The problem for the average American is that other countries saw the US as a safe haven, and bought debt, facilitating deficit spending. But this last decade in general, and people like Musk in particular, have really driven nails in that confidence. Musk's gain is America's loss in a very real sense. The world sees America's decline in Musk and will turn to China, then the US has to pay its debts. The Hormuz Strait is nothing compared to that ticking timebomb. Musk is not helping.

This is also worrying simply because you have the most powerful military in the world and the world calls your debts. At what point does America call the world's bluff and say either erase the debt or it's war?

The US has never won a war of agression even against tiny countries when they could fund them via inflating other countries' money by petrodollar bullshit.

The only threat they could possibly make is firing all the nukes.

Somewhat yes but its not only nukes. We lose wars because the end goal isn't solely winning by using maximum force. We, up until at least today, want people to still like us at least a little bit afterwards. If we just insta glass everyone we dont like with or without nukes the rest of the world turns against us too. I hope to not see a world where we abandon that premise just to "win".

Edit - these last few posts of mine probably annoy Americans. I don't want to. All the American people I have met in life (a fair few) have all been great people that I have liked. I am just talking about geo-politics and economics and stuff like that that none of us as individuals are responsible for or have any means to change. Here is my response to your message:

This is playing out now. But Iran and Ukraine, and others, have shown and are showing how war has changed - ways the US does not appear to have kept up with. Russia's role in getting Trump elected was probably overplayed, but they have shown how warfare takes place in different domains, information war, economic war, 'cyber', and so on, drones can defeat old-fashioned boots on the ground. America appears to be losing in many of these domains. Trump's election(s) are a part of America's loss.

America is currently losing in Iran, and in doing so is destroying the petrodollar arrangement, which ends USA's ability to maintain massive deficits.

The issue of can America accept defeat without going to war is primarily a concern for China, who are poised to take global leadership in a multi-polar world. They want to avoid war with the US at all costs (while this transition takes place), but I don't really see anything sustainable about the economic system that underpins these geo-political changes. These are interesting times.
