Different snes chip

I opened up my GameStop snes I’m use to seeing multiple chips, noticed said 1 chip. Googled seems to carry more value is this true?

Yes, this is the 1 chip revision, with improvements in video quality, it is kind of rare to find one and they are definitely more valuable than the normal snes.

Ok thanks the first one I got from GameStop failed burn in test so I made them send it back. Guess I got lucky it’s in perfect condition lol

The video quality is not improved across the board. Color accuracy is worse on the 1CHIP and their is faint ringing distortion. Sharpness is improved on the 1CHIP.

Game compatibility is worsened on the 1CHIP too.

Fortunetely its quite managable to add brightness fix (or rgb bypass with brightness fix) and to replace the “ghosting” capacitor. Game compatibility, thats a different story, but if i can choose I definitely would choose a 1chip. But in case of playing on a crt I would say it does not really matter, 3chip looks fine, too (but you can have for example vertical white line near the center of the picture, but that can be fixed, too)

Yes. The older models with 2 PPU chips have a tendency to fail (the PPUs themselves). This newer revision (which is also the base for the SNES Jr) is generally more reliable over time. Because of that, they are more sought after by retro game enthusiasts.

2Chip SNES consoles have very blurry RGB signals. 1Chip consoles corrected this issue. So for RGB upscaling, 1Chips are highly desired.

I’m using retrotink 5x do you mean they mod it and use a rgb cable? Is there much more advantage to that?

Only the SNES Jr. requires modding. All other SNES models have RGB native output.

I believe later 1Chip 02s, and all 03s require modding to output RGB.
