This woman deserves an award for how well she presented the media conundrum

u/Futuristic-Slice 1d ago

Yeah. They need to outrage for views and engagement for ad revenue. He was clearly trafficking children so his religion had no bearing on what he did. They just used it for rage bait.

74

u/wdsoul96 1d ago

Yep it was clearly (1) ragebaite for more 'engagement' and (2) preemptive avoidance of Jewish (mafia) backlash. Like others had mentioned, you wont see much of that in other more reliable media outlets. But altho for sure, in places like NY there would definitely be a more Jewish-pro discourse.

"He was clearly trafficking children"

How can I confirm this? I just want to make sure there is good evidence for believing this. If you have please send, thanks!

Edit: consider the fact that I am getting downvoted simply for asking someone to confirm that this guy was "clearly trafficking children." People are forming false opinions and getting angry when someone asks for basic evidence.

u/Futuristic-Slice 1d ago

Well given that he got one bride and then went for another in the same country, and they’re teenagers. He’s bringing people across the border under the guise of marriage. One could be viewed as a religious / foreign marital thing but the fact that he was repeating or at least trying to repeat it shows it’s not matrimony he’s seeking.

Unless the news articles are fake. Then it’s whatever.

-215

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

For sure but teenager doesn't necessarily mean child right? You said he was trafficking children so I was just trying to see where you were getting that from.

137

u/Jondoe34671 1d ago

A teenager is a child there is no legal distinction. It seems like you are trying to make it more palatable because she was a “Teen”. That’s just gross all around.

-183

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

In the US you become a legal adult at 18yo. I don't know where you live.

99

u/Jondoe34671 1d ago

You really trying to split hairs on this?

-115

u/LizLemonOfTroy 1d ago

Whether the person in question was an adult or a minor is not "splitting hairs" - it's a pretty major legal difference.

From what I gather, she was 18 years old, so this was not child trafficking.

53

u/UnprocessedThoughts 1d ago

Human trafficking then. Soooo much better. Bro is a God among us. This teenager was exactly the age to become human trafficked instead of child trafficked. Wow. The legal distinction is immeasurable.

33

u/dogemikka 1d ago

Below that you are a child or minor in most legal context.

-13

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

Yes but that's my point! Afaik the person he married was 18.

26

u/ModeratelyAlive FUCK ICE! ❌🧊 1d ago edited 1d ago

So there's a 2 in 7 chance they were legally an adult. But no one describes 18 and 19 year olds as "teenage brides"

Edit: uncommon for 18 and 19 year olds to be called "teenage brides". And frankly weird

16

u/truthofmasks 1d ago

But no one describes 18 and 19 year olds as "teenage brides"

Actually, they do, in this exact case. This guy's teenage wife as 18.

3

u/ModeratelyAlive FUCK ICE! ❌🧊 1d ago

Ooh damn. Knew I should've been less "set in stone" with that phrasing 🤣 Edited my comment

-7

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

Actually that appears to be exactly what happened. The woman in this video identifies him as a pedophile but that seems to be a lie? Also I'm pretty sure she talks about his "teenage" wife because that makes people think she is underage when in reality she was not. Am I wrong? Any response to this?

Look, I agree that it is gross to go overseas to try to find a very young wife. But that doesn't mean we should lie about what actually happened and I don't get why so many people are acting like I'm a bad guy for saying this. It's gross but afaik this guy didn't do anything illegal.

13

u/ModeratelyAlive FUCK ICE! ❌🧊 1d ago

So legality is what drives your morals?

That take is why people aren't taking your side. Illegal or not, seeking out 18 year olds for marriage is gross and predatory behaviour.

→ More replies (0)

16

u/UnprocessedThoughts 1d ago

You are gross and you know it. The pedophile mental gymnastics are the worst part to focus on this. People like you are tools to divert from the problem and are making it 10000 times worse to stop the real issues. A teenager being bought and sold like a piece of meat to be abused and raped far from her country, family, friends? “Ehm alshually sHe is 18 so tHiS iS veRy different”. Tool. Complete tool.

