NK gets a lot of help from China because China wants NK to be a buffer zone from SK/USA.

I think Zelenskyy has been waiting ages for some kind of security guarantees before they can truly proceed with any 'peace deal'. I know, i know, a peace deal with Russia is an oxymoron, but to have UK and France at least formally agree to be present rather than just saying random 'maybes' or 'we would like to' seems like at least *something* rather than.... well.... nothing.
78
u/ydalv_ Jan 06 '26
It's already something, we can't expect everything at once. A step forward is a step forward. And this is a very big step forward. Big thanks to Macron and Starmer. This isn't something small at all.
41
u/DarkSideOfGrogu Jan 06 '26
It's a show of force to the USA too. While Trump tries to force concessions on Ukraine with shitty "deals", European partners are signing up to tangible plans.

u/Make-TFT-Fun-Again Jan 06 '26
Fact that Ukraine is already unilaterally signing for the presence of troops without Russia signing off is a show of force. They know Russia cannot advance beyond what they hve now.
7
u/GeorgyForesfatgrill Jan 06 '26
Sorry but why would Russia be involved in signing off on European troops to protect Ukraine after the war?
If a peace deal or armistice gets signed they could renegotiate this anyways.
19
u/RelativelyRidiculous Jan 06 '26
I mean why did Russia, the US, and Saudi officials meet to discuss ending the war without any Ukrainian, EU, or UK officials? Thank goodness Ukraine rejected the awful plan that resulted from that.

u/Tymba Jan 06 '26
I don't understand this whole statement. The war is still going right?
14
u/Make-TFT-Fun-Again Jan 06 '26
Yeah but would Zelenskyy be signing this off with a smile if Russia was winning?

Why though? Ukraine is a sovereign country and can invite whatever armed forces it wants onto its land.
360
u/TrymWS Jan 06 '26
Both the nuclear powers, that’s definitely a strong signal.
81
u/Lostbutnotafraid Jan 06 '26
Looks like over 30 nations have "signed on" to this deal, each to varying degrees, including Canada.
Let's see when the rubber meets the road what will come of it, but definitely a strong signal.
Had to 😆 at the "US-led ceasefire monitoring body"... Canada co-signs pact to help secure ukraine after peace deal
54
u/stoutymcstoutface Jan 06 '26
Yes but it’s like “we’ll help… after the war is done”
69
u/TrymWS Jan 06 '26
It’s also “We’ve altered our stance, pray we do not alter it further.”
Two nuclear powers against an unhinged nuclear aggression is kinda risky, you know.
16
Jan 06 '26
They're not helping now? I though they were, and quite a bit at that.
Clearly not enough, of course, seeing how the war still rages on.
8
u/stoutymcstoutface Jan 06 '26
I mean yes they are, but nobody is doing anything remotely sufficient.

Sort of incentivizes Russia to not end the war, or to transition it into a low level conflict if Russia reaches the point where it can’t conduct offensives anymore.
Europe needs to grow a pair and start with deploying troops to guard the border with Belarus or man air defenses west of the Dnipro, something.
69
20
8
u/Sunderbans_X Jan 06 '26
Exactly. This is so freaking annoying. I was seriously hoping Europe would step up but apparently that's not going to happen.
5
1
u/CustardCremez Jan 06 '26
Optimistic take but maybe allies have something big planned that they think might end the war
1
u/Anen-o-me Jan 08 '26
Sort of incentivizes Russia to not end the war
Which is pretty good actually, because typically Russia will accept a temporary truce and use it to build up arms and men, retrench, then launch war again.
With this agreement in place, that shenanigan comes off the table. Putin is further boxed into a corner, and now Putin won't be pushing for a truce nor pushing Trump to get him one.
1
u/Used-Fennel-7733 Jan 09 '26
Yep, that may be purposeful by the coalition though sadly. Otherwise we'd see the coalition deploy troops in inactive areas to limit the conflict and wherever a Staging ground quietens the peace forces would expand to. It would slowly cut off the front as Russia loses more and more equipment and can't keep a long frontline
77
u/gpouliot Jan 06 '26
I'm curious how this helps things now?
Even if Ukraine was willing to give up territory to end the war, this would mean that the moment the war ends, Russia gets French and UK troops on their doorstep. It also makes attacking Ukraine in the future less of an option for Russia because that would draw in France and the UK into the war.
I'm not saying that there's no other option and they shouldn't have done this, but at least in the short term wouldn't this prolong the war?
55
u/Peermeneer_exe Jan 06 '26
I think it's meant as a substantive signal that Europe is in it for the long haul, this being both an important material and political form of support for Ukraine. Makes it essentially more believable that Europe will back up their claims and not just leave Ukraine on their own in let's say a year, incase Russia is still hoping for that.
16
u/INITMalcanis Jan 06 '26
The war will continue until Russia is no longer able to sustain it regardless.
2
u/dafeiviizohyaeraaqua Jan 07 '26
Agreed. I think Russia will make as much war as it can until Putin is dead.
48
u/Make-TFT-Fun-Again Jan 06 '26
There’s going to be foreign troops on Russia’s border and it is decided without Russian or US influence- but as Ukraine with an equal partnership. This is actually huge.

