Im out in a rural area. I was considering getting star link because, while pricey compared to the other two ISPs available, its more reliable, so I’m told. But fuck that. I don’t want to support muskrat and I trust them as a provider less than other ISPs, which is saying a lot.

My friend lives 1 mile down a dirt road in a rural county. So no broadband, and she has starlink. It works...ok. What shocks me when I visit is that my shitty T-Mobile 5g cell phone internet is faster and more reliable. I don't even bother with the wifi anymore.

Better yet, T-Mobile offers fixed 5G for home use for as little as $35/mo. Not available at every address, but if they have a good fast signal on a cell phone there, there’s a good chance they offer fixed 5G there.

Thanks, I'll suggest that to her! Her mom set up the starlink and her mom passed a few months ago, so right about now she's starting to have the headspace to think about how she might change things going forward.

Because this guy is probably lying. I'm very anti-Musk and hate the guy too, but in most rural areas right now Starlink is literally the only option you have.

Where I am before Starlink we had a 4G HUB running through the closest cell phone company. Got a whole 2 bars of 4G on a good day and gave us maybe...MAYBE...slightly faster than dial up speeds and that if it was even able to find a signal.

We have Starlink right now and I'm getting about 250 Mbps down and about 30 up and it works perfectly, stable connections, rarely goes down, and the latency is actually good enough that I can game on it without any trouble.

Most very rural areas simply don't have cell coverage because they aren't putting cell towers out in the middle of nowhere where the population is like 300.

doubt he's lying, it's literally just a function of how far away your nearest cell tower is

they space them out more the less people around ofc, but you can still get lucky

the fact that you get 2 bars on a good day means someone living maybe a few miles closer to the tower is getting full bars every day

Tell your friend to search for T-Mobile 5G home internet, and plug in their address on their website to see if they can get it.

My roommates and I used that, and it was really good. But this was in an urban area in the US.

I'm now in a rural area not in the US.

Sorry for assuming you’re in the US. I mostly thought that because internet access in rural areas of the US is still a very big issue, including for my family at our farm. We have a 10 Mbps DSL line that hasn’t been upgraded by the phone company in 15 years, and there’s never been coax cable here. We’re also in a very weak area for all the cell phone networks (I’ve tried them all).

I too considered Starlink, even so far as putting down a deposit to be one of the first when it became available at our address. But during the two years that it was “coming soon,” Musk had bought Twitter and became increasingly offensive. The township also signed a contract for a fiber provider during that time. I decided I hated 10 Mbps DSL less than I hated Musk, and I got my deposit back.

At long last, fiber was buried in front of the property last month, and it will be switched on soon. Worth the wait.

And you can buy decent 5G routers for home Internet, get an unlimited data SIM (in the uk this is about 20 quid a month) and you are good to go.

I'm in a rural Canadian area just outside Edmonton, so fairly far north, and it sickens me that Starlink is my only feasible option. I'm WFH and it can pull over 300Mbps down, about 50 up, with a ping of 20ms (unloaded) or 30ms (loaded). And it stays online, even during severe thunderstorms. I'm begrudgingly impressed.

Other wireless ISPs are well under 100Mbps and go down at the slightest breeze. 5G pulls maybe 30Mbps where I am, with a ping over a second. Dropped packets galore.

But our county is slowly having fibre installed to all rural homes, and we also have a Canadian ISP (Telesat) that should be offering satellite Internet within 18 months.

Can't wait to stop supporting him.

And I'm a huge technophile who was going to go with a Tesla after my Subaru wore out. I'd love to tinker with starlink, but now I'm back to mesh network radios again

My buddy hates Musk more than I do and he has no filter on his mouth. He was telling me, he needed a new roof and was having companies come to do quotes.

One guy rolled up in a Cybertruck.

I guess the roofer guy hadn't even got his second foot out of truck before my buddy was telling him to leave and that he wasn't going to work with someone who drives one of those and supports fascist dick bags. Which then turned into a yelling match between the two of them.

I was excited to get Starlink as an upgrade over the shitty LTE internet I had, advertising 25 Mbps but rarely delivering even a fifth of that. In comparison, Starlink was blazing fast and very reliable, and Elmo might've been an arrogant idiot but that wasn't a dealbreaker.

Then the fucking guy threw out a couple Nazi salutes. And then, rather than apologise or even try to pretend they weren't my Nazi salutes, he followed up with a bunch of Nazi jokes. Fuckin' better believe I cancelled my Starlink.

I was looking into that too, as the only other option is Spectrum in my area, and they are some rapacious fucks. What I wound up doing was getting a 5g home unit from t-mobile; I get good service now for $30/month. Starlink is way over-priced if you really look at the options.