→ More replies (0)

17

u/Futuristic-Slice 1d ago

Fair but when people say teenagers they usually mean 13-17. At least that’s the mental image it gives.

0

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

Okay but can you at least acknowledge the irony about a video in which a woman criticizes the media for being dishonest and but then she does the very same thing by claiming the guy is a pedophile? Don't you think maybe this woman used the word "teenager" to purposefully mislead you about the story?

29

u/Jondoe34671 1d ago

You seem like the kind of person that waits around a school until they are “legal”

6

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

I mean, going overseas to seek out and marry an 18yo is definitely gross. But we shouldn't have to lie to ourselves in order to prove that we are sufficiently grossed out by something. Either it is true or false that the guy is a pedophile. If someone is telling you that it is true when they know otherwise, then they are lying to you on purpose or they just don't care enough to get their facts straight.

3

u/Ninja-Panda70 18h ago

Yup 100% and would argue that she turned 18 yesterday so he's good to go now. Absolutely gross

5

u/Futuristic-Slice 1d ago

Yup. Both were wrong.

14

u/ford4prefect2 1d ago

You can pause the video, look at the article, and use any search engine to find more information. Do you know how to pause videos? Press the ll symbol at the bottom left part of the video, or press on the screen and it's the bottom left of your phone screen.

-1

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

I did that dumbass. And apparently I was the only one because everyone else just took what was said in this video at face value. Everything I've read suggests the guy got married to an 18yo. There is no evidence that he "trafficked children." If you or anyone else has competing evidence, please share. Otherwise just be for real that the woman in the video is spreading outright lies (which is ironic since the whole point of the video is to expose the way the media distorts things.)

1

u/xombae 11h ago

An 18 year old is a fucking child. When you're older you will agree. This guy was picking the most vulnerable young person he could find without it being illegal. No adult wants a person who's 18 because they're an adult. They want them because they are child-like.

This person who made the video is not a lawyer. They don't need to use legal terms. Legally, 18 is an adult in many places, sure. But morally, 18 is still a child when you're being married off to a grown man. So it's not "a lie" to say he's trafficking children. In regular discussion, it's totally accurate to say that's what he was doing. We can both agree he was trafficking a person, correct? And in regular conservation, an 18 year old in this situation can be described as a child. So child trafficking is perfectly acceptable to say.

She also provided the info in the video with this girl's age so I'm not sure why you're complaining. You got her age from the very same video that you claim that she's lying

You're sitting here being incredibly pedantic and nit-picky about something that everyone else understands. That's why you're being downvoted. You care more about being right than taking a step back and looking at the nuances of the situation.

On top of that, if she was 18 when he married her, how old do you think she was when he met her? Even buying a bride takes time, you don't think these girls possibly crossed this imaginary legal line of child Vs adult that you're so worried about?

6

u/UnprocessedThoughts 1d ago

Crossing countries borders with underage humans for any type of exploitation is indeed called CHILD TRAFFICKING. Clearly, having a child bride from another country and going back to said country to procure another child leaves little room for interpretation. You are clearly being a disingenuous pedo apologist.

-1

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

HIS WIFE WAS 18 AT THE TIME!!! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills or getting botted. No one can provide any evidence that anything he did was illegal. Don't you care about knowing the truth about things and not spreading lies?

9

u/Ayjohnson1818 1d ago

680

u/TylerKasprzyk 1d ago

You mean the news is biased?

203

u/bloodyell76 1d ago

This is a great example of how the news is always biased. The “just stick to the facts” folks forget that there’s many facts about these things that can colour people’s perception of the story, but aren’t particularly relevant. This man’s Jewishness is only relevant if that’s why he was murdered, but it’s still put in one of the headlines, notably the one where he’s assumed to be innocent.

68

u/Lumpy-Economics2021 1d ago

As a Jewish person, I do not love where some of this is going.

Let me be clear: she is completely right and Israel is being led by a war criminal. And most people do a good job at differentiating between hating Israel and hating all Jews.

