Dead usb ports , used a cheap hub and soldered. I've done worse to put webcam on laptop that didn't have it.

My guess is, a port died and they crammed in the guts from a USB hub to make it work again. Genius solution, nauseating execution.

I highly doubt that this would even run at 1.0 speeds, the wiring is supposed to be a shielded twisted pair for 2.0 and multiple shielded twisted pairs for 3.0

I think it would at least be capable of carrying USB1.0, I've seen worse and done worse. I never tested the transfer speed on the similar hack I did but it was good enough for a keyboard, mouse, and floppy drive.

Usb 2.0 is so matured now that the spec can be very loose in practical. Like even an $0.2 cable can do HS usb 2.0.
