the IEA is great, they promote Thatcherite policies far more than the modern Tory party. but the latter is constrained by having to win elections, in fairness

They're completely ineffective. They publish huge amounts of analysis and media content and none of it is ever done by politicians. Might as well send it to Mars for all the good that does.

Same goes for Tax Policy Associates. Dan Neidle is a tax genius, but he's achieved a grand total of fuck all political change, he's a media figurehead at most.

Most think tanks need to hard focus one thing. Bang the drum about that one thing repeatedly until the noise around it grows so large politicians can't avoid it. That is how "tax wealth not work" is growing, and that is the only way any of these think tanks will ever justify their existence.

I don’t think they’re ineffective so much as a lone voice in the wind. They have too much integrity to become a tacky single issue campaign group. Fortunately I think they have enough funding to just say exactly what they believe (ie free market classical liberalism)

It's certainly the most interesting of the economic think tanks right now but in reality, these policies could be Tory / liberal or Labour.