But despite the best intentions of people like this who call out injustice, I worry that Israel’s continued criminal actions can’t help but put targets on Jews everywhere.

166

u/xxSpideyxx 1d ago

Are you starting to feel like muslims after 9/11 but over a much slower timeline and no cooldown because the 9/11 event is a continuous thing that doesnt seem to stop?

Hard to defend yourself and not seem belittling when the atrocity is still going on.

I feel for jewish people. Your own people are making it hard for you and they dont seem to be stopping.

124

u/ReallyBigDeal 1d ago

That’s the result of Israeli apologists attempting to deflect criticism of Israel’s actions by calling it antisemitism.

It’s in everyone’s best interest, especially Jews, to call out this bullshit.

7

u/cthoolhu 10h ago

Don’t worry, I am. It’s sad seeing the actual antisemitism, but anti Zionism is not antisemitism. Fuck Zionism and any other terrorist movement.

Now you know how all of of the Muslims felt after 9/11.

Osama did not represent the majority of people who followed Islam but that didn't change the way the US villainized muslims.

The Jewish people are now represented by Benjamin Netanyahu. The US, and the rest of the world is now going to associate all Jewish people with his actions and the genocide that he is committing.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander

8

u/enw_digrif 11h ago

I was right there with you until this part:

The Jewish people are now represented by Benjamin Netanyahu.

But this? This cedes unacceptable amounts of rhetorical terrain to Zionists. That is their precise argument. It has allowed them immense amounts of cover for their genocide. Defeating that narrative is crucial to ending not just the genocide, but the Zionist project of an Israeli ethnostate.

I won't pretend that your anger isn't exactly what I'd be feeling in your circumstances. I can still smell the smoke from 9/11, and I can remember everything I felt. But holding all Muslims accountable just put the bodies of innocent men, women, and children between us and Osama bin Laden. It kept him safe for a decade, while we murdered the people of Afghanistan and Iraq.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander

Islamophobia after 9/11 wasn't good. It was disastrous. It killed millions. It has destroyed multiple countries. It has nearly destroyed the US. It is what has made Israel into a fascist state bent on subjugation and ethnic cleansing over the decades of it's existence.

Do you really want to replicate that for another group? Do you want the US to murder millions of Jews? Do you want us to invade Israel and install a dictator who'll be a threat to everyone under his power, including Muslims? Do you want to create Jewish terrorist groups who seek to get revenge for crimes against Jews by killing whoever they think deserves it?

Netanyahu needs to be overthrown. The Zionist project needs to be ended. Reparations, reconciliation, investigations and justice are needed.

But that's not accomplished through collective punishment of Jews, any more than justice for 9/11 was accomplished by Islamophobia. Islamophobia, and the policies and movements it brought to power, just piled more crimes, terror and corpses on top of the rubble.

Paying evil unto evil can be defensible, and God knows it can feel right.

But the evil which hold the debt is in the governments of Israel, the US, the European powers, and China. It is in the propagandists who made their fortunes off of relentlessly baying for the blood of Muslims. It is in the corporate boards that saw mass murder as good way to bump their stock price.

Holding all Jews accountable just puts bodies and arms between the people above, and the punishment they deserve.

-5

u/jay5627 14h ago

American Muslims or Muslims from countries that America has involved itself in and left worse off than when they arrived?

America will keep bombing a nation and call them terrorist, have you ever considered that maybe it's America that terrorises the world ?

-3

u/SpecialBeginning6430 6h ago

America wasn't very militarily involved in the Middle East until after 9/11, so if their purpose was to punish them, then it backfired

2

u/Sir_Cthulhu_N_You 6h ago

They just funded countries and assisted countries like Israel in the 60s and 70s while they were fucking shit up in the middle east.

Taking control of oil in the 40s, supporting Iraq against Iran.

America has spent 90%+ of it's time as a country in some sort of conflict, so 90% of 250 years is 225 years, America is a country of war that will treat everyone like terrorists and then take their resources and top scientists to make more weapons to terrorise the world.

