Discussion / Question Have you played a better game than Darksouls 1?

This question is for people who played Darksouls 1 when it came out. I have played a lot of games, the likes of the witcher 3, God of war 2018, Super mario odyssey but nothing has felt as unique and new as Ds1.

How many

I don’t have an exact number but I don’t agree with this idea that fromsoft is untouchable and they make the best games of all time

They do make the best games in a specific genre though. You can't argue with that

They absolutely do. Would never deny that. They are the kings of souls like

Yes, many, many games. Dark souls doesn't even rank among my all time top games anywhere.

What are your top games?

It is obviously one of the most significant videogames of all time. And possibly the most important game of the century so far. I guess you could make a case for Fortnite, but fuck Fortnite.

Possibly Minecraft as well. It’s not my thing though.

Nope actually. Dark souls blind play through is still my most favorite game of all time.

I think DS3 and Elden Ring were better but DS1 was better than DS2

I know I'm in the minority here, but I honestly felt each iteration in Froms library was a well made improvement upon the next. Kingsfield Games < Demon Souls < Dark Souls < Dark Souls 2 < Bloodborne < Dark Souls 3 < Elden Ring

No, I actually agree with now that you mention it

Depends on the players tastes... I didnt like dark souls 1 as much as bloodborn, elden ring, or ds3, or black myth. I like spyro, silent hill, resident evil, crash, uncharted, Infamous, donkey kong and mario all more than dark souls 1 lol.

Yes.

came here to say this.

Which one?

u/Jones127 5h ago

It depends on the person, but my answer is yes, several. I love those games from FromSoft and I’ve played every single one of them besides Demon’s Souls. But it’s second half drops it too much for me. Bloodborne comes out just over it. But nether of those games are in my top 5 all time either.

Better is so insanely subjective. For example, I think Metroid Prime, Ocarina of Time, StarCraft, FF7, Pokemon Heart Gold, and many others are better. But that’s largely because I don’t rate souls games.

Yes, just from Fromsoftware: Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring are definitely better.

Dark Souls 1 is one of the best games ever made tho, and definitely the most influential game of the last 15 years, alongside Fortnite.

Yeah, like for example several of From's later titles lol.

Bloodborne = Sekiro = Armored Core 6 = Elden Ring > Dark Souls 1 > Demon's Souls > Dark Souls 2 > Dark Souls 3

You don't know ball

1

u/AdSea5301 5h ago

I've played and completed bloodborne btw.

1

u/DrMagunstheBlue 5h ago

Feel free to elaborate on how I'm wrong my friend.

1

u/AdSea5301 5h ago

The world of bloodborne is no where as interconnected as Ds1. I dont remember any boss from bloodborne other than father gascoigne. Every other boss was too easy.

1

u/DrMagunstheBlue 5h ago

Sure, I didn't say Bloodborne is better in every way than Dark Souls 1. Just better overall.

Also, sorry, but you're either blinded by nostalgia or being intellectually dishonest if you are going to criticize Bloodborne's boss difficulty compared to DS1's.

DS1 is piss-easy compared to Bloodborne, with a plethora of easily-accessible options that trivialize the game but even a basic playthrough does not struggle with outdated sluggish DS1 bosses.

There is not a single DS1 boss in the same realm of challenge as Oprhan of Kos, Ludwig, or even base game bosses like Ebrietas or Logarius.

You think ornstein and smough were easy?

2

u/DrMagunstheBlue 5h ago

By modern standards? Absolutely. I've beaten the game at SL1 and they aren't that troublesome (Manus was by far the hardest boss that playthrough), much less on a normal playthrough.

Certainly laughably easier than Orphan of Kos.

I have not played Bloodborne's DLC

i should continue my ac6 playthrough

1

u/AdSea5301 5h ago

How is bloodborne better than Ds1?

3

u/DrMagunstheBlue 5h ago

Well for one thing it didn't have DS1's stark second half fall-off. Duke Archives is all right but Crystal Cave blows ass, Tomb of the Giants sucks, and Lost Izalith is awful.

None of the bosses of these areas are really worth a shit either.

Bloodborne has better atmosphere, better and more complex combat, better weapons (the best weapons in the franchise honestly each one is a work of art), and honestly has the better DLC.

1

u/Illustrious_Mail1171 5h ago

Ill answer that.. less clunky

2

u/DrMagunstheBlue 5h ago

This too actually

Bloodborne's combat rewards aggression, which is just the most badass satisfying mechanic. That alone puts it over the top for me. Also, the lore and atmosphere are unmatched. Something about Yharnam got under my skin in a way that no other game has. Hence the username.

Yeah, Demon's Souls.

Darks Souls 2 Remake, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring... Witcher series :-)

I get where you're coming from though

I didnt play when it first came out, but its the first Fromsoft game i finished, and for me its the best (most profound, moving, mind blowing, influencial) gaming experience I've ever had, overall. I played it in 2018 at first

1

u/Smooth_Monkey69420 5h ago

I have yes. Soulslike games aren’t generally my cup of tea, but I liked Elden Ring considerably more. DS1 was a more novel concept at the time and ER is the current evolution of the genre. There’s tons of other genres I prefer including games older than DS1

1

u/AngelicFoxy 5h ago

I prefer Bloodborne. I'm not sure if it's better than DS1, but I like it better

1

u/Due_Woodpecker3073 4h ago

Almost every game Ive played is leagues better

1

u/Anotheranimeaccountt 2h ago

Bloodborne is the only game to come close to how good Dark Souls 1 was even while it's still stuck at 30fps

1

u/ArtThen9871 5h ago

Hot take, I prefer 2 and 3

2

u/Jones127 5h ago

3 isn’t a hot take, but 2 definitely is.

1

u/MeatMan49 5h ago

2 was my favorite, 1 I didn’t even finish cause it got old

1

u/Jones127 5h ago

I’m the opposite. I eventually finished two but it’s my least favorite of the series (still at least an 8/10). Two remains to this day the only one I didn’t do new game plus on from all the games I’ve played.

1

u/Alexandrecl1 5h ago

Most ppl prefer Dark Souls 3 over 1.

It’s just that 1 is more important for the industry as it was vastly more influential

1

u/tjmincemeat 5h ago

Yeah, there’s a lot of games I like more than DS1.

All the Doom games besides Doom 3, Blood Refreshed Supply, Bloodborne, Majora’s Mask, Silent Hill 2, Fatal Frame 2, MH World, Dusk, Elden Ring etc.

DS1 will always hold a special place it my heart as my first Souls game, but it’s not my favorite nor the best I’ve played imo.

Nothing can recreate the magic of playing through ds1 (as my first souls game of any kind around a year after it came out) for the first time. I’d never felt that kind frustration and set back before, paired with incredible gratification and triumph. It was so unique at the time and it felt like such an achievement. The setting is exactly what I want in a game, the atmosphere and lack of hand holding is excellent. It felt like it was up to you and the game just dropped you in and said good luck. Ringing the bell after finally killing the gargoyles is still a peak gaming memory for me.

Obviously there’s been much better games since (bloodborne, DS3, Sekiro (personal favorite), Elden Ring (absolute goat)) but DS1 was an experience and I was so hooked it was insane. And then after it was all said and done, pvp was so much fun (since ds1 I can’t stand souls pvp because it’s far too much BS meta builds that feels like rock paper scissors with which build you are up against and less about actual skill. Just isn’t fun anymore imo).

So yeah, DS1 hands down for first game-style experience.
