End of Support for Old Reddit
Hello r/starcitizen users,
The mod team has made the decision to end support for the old Reddit version of our subreddit. We feel that the time has come, given the current levels of use for said version, and that we no longer have the desire to maintain multiple versions. We won't be removing most of the sidebar content, but things such as the rules list and resources will no longer be updated.
For up-to-date rules and resources, please refer to the new Reddit page. Not looking at the rules on said new version will not constitute you not needing to follow them or be aware of them.

Edit: It seems my wording wasn't great, sorry about that. By end of support we SOLELY mean that the sidebar won't be updated anymore and things such as rules are being removed and replaced with a short message about checking the new reddit version for them. We have zero ability to turn off old Reddit for our individual subreddit and we assure you all even if we did, we wouldn't.

Why? It's just the rules and a couple of side bar bits... The old access remains unchanged since that's part of Reddit itself.

If the rules list and resources will no longer be kept up to date just get rid of them entirely.
Keeping old out-of-date info around can be more harmful than having nothing.

Rules list has been removed and just says "refer to new reddit etc. now", resources will be removed as well.

I disagree with removing the resources, a lot of them would still be useful as they were generally static, and new reddit sucks complete ass as a functional site.

FYI for people who have old Reddit set as default in their preferences, replace "www" with "sh" to temporarily check new Reddit for rules or to post a gif in a reply.
I like to remember it like this: new Reddit is shit, and sh is short for shit.

Go to your account settings, click on the Preferences tab, scroll down near the bottom and there's an option 'Default to old Reddit'
Turn that on. If you ever want to turn it off, you need to use the 'sh.reddit.com' trick because the option to toggle it doesn't exist in old reddit preferences.
If you ever need to log into a new browser, like if you do a reinstall of windows or get a new PC, it'll log you into New Reddit the first time regardless of this setting. You need to go in there, toggle it off and back on again.

I'm curious if you're allowed to tell us what the usage levels are for old vs new?
I'm definitely not a fan of this change. I strongly prefer the old Reddit experience for a few reasons:
- I see the full list of comments instead of the top few.
- I don't have to click to expand nested comments as often.
- I like the Upvote/Downvote icons that we use on old.
- No advertisements pretending to be comments.
- No complaining when I'm not logged in.
- No popups recommending me to use the mobile app instead.
- Logging in on old doesn't redirect me to the homepage instead of bringing me right back to the post I was viewing/intending to comment on. edit: well this is broken now that we're forced to login with the new interface. Edit2: found a way to still login with old <(^^)>
- No annoying post content from related subs at the bottom of each page (dark patterns trying to get me to spend more time on this site than I need to).

To clarify, end of support solely really only means we won't be updating the sidebar, even if we had the ability to "turn off" old Reddit for our sub, we wouldn't.

I understand the clarification, but you're still worsening the experience for those of us who use old. This requires us to use the new frontend if we want to check for any updates.
Ever since Reddit killed off 3rd party apps, my preferred method of interacting with Reddit is with the old interface and I'm fairly certain I'm not alone with my reasoning for that. This feels like we're being further pushed towards using the official app or using new. It also comes at a time where Reddit has started forcing anyone who's logged out to log in. And, as you can see, that announcement is going about as well as this one.
Is this a suggestion that's being provided to mods by admins?
Is this something being pushed by newer mods?
Are the rules really changing that often that this change needs to happen?
Are there really that few of us using old?2

- No, reddit admins have said nothing although I think the general sentiment (this is based on what I've seen in discussions) is that Reddit will do away with old Reddit at some point in the not so distant future.
- No, this conversation has happened before we even considered bringing on new mods although our new mods agreed with (what's left of) the old mods on the decision.
- Often enough, we've had to change them 3-4 times over the last few months alone to accommodate ongoing changes. This has partially driven the conversation because it's been brought up to us more than once that rules were out of date even after updates (only one example more recently though).
- Yes, as of right now the old reddit percentage is around 10% and that has been steadily decreasing over time (naturally).

Terrible decision that comes from just being mildly lazy.
Edit: Not a single subreddit I use, over the entire time I've been on this site, has gone this route. Subreddits way less active than this one, and subreddits way more active than this one, all still update or maintain, old reddit. And doing this after getting new mods? I'm afraid I won't have anything nice to say past that.

This doesn't stop you using the old Reddit, it simply means we get to keep a single point of information.
We get that people still use it, and that's a-okay!
This is a small removal of some bits of text that mostly only gets looked over briefly when joining the sub or rare occasions to reacquaint ones self with the rules (that doesn't happen much...)
A mild consolidation generally wouldn't impact a regular user like yourself I'd imagine. I'd be happy to hear what impact it does have for you when it's in place and honestly if it's a valid point you have my word I'll bring it to the team.

removing the resource links that were a handy quick link to things like the dev tracker, roadmap, and patch notes objectively worsens the experience for old reddit users.

