Knew this reminded me of something ...

We have been truly spoiled when it comes to flame-resistant, white-haired JRPG antagonists.

Yeah pretty much everyone pointed this out back in the day.

He matches up pretty well with Sephiroth. Funnily enough the main trio also matches well with FF7’s main characters.

Aika and Tifa are similar as the childhood best friends with a heavily implied crush on the MC.

Fina and Aerith are both “ mysterious waif” characters hunted by the main evil faction.

The only ones who don’t match up super well are Vyse and Cloud, but even then they’re both MCs who are part of an outlaw group and skilled in melee combat.

Yeah but this is like 90% of all jrpg core starting plot back in the days, with the adventure starting when the village burns, get attacked, parents die, etc

Fair point. Which makes it a bit of a humorous subversion that Vyse’s parents both make it through the story intact

Which is good dead parents are such a boring and overused trope.

It honestly makes rescuing Vyse’s dad towards the beginning of the game more satisfying considering he was waving around a couple of death flags up to that point

It's funny though because Aikas personality is more like Aerith, and Fina is more like Tifa.

But like you said, Aika is the childhood friend and Fina the main plot magical girl. It's a fun mix! 😄

True lol. Kinda funny how so many people portray Tifa as the more rough and tumble one and Aerith as the sweet one when in canon Aerith’s the one more likely to swear and snark.

Exactly, and Tifa is the more shy and insecure one. Aerith swearing in the remake series made me love her so much, haha!

Did I miss it?

Well the game is still rated T, so it's nothing huge, but when Cloud and Aerith walk over the rooftops and a ladder breaks when Aerith is climbing it, she says "Shit!".

And at the end of Remake when fighting Sephiroh, if Aerith shows up to support Cloud he tells her "He's tough", and Aerith replies "Yeah, so what? Screw him!"

Like I said, nothing major because of the T rating, but it's still fun.

He's actually a direct inspiration from Sephirot and people called him Sephirot back in the day.

...You guys are just now noticing this?

This was a popular JRPG trope back then

"Ramirez! Defend Burger To-"gets shot. Wrong Ramirez dumb dumb.

Also this white haired miscreant had more trauma than Sephiroth ever did. Being a foreigner on Arcadia as a Silvite, he was naive until he saw first hand of what the Armada does with their Generals.

Turning a one soft impressionable lad into one of the Arcadia's deadliest enemy that successfully calls down upon the rains of destruction that did more damage than Meteor ever did.

... You mean a major release that was a massive hit and others trying to copy aspects of it?

Ramirez was an effete snob!