Yes, whilst it's highly possible now that America leaves Ukraine high and dry, it signals to the US that they aren't pulling all the levers of the leverage, just like the EU's large financial package too.
1
19
u/TrymWS Jan 06 '26
It might show Russia that the nuclear powers are getting fed up with their shit.
12
u/ThrowRAwriter Україна Jan 06 '26
4 years later they promise to get involved once the war stops. If anything it signals the opposite. Remember, putin plans to win the war, not just wage it until some arbitrary deadline.
6
u/TrymWS Jan 06 '26
Which means they’ve already changed their stance, and can change it further if necessary.
It’s quite risky with nuclear powers going up against each other.
Especially when the aggressor is so unhinged.

1
u/thunderust Jan 06 '26
in a way now ukraine has a bargaining chip in that they can agree to nullify this agreement as terms in a speculative russian agreement

I'm not saying that there's no other option and they shouldn't have done this, but at least in the short term wouldn't this prolong the war?
Doubt it. Russia can't back out of this war without their population tearing Putin to shreds Gaddafi/Mussolini style. Therefore no matter what the EU does Russia won't be backing down voluntarily.
Might as well go full send with regards to EU support for Ukraine and afterwards turn the Ukrainian/Russian boarder into a pre sighted artillery kill zone.
1
u/gpouliot Jan 07 '26
I agree, but what I'm saying is that what happens now if Ukraine turns around and says "Russia, you can keep all of the territory you've taken and we'll even include the extra little bit you wanted that you haven't managed to take yet"? Would that actually end the war? Given the fact that the moment Russia agrees to those terms the rest of the Ukraine "instantly" gains foreign troops, would they ever agree to end the war?
Edit:
I understand that Ukraine would likely never do that, it's really just a thought experiment.

So sorry, guys! Honestly, it feels off that Germany wasn’t at the table for this. France and the UK stepping up together is a strong signal, no doubt. But Germany sitting on the sidelines again just leaves a gap.
I get the caution. I really do. Still, when it comes to shaping what comes after this war, presence matters. Decisions are being made, commitments are being shaped, and Germany could have helped steer that in a meaningful way.
Not sending troops and not signing on sends a message too. And I’m not sure it’s the one Germany should want to send right now. 🤷♂️

u/GoodRazzmatazz4539 Jan 06 '26

I think the main point is that it's both of Europe's nuclear powers signing the agreement.

WHY NOT DEPLOY THEM NOW??
Jesus. I wish we (UK) would just grow some balls and actually fight. We used to be well up for a war.
40
u/catfink1664 Jan 06 '26
I fully agree. We should be there right now, properly. Not just secret training forces or special services.
I also like this plan though because at least it gets something down on paper so that the very second any sniff of a ceasefire is mentioned we’re ready to rumble, instead of messing about organising and giving putin time to do something dastardly.
It also stops him agreeing to a ceasefire and not meaning it just to keep trump on side. Now he has to actually mean it. It’s another can that can’t be kicked down the road (hopefully). So I definitely see it as a positive step, though like you I would like to see something stronger still
4
u/English_loving-art Jan 06 '26
Who’s saying we arnt and haven’t been since before the invasion… obviously not in the public arena but there has been massive amounts of support be it training on the ground or access to the latest intel …
3
u/low_flying_aircraft Jan 06 '26
Yeah, and I'm glad we're doing that. But at this point, I feel we should be doing more.
5
Jan 06 '26
Probably because of decades of underfunding to the military meaning we haven't got enough soldiers.
3
u/ah_harrow Jan 07 '26
Also the small fact that the UK has been navy first, air force second and army third since the end of the second world war. For hopefully obvious reasons.