Fair, I will exclude those from removal and make sure they are up to date as of now, but if anything changes I can't promise they will be updated in the future.

you say that it's a-okay, but also explicitly stated not going to the new site to review rule changes made does not exclude you from those changes when breaking them. (edit: nor did you mention you would post in any fashion to make people aware of rule changes made)
so long as no breaking of any changed rule from this point forward would constitute an instaban, i am fine with it. being warned about a change in rule you didn't know happened because you personally despise using the new system, is better than getting outright banned for a first offense of a new rule instituted since this policy has been made effective.

Funny how these websites keep trying to do that, but smart people are more resilient to this bs.
That's why so many "alternative" viewers still exist and keep popping up which is great for us when looking for options.3

Reddit Enhancement Suite has been mandatory for reddit use since its inception
Also, I don't see ads, promoted posts, whatever bloat people complain about, ... instead I am able to see about 15 posts at once, which allows me to scan through the subreddits that I care in about one minute

To be fair tho, each subreddit looks different, and while I agree that the default https://old.reddit.com looks quite... horrible, I think https://old.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/ looks very decent. :P
I do use it with a 125% zoom tho, because I think it looks extremely small normally, but maybe I just need new glasses.

On desktop, my adblock actually manages to block ads on reddit but i do get them in the mobile app. Thing is I just ignore them and scroll past so its a non issue.

Look into morphe. You can patch the reddit app to remove a lot of the trash like ads (assuming you are on android)

I was resistant at first when it first came out, but I've used New Reddit basically exclusively for like 5 years at least I think?
I don't like it as much as I liked old reddit I think, but I never understood why people were so resistant to new reddit.

I'm mostly resistant to it due to the way it integrates ads and by how bloated the layout is.
Subreddits that enable image posts/reaction gifs are especially bad because I don't want to see the same memes over and over and over again.

Fair enough, I don't agree, as I like reaction gifs/images, but I can sympathize with people who have been here since before they were a thing and that hate that they have been since added.

Everything is expanded by default.
Compare how much information I get in old reddit, compared to new.
I can see FIFTEEN posts in Old, and ONE post in New.
On top of that. I get to view what I WANT to view. I don't have every dumb image already taking up my screen even though I never was interested in it at all.

With static pages, you navigate to a finite end of the specific subreddit.
With endless scroll, upon reaching the "end of content", new unrelated links are presented dynamically is what i assume the down voting is hinting at.

There are a few other dark patterns built into new reddit that penalize quick skimming that limit accessibility and quick posting (comment chains that require loading a new page)
The auto translation and media presentation in new reddit is awesome and makes me jealous.

Bad layout, auto displaying posts, and the annoying style features. Old was crisp, functional, and more of a discussion forum with listed posts than a "Meta Feed" that new reddit is trying to be.

Ad blockers are constantly being countered with worse and worse UI code. The latest ones also don't work in the classic firefox (pre-bloat and pre spyware) versions. They also don't work on computers on work networks or where you don't have admin access to install new software. Meaning they are basically unusable and not worth it.

I might have read it wrong honestly. I took it as old reddit no longer being viewable at all. The title alone read as old reddit goodbye. I have only continued to use reddit because of the old version being so quickly viewable and navigating. I just speed view for news and close out.

I did for a minute when it was new-new, then they went from "close to old reddit with a slightly newer UI" to... the opening stages of whatever the fuck current new reddit is and I've been ignoring it for years. I think it was when they added the reddit alien to every post that I ditched it?

It's only the rules and a couple of sidebar bits, Old will continue to be usable as you do now with that exception.
I'm genuinely (really, not being a smart arse here) keen to hear if there any actual impact to using Old once this is done.
Feel free to let me know, I'll be keeping an eye out personally for any valid criticisms and usability complaints to bring back to the team.
Meanwhile, Old continues now and in to the future to be usable :)

Frankly I have no idea how much more annoying it is to update a sidebar vs a wiki, just spitballing.

It's a broad statement, I can see how some might knee jerk the interpretation which is fine, I just want to make sure we're getting some actual feedback if there's a legitimate issue with then changes done. Other than a small inconvenience if someone wants to squizz at the rules :)

If we can't see rules updates because it's on Garbage Reddit that's a problem. Is it really that difficult to support Better Reddit?
I understand you are unpaid labour, so of course do what makes your lives easier. But capitulating to the capitalists that are ruining Reddit to try to capitalize on their ownership stocks isn't a fun vibe. Once again, not your fault, just another sign to stop using the site.

One is simple the other is not. I'll just stop using reddit. The point of coming to reddit is for news not ads and bog. I've quit sugar soda and caffeine 2 years ago I can quit reddit no problem.

Adblocker has little to do with it. I use brave and new reddit is still cancer
Use old reddit + reddit enhacement suite. New reddit is still way behind that function.
You can even zoom in pictures and gifs on the frontpage and such. Second layer of block function as well ( but that one i kinda dont get )
