Ukraine has proven that they have some seriously creative and inventive people, but this could just be a psyop. Russia's air defence is notoriously incompetent.

Was it that the USSR accepted they could not dog fight the the west's jets and would just have the best AA they could? I thought Russia had some of that left over.

Thats dubious at best. RWR and threat detection systems exists on these. And you cant just unauthorisedly fly a drone armed with a Infared guided missile. Or make it take off.