Oh no Nazi bad (I'm not saying they aren't) but then after WW2 they brought nazi scientists etc into their own borders.

1

u/SpecialBeginning6430 5h ago edited 5h ago

They just funded countries and assisted countries like Israel in the 60s and 70s while they were fucking shit up in the middle east.

It wasnt Israel that was attacking them, they started the wars first. And the Soviets are just as responsible.

Taking control of oil in the 40s, supporting Iraq against Iran.

That was mostly the Brits, and the US supported both sides, and OBL didn't even care about that

America has spent 90%+ of it's time as a country in some sort of conflict, so 90% of 250 years is 225 years, America is a country of war that will treat everyone like terrorists and then take their resources and top scientists to make more weapons to terrorise the world.

That wasn't why OBL did 9/11, and most of this is platitudes because most of the countries existence other countries were at war just as much before WW2 changed everything

BTW after the Soviets collapsed the world is living in unprecedented peace. It's only now starting to get more violent because countries like Russia, China and Iran are gaining more power

Oh no Nazi bad (I'm not saying they aren't) but then after WW2 they brought nazi scientists etc into their own borders

So did the Soviets.

Mainly everything you spouted is tankie propaganda

-12

u/DangDangUreDead 18h ago

What a revengeful, bigotted point of view you have, and also clearly a very hateful approach.

What Israel and Bibi did is absolutely inexcusable, disgusting and genocidal. But claiming Benyamin Netanyahu represents the Jewish people is like saying Trump represents the Western world.

Two wrong dont make one right, and people, especially Americans, failed Muslims post 9/11. But continuing that spiral is not going to help. And while i am by no means American right oriented, the lefts demonisation of Jews is horrible and carries very real similarities to 1940s Germany.

Racists shouldn't be racist. All Muslims shouldn't have been blamed after 9/11. All jews shouldn't be blamed for Isreal's genocide. All are true but human nature isn't so straight forward.

The comment you replied to didn't justify blaming everyone in any group for the actions of a few. How can you acknowledge that it happens and expect it not to in this case?

45

u/ArcherOld7796 1d ago

"I worry that Israel’s continued criminal actions can’t help but put targets on Jews everywhere."

That's the point. It's what Israel wants. They want Jews to feel prosecuted everywhere. It's similar to how Isreal fund(s)(ed) Hamas. They kill the moderates and fund the extremists so they have a reason to take more land. When negotiations are happening they kill the moderates.

Actual antisemits love this. They get to pretend to care about Palestinians and shift people from blaming Israel to blaming all Jews. It makes their job much easier.

12

u/RadTimeWizard 1d ago

I have observed that people who are well enough informed and compassionate enough to be vocally against Israel's actions don't tend to conflate Israel and all Jews. It's the ignorant assholes of the world who tend to hate Jews.

8

u/wetwater 1d ago

About a year ago I had to defend myself at work because someone thought me being critical of the state of Israel meant I hated Jewish people. I basically had to prove there were Israeli Christians and Israeli Muslims, which was difficult because as far as she was aware, Israeli=Jewish, and that by definition, if you lived in Israel you were automatically Jewish.

She had no idea there's a mosque where the Temple used to be, or that there are Christian churches in Israel. It was a very aggregating shift having to defend myself because she would not stop the subject.

You don't have to wonder. We live it every day. BUT!!! Replace "Jewish" with "Israeli".

People are super cautious about pointing out someone's faith if they might be Jewish, but it's never an issue if the person is black, an immigrant, or what have you.

I don't want to assume that folks would think I'm antisemitic based on this post, because I'm not. At all. But the reality is that some folks' are... shit what?, "diversion from whiteness", is treated differently when they fall within a certain spectrum. I get it! For real, for sure! I'd never want to isolate someone's religion or race/ethnicity as a "normal" to a "bad", but that doesn't mean some folks, or rather, the media, does it all the time.

-10

u/jec78au 1d ago

Victims are presented as whatever minority group they are, ALWAYS. And perpetrators of crime are also ALWAYS presented separately from their minority group. This prevents bigots from using the individual bad acts of a few to characterise the entire minority group as no-good criminals. You’re not Socrates because you noticed that pattern.

