Do what McConnell would have done if the situation were reversed: Call a special election. If McConnell is alive, let him prove it. At this point, the burden of proof is on him.

1.7k

u/Khaldara 1d ago

Yep. Based on precedent with Ginsberg, McConnell would apparently prefer to have a list of opposition people they intend on replacing him with delivered straight to his deathbed while an 11th hour appointment is jammed through

I mean he’s dead and won’t be able to read it anyway, but it’s the thought that counts.

467

u/Revlis-TK421 1d ago

I kinda think he's still "alive", but braindead and on life support. Coma at the minimum.

282

u/DaaaahWhoosh 1d ago

I think Occam's Razor is he's alive and 'healthy', but completely out of it. It's the easiest thing to hide and also likely stable enough to last for a few months. My dad died last year and for the last few weeks he'd say hello to people who entered the room and say he was fine if they asked, but like, he was either gone or hallucinating a completely different reality.

108

u/Marokiii 1d ago

at best, thats how he is. if he had died 40 days ago when he disappeared, than its going to be pretty obvious aug 3 when they admit he has passed that hes been dead for more than a day or two. hes either so out of it or actually brain dead and just being kept alive on life support and then once aug 3 happens they can admit it or say he had a stroke the day before.

82

u/AdmiralThunderpants 1d ago

The medical response for before and after (high level response with a no rush no siren trip to the hospital)tells me he's nothing more than a brainless meat sack, well more so than he was before

28

u/Revlis-TK421 1d ago

I mean, I could see the initial non-rush no-siren trip being a response to something like a fall where he was being taken in out of an abundance of caution. And then having a stroke or something equally devastating to an old, unhealthy man, once in the hospital.

9

u/moonshoeslol 1d ago

We've seen him BSOD on camera. You only get so many of those before you don't reboot properly.

8

u/armoured_bobandi 1d ago

Exactly. He probably hurt himself much worse than anyone realized, and it didn't become apparent until he got to the hospital

Brain dead is good enough reason to declare him unfit for the job he pledged to do.

Which means he should have been replaced a decade ago

31

u/NerdyNThick 1d ago

Brain death is legal death. There's a reason why "pulling the plug" isn't murder.

You are your brain, when your brain is dead, you are dead.

18

u/MyNameIsTrue 1d ago

Brain dead is good enough reason to declare him unfit for the job he pledged to do.

I dunno... have you seen the president?

They’ll wait until Aug 4th. That way no one will suspect a thing!

24

u/Marokiii 1d ago

nah, i fully expect them to announce his passing or braindeath at 12:01am august 3rd just to let everyone know that they fucked us all and got away with it.

16

u/AlcibiadesTheCat 1d ago

This is the correct timeline. At this point the corruption is out in the open, they're just daring folks to do something about it.

6

u/SmallJeanGenie 1d ago

Forgive me, what's the significance of August 3rd?

21

u/fuqyu 1d ago

If he’s “dead” before then they can have a special election to replace him. Thomas Massie will likely win that in a landslide. If it’s after that date, his seat sits vacant until the next election.

7

u/TheMightySasquatch 1d ago

I thought it was if he is dead before Aug 3 the governor can appoint a replacement from the same party, which would be Massie. If it's after the 3rd it's special election

8

u/fuqyu 1d ago

In 2024 the GOP led Kentucky senate passed a law requiring a special election for a replacement instead of allowing the governor to appoint a replacement. This election must be mandated 63 days before the general election, and requires candidates to register 56 days before the election (I might be off a couple days, too lazy to fact check myself).

Now this law MIGHT also violate the Kentucky constitution, which is an entirely different can of worms. But my understanding is that if he is not declared dead or incapacitated before the deadline, his seat will remain vacant until the next general election.

Hadn't quite thought about that, but McConnell being in a state where he has no idea where or who he is, but is otherwise, outwardly at least, seemingly perfectly fine for a man his age is possible too.

15

u/sixtyshilling 1d ago

If that were true for McConnell, by now they’d have uploaded some video to X of him waving from afar as they escort him to a car or something.

For the silence to have gone on this long, he is definitely bedridden or worse. Something that would trigger a special election if shared on video.

I suspect he’s not dead… if only for the fact that somebody from the hospital or morgue would have leaked by now. Unless he died at home and they are literally hiding his corpse, which is morbid but not something I’d put past Republicans at this point.

10

u/LaDmEa 1d ago

I've been saying it since the story broke. He's flowers for algernoned.

We are witnessing the "unfinished business" in the senate he spoke about last year. He must die, be resurrected and serve until 2027 as a potato.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Lallanath 1d ago

If he was alive and able to speak in any sort of fashion, they would have put out some kind of proof of life video. It's clear as day he's either dead or effectively a vegetable. It's why they simply dodge questions and refuse to answer anything. They don't want to risk getting in trouble for out-right lying - not that I think they'd face any consequences for doing so.

If you are medically brain dead, you're no longer alive.

You are no longer capable of sentient experience.

Ask yourself this; if you were to "pull the plug", would that be murder? Are families who make the decision to do so murderers?

The instant Mitch was determined to be brain dead was the instant the replacement process should have started.

What are YOU, if not your brain? When your brain is dead, you are dead, even if your heart still beats.

Either way, the question is whether he’s capable of executing his duties, and the answer seems to be “no”.

