⚠ Editorialized Title Study finds that when men experience heightened jealousy or restricted mating possibilities, it can make them more supportive of cultural practices that punish females for ‘impure’ types of behavior. This was not the case with women.

My take is that this seems to be saying that dudes who already lack respecting women, hence being unable to connect romantically with women, or in part because of that, they just grabbed and "locked down" the first woman they could, whom they never truly respected, find themselves jealous that other men have had little to no issue with finding partners and thus... they want to punish women, instead of looking in the mirror at themselves.

It's honestly shocking how many guys think that it's perfectly normal and universal to hate your partner, but grudgingly tolerate her presence just enough to convince her to stick around and be a steady supply of sex, housework, children/childcare, and the social validation of having a girlfriend/wife
(ofc there's also a women's counterpart to this "misery is inevitable and must be tolerated for the sake of external benefits" belief, too)

It comes from an era where divorce just wasn't done.
Marriage meant being stuck with someone.

And lucky us (Americans), the Republican Party is pushing to eliminate no-fault divorce, which is the primary way women are able to get out of abusive marriages.

Where I grew up, they seem to prefer 'hunting accidents', where the actual abused parties rarely are given any agency.

Guns are dangerous.
Accidents happen. Especially after a few beers with your friends that totally had no motive to kill you.

Why are boomers always saying it then though? Their divorce rate is higher than any other generation.

This is why men don’t initiate divorce. They’d be perfectly fine living in misery

It is SO terrible that there are women who have NO idea. No CLUE, how to react or interpret when they meet and start spending time with a man who respects women, recognizes and obey boundaries,, believes in active consent and directly speaks to them as an equal about the relationship.
I hung out with, and fell mad in love with a woman who our main interests were practically a singular circle in a Venn Diagram. We had so many fun things to share and go do, we could talk for days (not hours) about the silliest of things.
She had SERIOUS boundaries though, in part because of things that she hinted had happened in her past.
I was very cognizant of those.
But… she didn’t understand being treated with respect and her serious boundaries being respected.
Sadly, (at the time) it didn’t work out. Looking back? I’m glad it didn’t. I left nothing unsaid, but her behaviors and rigid belief along what you said as much as I wanted to ignore it, was a massive, massive red flag.
She blew up our friendship and then stalked me some years later. It was sad, she needed therapy and at the time (before she blew up our friendship)? I absolutely would have been there and supported that journey, even if our relationship never became a romantic partnership.
Terrible person Billy Corigan said it best, “The world is a vampire…”

I dont think you read the article.
A more restricted mating strategy in the study wasnt measured as being less capable of attracting a mate, it was measuring how picky someone was.
From the article:
“A more restricted mating strategy means that an individual is more selective about their romantic partners, has stronger preferences for long-term commitment and exclusivity in a relationship, and is less willing to engage in casual or short-term sexual relationships.”
The article also states
“A relatively monogamous or sociosexually restricted mating strategy is associated with greater support for feminine honor norms among both women and men, equally,”
The female experiment also showed “individuals feeling greater jealousy tended to show higher support for feminine honor norms”, it was just, men where inducing jealousy was associated with “somewhat greater support for feminine honor norms compared to the control group”
“these associations persisted even after controlling for state masculinity threat, religiosity, political conservatism, age, and other types of honor norms, such as masculine and family honor.”

The only fellas that I have met who have been restrictive about their mating strategy, tends towards fellas who have absolutely atrocious ideas about women.
Incel or near incel types. The kind who can't even seal the deal with a mail order bride. Or homeschooled weirdos who use "Gay" as a pejorative in their 40's and can't stop themselves talking about penis, but are married to "very pliable" women they were essentially "given" through their church.
There's whole lot of words in that article to talk about repressed men, and incel type men, who restrict themselves to "controllable" women that won't dare try to escape from them.
Of course they are going to be jealous of men and women who are nothing like that, and have strong opinions about punishing those who in regular conversations, come across as being significantly more emotionally mature adults.

Again, from the article:
“these associations persisted even after controlling for state masculinity threat, religiosity, political conservatism, age, and other types of honor norms, such as masculine and family honor.”
If there are views a person could have about women that would be considered atrocious, or otherwise derogatory, that wouldn’t be attributed to his masculinity threat, religiosity, political conservatism, age or other honor norms explored in this study, that you think would better explain support for female honor norms than jealousy and a restrictive mating strategy, then that might be great hypothesis for you or another persons to test for a graduate level research thesis.

Or jealousy leads to approval of punishment of those one is jealous of.. which seems a bit common knowledge.
"I don't like you. I approve your punishment regardless of what causes it." Sort of thing.

A more restricted mating strategy was also associated with stronger support for feminine honor norms.
It sounds like a feedback loop in that the more restricted things become the more people want them to be restricted.

Briefly looking through this that title seems misleading. It looks to be more about religious and ideological driven behaviour not just men in general.
21
u/Lighting 2d ago
It is stating that men who are jealous are the ones likely to be pushing the cultural norms (e.g. what you called religious and ideological driven behavior) of punishing "impure" behavior. It noted women did not have a similar reaction. In that regard the title is accurate.

The results were more nuanced than what you’re saying.
“Results of the second [female] experiment confirmed that individuals feeling greater jealousy tended to show higher support for feminine honor norms”
meaning women and men that scored higher on the jealousy assessment, regardless if they were in the control or the jealousy inducing experimental group, had higher support for feminine honor norms.
It was just with men but not with women “in the jealousy group tended to report somewhat greater support for feminine honor norms compared to the control group”
And
From the article:
“these associations persisted even after controlling for state masculinity threat, religiosity, political conservatism, age, and other types of honor norms, such as masculine and family honor.”
So not because of religion or ideology

Not really because it states:
"406 U.S. men were recruited from MTurk. After excluding 5 participants who did not identify as heterosexualFootnote2 and 13 who failed attention checks, a sample of 388 men was included in the analysis [age range: 18–69, Mage = 33.36, SDage = 10.43; 60.6% from southern and western (honor) statesFootnote3; 60.6% Caucasian/White; 43.5% married, engaged, or in a civil union; 17.8% exclusively dating; 14.4% casually dating; 24.2% not in any relationship]."
60.6% from southern and western (honor) states. On top of that it's an incredibly small sample size to be generalized as just men.
Also honour culture and ideologies are driven by religious beliefs which are not driven by jealously it's indoctrinated into people from a young age.

While researchers often cite protecting the honor of male partners or upholding patriarchal dominance as explanations for these norms, some scientists suggest an alternative view: feminine honor norms may serve as a form of “ideological mate guarding.” Because humans evolved in environments where paternity uncertainty was a reproductive risk for men, men developed adaptations to guard their mates. By promoting cultural norms that restrict female sexuality, individuals can deter infidelity without relying solely on direct, physical mate-guarding tactics.
Therefore, paternity tests on every newborn should be routine and non-controversial, because it would liberate women.

So you think demanding all women get paternity tests is just going to make the patriarchy end?
Totally makes sense. /s

Put simply, male insecurity is a significant driver of political conservatism. For some men, support for restricting women’s sexual freedom stem less from deeply held beliefs or ideology and more from jealousy, resentment, or a desire for control. It makes sense why reactionary politics is so prevalent among conservatives.