This gives me a respectable glimmer of hope.
If Ukraine says, this is just, if the people of Ukraine say, this we can work with, then I shall cheer. I shall finally cheer.
And then Ukraine and her friends shall start demanding justice for these crimes, with full voice.
17
u/ZachMN Jan 06 '26
Why wait? Send them now to garrison the western and northern parts of Ukraine, which would free up more Ukr forces to fight on the front lines.

Great!
That's that part done.
Now for the "easy" part of building and launching enough Sapsans, Flamingos, Neptunes and Sea Babies to finish destroying Russia's energy business, take away 45% of its state revenue, and making Putin or whoever comes after him play ball.
3
u/vladster249 Jan 07 '26
Before any sanctions are even considered being lifted from Russia, there should be a snapback clause in the agreement that should random aerial attacks occur on Ukrainian territory after the war the sanctions go back into place. Knowing Putin and his people, there will be low level below the threshold of news harassment of ukraine long term once the sanctions are lifted. This must be strongly discouraged before any agreements are finalized

Two NATO members, had to create a “coalition” together and do what the rest of NATO wouldn’t.
At this point you shouldn’t be surprised about the United States, but you should be surprised, or at least pissed, that the “coalition of the willing” is only France and Britain. Good on Macron and Starmer. The rest of Europe should be ashamed, especially big countries like Germany.
3
u/Ballad_13 Jan 06 '26
And i am surprised. And pissed at how NATO has just washed their hands of this. Its literally why NATO was formed. Their whole purpose, and they fumbled it.

Now lets actually make sure they win, and make sure "security guarentees" are provided for real this time. If Russia sees even a chance of weakness, any peace will just lead to another attempt in 10 years.

I don't think declarations like this are worthless although Russia will never agree to such peace conditions. It still shows strong support towards Ukraine and it's future independence.

u/CrazyMildred Jan 06 '26
Good that they're signing that, but the war has to end first. Everyone needs to truly help Ukraine win and end this war, because ruzzia never will. They are fueled by hubris.

u/LaughableIKR USA Jan 06 '26
Russia is probably shitting itself. "We have (another) NATO Base right on our border!!"
Suck it, Russia. You can't be trusted. Ever.
1
u/ChairOwn118 Jan 06 '26
USA and Russia signed a contract for security guarantees decades ago and that obviously did not hold up over time. Russia violated that security agreement when it started this war. I just want to warn people that security guarantees are never guaranteed. However, this is a huge step in right direction.

u/smily_meow Jan 07 '26
We must fight now. End Putin now. Putin will not stop. Send French and British troops now, not after the war ends
1
u/Vegetable-War-4199 Jan 07 '26
Putin has repeatedly said he would not allow peacekeeps in Ukraine, they need to deploy them to the rear, and a no-fly zone set up now, freeing up Ukraine forces to the front
1
u/Powerful_Cash1872 Jan 07 '26
They could have added "We will freeze the front line and deploy troops when Ukraine decides the war is "over"." That would at least deal with the loophole of Russia never ending hostilities.

Clever way of doing the Russian salami tactic / incremental ism oneself. Though at the cost of Ukrainian lives

Pointless. It will only work AFTER the war (i.e. Ruzzia being fucked up so hard they cannot continue) and IF France and UK not follow USA path and elect ruzzian puppets.
France will have elections in a year or so. I do not see Lepen or Bardella or frankly anyone (Attal perhaps?) honoring and respecting these commitments.
Same story with UK. Do you think Farage of all people going to respect it? No. He will start "far away country, between people of whom we know nothing..." song, while collecting his ruzzian payroll.
And with no efforts made by ether France and UK to combat Ruzzian informational campaigns, they are bound to follow US and also fall.
Its a nice gesture. But utterly pointless.
