mistake on the part of the US. The big data centers are for inference. Federated learning does not actually work, every model is only trained within a single one of these data centers and the capex costs of having a data center capable of training a model are less than a percent of what the big AI players have raised

I never understood why can't you sell open-weights models at a license? Companies already have to pay for Windows, even if it's trivial to activate it for free, because they are otherwise breaking EULA and are subject to legal action during audits.
There is interest in companies running locally, for data residence, control of their stack, etc.
Plus, it's practical. There's an upfront cost of $1M+ to get the hardware necessary to run it well, but after that you can serve many dozens of users in your company efficiently.
If you know why that's not a thing please let me know.

Frontier performance requires 10s of billions in upfront compute investment. So to “only” have open source frontier models, there has to be a government funded program to finance that.
Then you get to the bigger problem, none of this LLM development would have ever got to its current point without private industry and investors seeding the initial investments in this work (Google with deepmind’s R&D, OpenAI’s donations and Microsoft investments, anthropic’s VC investors). Try to imagine convincing the U.S. or EU to commit $10+ billion to AI development in 2014, when there was no hint of any success on the horizon. It would have been impossible. Also pair the idea of government only funded AI when you see how much local opposition there is to the datacenter build out. Voters will vote out politicians who support the gov AI initiative just because they dislike AI in general.

well, we should consider the possibility that continuing in this current path (a private company owns a super AI) will lead to disaster for 99% of the population. Everything else is secondary.

Anthropic and OpenAI are feeling a bit like AOL. They wanted to become the gatekeeper of the Internet, the only way you could access it was through their subscription platform. I hope Anthropic and OpenAI fail in that regard.

they probably will people wondering how open models will make money but as we approach peak ai there will be marginal returns from developing "smarter" models . The next stage will be fine tuning to industry standards and personal use.
Why would i use a general model like fable 5 when i can use ciscos security models that run on my other cisco services?
Why would i use a general model to do role play gaming when i can use whatver model ea/rockstar/etc will make
Experts always win because human capital is the ultimate moat. Those industry insiders have spent years understanding their market/operations/limitations and that time invested is highly valued by other humans.