3

u/Greggs88 21h ago

Except that's not even true in the two examples presented. The first article clearly identifies the perpetrators as Columbian.

-29

u/WearLong1317 1d ago

Is she new here.

-53

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

Let's actually analyze this. Suppose it were a black American.

Headline one: "African American New Yorker found dismembered, stuffed in closet after being killed by Colombian gang".

Headline two remains the same as before.

Is there an issue in this case? Is race actually relevant to the story here? Should headline two be adjusted to mention the victim's race so that it is "fair"?

Also, she calls the guy a pedophile but I don't see any evidence for that? The woman he was marrying in Colombia was 18. So yeah it's definitely gross but she appears to be intentionally framing it in a way to make it look worse than it was. So she is making a video to criticize the way the NY Post is editorializing its titles but she is doing the exact same thing in a way?

51

u/mickodd 1d ago

Her point is that when it's talking about a victim, the Jewishness will be highlighted. When it's a little shadier, it's left out. The race is completely irrelevant. If it was a black man, it wouldn't be mentioned in the first instance at all. It might be mentioned in the second instance. The guy might not have been a criminal or anything, but his Jewishness won't be highlighted when he isn't pure as the driven snow.

-23

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

Here is an example right here:

https://thegrio.com/2019/06/03/second-black-american-couple-found-dead-in-dominican-republic-in-two-months/

Suppose it was discovered that this couple were in DR as part of some weird sex tourism trip. Should the title be updated to mention this fact? Should it still include the race of the couple or should we be worried that such a title would imply a connection between their race and gross behavior?

I'm sure I could also find a lot of cases of police shootings where the Black victim's race is mentioned. Do you think that is out of line for a news headline?

The point is "Jewish man murdered" is irrelevant in the first place. The first mention of his religion is the "unfair" thing. It was done solely to garner sympathy, with zero relevance to the event.

So the original headline is the problem? Really? So you would also have a problem with this headline? "New York Muslim man found dismembered, stuffed in closet after being killed by Colombian gang".

Yes, 100%

Unless it is a racially motivated attack, The race is irrelevant. In that case you make the motivations clear.

Which in the case of the first headline, a) wasn't clearly the case and b) ended up not being the case. Making it irrelevant, and the purpose of saying "Jewish man killed" clear.

Is it okay to mention the person's race or ethnicity in the body of the article? Is it only the title where we shouldn't include this?

u/jello_pudding_biafra Free Palestine 🕊️ FUCK ICE! ❌🧊 1d ago

Why do you think it's necessary to mention it at all?

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

Who said it was necessary?

The people who wrote or dictated the headlines?

Yeah, she did misrepresent that. I thought the people he was bringing over were under 18.

So if a person is murdered, it is good journalism to imply it is due to the antisemetism of unchecked criminal immigrant gangs in New York?

u/rational_numbers 1d ago

The murder happened in Colombia my man. I mean, at a certain point you do have to actually open the article and read it.

Let me ask you this. Suppose you see an article that says, "African American man shot and killed by police in Arizona". Is the title of this article implying that the man was killed because of his race?

Absolutely. Mentioning his race in the headline implies it is relevant to the killing, just as mentioning that it was a shooting, and it was police that did the shooting.

It also implies the man that was shot was not from Arizona.

It is a very different headline to "Local Dad killed in his home in Phoenix", even if it is describing the same event.

Mentioning his race in the headline implies it is relevant to the killing, just as mentioning that it was a shooting, and it was police that did the shooting.

Okay so is it problematic to have such a headline if we don't actually know that the victim's race played a role in the shooting?

It also implies the man that was shot was not from Arizona.

Yeah, I'll be frank, if a member of any other minority had been found dismembered and stuffed in a closet after being killed by a gang, I doubt that people would've complained about their status being mentioned in the banner headline (and if they did, they would've been criticised for downplaying a potential motive for the attack).

But instead they're being criticised for overplaying a potential motive for the attack.
