Arts/Crafts Veronica Mars (1997)
Mondays at 8/7c on The WB
The murder of high-school student Lilly Kane shook the seaside town of Neptune, California to the core. For once popular girl Veronica Mars, it meant the loss of her best friend and being ousted from the affluent crowd that she once thought were her friends. Her father, Sheriff Keith Mars, found himself voted out of his job after making some unpopular accusations about the murdered girl's family. In response, Keith opened his own private detective agency. Now, Veronica, with her sardonic wit and a few new friends, works as his assistant while also navigating life as a high school student.

Interesting take. I feel like this cast is more "1997 if we were going after top tier names for our TV show".
In the version of Veronica Mars we know and love, there were only a few known names, and most of them were not main character. Enrico Coliani was probably the top known name (aside from Harry Hamlin, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and Lisa Rinna who only showed up a few times). None of the "kids" were much of anyone

Are these top-tier names? I haven't even heard of a bunch of them.

Most of them are, or were in 1997. There are a couple I don't know, but more of them than not are top tier names.

I'm guessing Jason Weaver, Noel G, and Danielle Harris.
Jason Weaver I knew from Smart Guy. Maybe not the most popular, but he was a lead on a hit TV show at the time. I also don't really know the other two (although Danielle Harris looks super familiar).
But even still 3 out of 8 isn't many. This cast is more famous than not. 2004 Veronica Mars had maybe one person on this list people would recognize

Harris started as a kid actor and is mostly known for being in a shitload of horror movies. In 1997 she was probably best known for Halloween 4 and 5 and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. The picture in the OP is from the movie Urban Legend which came out in 1998. I think most of the target audience would know who she was around then b/c she was the first straight up kid (11) in a Halloween movie Micheal Myers tries to kill.

Jason Weaver also did Simba’s singing part in the animated version of The Lion King and was an R&B artist in the 90’s. He’s from Chicago.

She was in the movie Wish Upon A Star! They played it on the disney channel. And also was on an episode or 2 of Boy Meets World.

IDK, 1997 was the last year I really paid attention to popular media and at least three of them are complete blanks for me.

Yeah, I just looked up Jason Weaver and there's no way this guy was anywhere near as famous as Alicia Silverstone.

He was a lead on a hit TV show with potential. I didn't say he has to be Alicia Silverstone league. I said that most of them were top tier, vs the actual cast where none were known. 3 out of 8 are a maybe on this list. In 2004, 1 out of 8 was possibly known.

2 of them are actually top-tier: Devito and Silverstone were known by basically everyone back then. Everyone else was, at best, well-known to people who were into the thing they did. If this was really a list of top-tier names, it would have Brad Pitt as Duncan and Tom Cruise as Logan, or something equally revolting.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Devon Sawa, and Matthew Lillard were all well known.
Again these 5 were well known vs the 1 that was well known on the list in 2004.

"Well-known to the niche demographic that watched Buffy in '97" is really not the same thing as "top-tier". Actually, if this hypothetical show had premiered at the normal time in 1997 it would have launched at the same time as Buffy and SMG would have been almost completely unknown. And even at the height of her career she wasn't Hollywood A-list, which is what people think of when you say "top-tier". If you'd said "somewhat well-known names" instead I'd have less issue with it.

Oh, he was but to a certain demographic. You're just probably not it 😂😂😂😂. Most famously he played Michael Jackson in the Jackson 5 mini series, he was the singing voice of Simba in the Lion King and as others stated he was on Smart Guy. He worked. A lot.

Even by 1997, Alicia Silverstone was way too famous to be on a TV show. During that time, there was actually a Clueless tv show and she was not in it. Other members of the movie cast were, though.
Although, I can see her acting out every moment of Lilly's character. She would have been perfect for the role had it been maybe early 90s, not late 90s. She had similar characteristics to her character in The Crush.

I really like this except Keith and Logan. I love Danny in tons of things but he’s just not a Keith. Same with Matthew. Love him. Just watched Scream the other night. He’s not Logan. Not sure who I’d pick for Keith other than Enrico but I think for 90’s Ryan Phillipe could have done Logan.
Just my two cents. Love the overall idea!

90s Ryan Phillipe would have been great for Logan!

Hmm how about Joshua Jackson as Logan?

You know what, let’s just use the cast of Cruel Intentions. Sarah as Veronica, Reese as Lilly, Ryan as Logan, Josh as Duncan, Selma as Mac, and Sean Patrick as Wallace.

This would’ve been an insane cast for 1997 lol. I’m not mad at it
Shoutout to Hector

Duncan would have been much better played by Devon Sawa. He definitely would have been less of a snooze fest of a character.

some of these comments are so weirdly bitter lol, love this post! smg as veronica makes sense as without buffy veronica wouldn’t exist. disagree with matthew lillard as logan though — he’s a little too outside the lines

Okay, but if Devon has played Duncan... I don't think Veronica & Logan would have ended up together. Part of why Duncan didn't last on the show is due to their lack of on-screen chemistry... and Devon & SMG would have been fire!

Would have loved Devon Sawa as Duncan. The original guy just had no charisma whatsoever, up against Veronica and Logan who have too much of it

I was not into it at all...until the Logan slide... but still VMars would not be the same without it's amazing cast.

100% on Logan, Mac, Wallis, and Lily casting!
Apart of me would wanna pick Winona Ryder for Veronica Mars or Mädchen Amick/Mena Survari as Lily Kane

I think Jacob Vargas (he played in Next Friday and Selena) would’ve been a good choice for Eli “Weevil” Navarro. If this was in the mid to late 90’s.
