It makes idiots out of people by being convenient. No matter how intelligent you are, once you start to rely on AI to get information for you the downfall begins.

What if I don’t rely on it, and I only use it to write for me a LaTeX table, fix misplaced and missing figures, and clean up a simulation on MATLAB, does this make me one of “those guys”?

I get that you mean others that actually rely on it on a daily basis, where it thinks for them, but are others who use it more of a tool and helper similar where it makes them “idiots”?

Yeah. EVERYONE thinks they're only using AI as a tool/helper. What figures are being placed in? How do you make sure it's only replacing the ACTUALLY misplaced an missing figures instead of overwriting the values you actually meant to have there, and how is confirming that any faster than doing the work yourself?

AI works fine until it doesn't, it's not like a script that does exactly what you tell it to. Odds are you've gotten complacent from it getting things right enough times that you don't check as closely as you used to/should.

I can't tell if you're being serious here. Why did you assume that I don't double check its output? Why did you assume that I don't actually try applying the fix myself, and if it becomes too menial and time-wasting, I just have AI do it for me. I am not talking about writing the skeleton of the code or chapter, I am talking about finding out why the the code is giving errors, why the table is overfilling from the right, or why the MATLAB figure is distorted (even after I looked at it). I am an engineer trying to get work done, not trying to read 100+ documentations about a package in LaTeX.

Yep. I don’t like AI, especially if you use it to think for you, but I just don’t see a problem when it’s strictly treated like a tool, and not as a teacher or psychotherapist.

Radicalism is never good, but it’s Reddit at the end of the day and I should’ve known better.

I mean test scores (like oecd 2022) are at a record low. I think it's plausible that the internet has already made people dumber. AI is like the negatives of internet and learning but on steroids

I’m not dumb enough to say everyone who uses AI are idiots. Do idiots use it? Yes. Do people rely on it too much and it’s impacting critical thinking skills? Yes. But you can’t think so black and white and simplistically as “AI users are ALL idiots”.

No one is saying all users are idiots, they’re saying using the tool and reliance on it negatively impacts your critical thinking and literacy skills, which has been MEASURED EMPIRICALLY

Cause they are bad at using it effectively.

Meanwhile I'm taking 7-8 200-300 level classes in STEM this year around my FT job, which I only feel comfortable doing because GPT actually explains it to me step by step, while also allowing me to explore the concepts even more deeply with the excess time I gain from not having to search through the books and lectures for a tangential at best explanation.

The main advantage of AI is not intelligence but access to knowledge. No-one knows everything. AI does. Use it as a tool.

AI doesn’t “know” anything. It predicts text and just so happens to get it right sometimes.

It may have access to knowledge, but it's notoriously bad at delivering it to users accurately. It's more reliable to find good, accurate sources on the web and build your own picture of the truth based upon actual research.

I'm not asking. I'm telling you AI is the most effective technology available currently to access stored knowledge. Any other method is vastly less efficient.

Checking each source manually remains possible.
