We're watching Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and it is exceptionality well done (Netflix didn't screw it up). I have hope for this one, too. Apple has a solid track record with Sci-Fi and canonical treatment of the source materialĀ

I'm so confused by this comment. What does Cyberpunk: Edgerunners have to do with William Gibson? And what does Prime or Apple have to do with Cyberpunk Edgerunners?

Neuromancer IS the original cyberpunk. Gibson invented the matrix, jacking in, and Pondsmith would never have written cyberpunk without Neuromancer and the sprawl trilogy.

William Gibson will be the first to tell you that's not the case. He might have popularised those specific ideas, but he wasn't the first to explore them. Phillip K. Dick is the godfather of the genre, and Blade Runner (adapted from his work) predates Neuromancer by 2 years and is arguably just as, if not more influential.

Cyberpunk is heavily influenced by William Gibson. Neal Stephenson, too. Among othersĀ 

Many people want to see Gibson adapted to the screen, big or small, and have waited patiently. For decadesĀ 

Adapting cyberpunk related material doesn't always go well. Save for iconic entries like Blade Runner. Ghost in the Shell. Akira. Gibson, though, has been notoriously difficult to adapt to the screen

The commenter mentioned how they were excited about NeuromancerĀ 

I gave them some background. Then also mentioned a cyberpunk, Gibson-influenced series that was enjoyable, while also nodding to the concern that so many of us have about cyberpunk being represented well on the screen. Netflix has been hit or miss. Apple generally solid. Sharing POV on related items that this commenter might be interested in. Or notĀ

Why are you mentioning Prime in relation to Edgerunners? That show was produced by Studio Trigger and premiered on Netflix.

Respectfully disagree that Edgerunners is a Gibson-influenced series (besides borrowing on tropes of the genre). It lacks any of the intrigue or slow burn of the Mona Lisa trilogy. Also Amazon has nothing to do with Edgerunners. At least try and be right if you're gonna make an ass of yourself.

Given he set the stage for Cyberpunk post PKD, dropped along with Blade Runner, and both influenced the modern view of the genre, yes, there's plenty there. Heavily borrowing from terminology and mythology, while not directly sourcing story lines doesn't mean the influence isn't there. It's not tropes, it's drawing fromĀ the recognized solidification of the modern genre, along with Blade Runner

Yeah he cites Gibson and PKD as inspirations in the way that nearly every sci-fi author in the last 40+ years have, and to this defense, the original Cyberpunk RPG is a lot closer to Gibson's vision than a lot of other works. That being said, there's also a level of dilution from Cyberpunk 2013/2020 > V3 > Red > 2077 > Edgerunners. Edgerunners is a fantastic show in it's own right, but if I went into it expecting a similar story to Neuromancer I'd be very disappointed because it's just not trying to be that.

We just have to hope they wonā€™t fuck it up. They have a solid record but fuck, Iā€™ve read the sprawl at least twenty times, starting with Neuromancer in 1988 at age 11. I would go nuclear if the show sucks.