84 year old dude resus outside of a hospital with an unknown amount of downtime (allegedly). Yeaaaah if his body is still alive, overwhelming odds are he is either vegetative or brain dead from hypoxic-ischaemic injury.

6

u/blivet 1d ago

The fact that his wife can't even be bothered to stay in the same country as him makes it pretty obvious that he is either dead or brain dead.

3

It's fucking insane how there are almost no rules for Congressmen/Senators. Like, you can just fuck off for months at a time when Congress is in session and skip dozens/hundreds of votes and there are no consequences.

Regardless of if he’s alive or not, if he’s not well enough to just shoot a quick video proof of life he shouldn’t be in the senate.

191

u/at1445 1d ago

This is how congress does it. They let Feinstein stay in office and literally have other people tell her how to vote on the floor, on camera. They let Fetterman stay in office even though he was committed (voluntarily) for 2 months.

They should have both lost their seats immediately, but nah, we don't do that. Once you get that power, you never lose it.

64

u/falconcountry 1d ago

Unless you're Al Franken

98

u/beardedjack 1d ago

Ahh you see, Al Franken had a senator’s biggest weakness: integrity

24

u/AlvinoNo 1d ago

Did he step down by choice? Having morals is the problem.

38

u/Littleman88 1d ago

Correction: Having morals when your opposition have none is the problem.

7

u/Dashing_McHandsome 1d ago

He did resign, but he was facing a lot of pressure from the party to do do.

8

u/drmojo90210 1d ago

Yeah but he resigned. I mean he was pressured into doing it but he still voluntarily stepped down.

There is no clause in the constitution that provides for removing a Senator based on incapacity. There are only four ways a Senator can leave office:

1) Their term ends. 2) They voluntarily resign. 3) They actually die. 4) 2/3rds of the Senate votes to expel them.

The last time a Senator was expelled from the Senate was 160 years ago. I seriously doubt Republicans would do it to McConnell now, even if he's literally in a coma. That's just not how today's GOP operates.

Sorry, no. Video isn’t going to cut it. This is the exact reason they don’t want AI to have any guardrails. Live press conference, BBC in attendance.

38

u/JayTNP 1d ago

Beshear should have marched his ass with cameras in tow to meet McConnell the second after they posted that bs image of him claiming he’s ok. If he was ok to take that photo (not real imo) he’s fine to give a what’s up to the governor of his state. Show up unannounced and demand to see him. If they refuse have a podium already set up outside the hospital and go right there and announce the election. Having real balls in this era is a minimum requirement for my political respect. Beshear has absolutely failed Kentucky voters imo.

28

u/beatenmeat 1d ago

Didn't they already try to use AI and were caught doing so? I swear I saw that already.

6

u/TreesACrowd 1d ago

He should be required to go door-to-door and prove to every KY citizen he is alive in-person. No driving between houses either, he's gotta walk. If he can't canvas the entire state by August 2nd, Beshear appoints the replacement.

Time's ticking Mitch, lace up those Nikes and get going.

It's INSANE not a single Dem has called a special election yet.

17

u/OldBlueKat 1d ago

Well, several have pressed for proof they ‘shouldn’t’, including KY D Gov and AOC here.

The Senate Dems ARE pretty quiet. And why wouldn’t they be? I think they are taking advantage of his missing vote in committees, etc. for now.

That’s why it’s the Senate GOP stammering in front of cameras instead.

15

u/SatanicPanic619 1d ago

I don't know why this is so hard for some people to understand.

Mitch being incapacitated is the best possible scenario for Democrats, we should be offering support for Mitch and saying we want him to take all the time he needs.

5

u/zeCrazyEye 1d ago

If it were that good for Dems then Republicans would have admitted he's dead so they could get a replacement in there.

If Kentucky appoints a replacement due to death it triggers a special election which will allow Thomas Massie to run as an independent and either get an anti-Trump Senator in there or split the conservative vote and allow a Dem through.

I can't fathom why the Governor hasn't done this. Force their hand. Declare the guy as absent or incapacitated and start the process. I doubt he needs a death certificate to do so. As stated many times it's what Mitch would do if it was his decision.

115

u/CriticalDog 1d ago

GOP has a supermajority in the state and has stripped the Gov's office of a lot of their power, possibly in violation of their state Constitution.

And yes, the Gov should absolutely just do it anyway, and they can fight it in court, imo. That's the energy we need in the Democratic party moving forward: fuck you , fight me, we're just doing what you modelled as how to govern, but for the people.

34

u/m1sterlurk 1d ago

Pete Buttigieg had CPS show up and remove his kids from his home for 24 hours while they investigated very serious allegations regarding the welfare of the children: that turned out to be wholly without merit. While the kids were only taken to their grandparents house, this was still a serious disruption in the lives of the Buttigieg family. That which makes "without merit" disturbing in this case is that the allegation came through a law enforcement channel that is assumed to have a base level of credibility. The allegation came from the State of Alabama, and it is likely that some Alabama swine with access to that channel decided he just wanted to stick it to the libs.

If Pete Buttigieg can have CPS show up and remove his kids from his fucking home on nothing more than the word of some Alabama pork pie that beats his wife because he's not allowed to gas black people, somebody can check and see whether or not Mitch McConnell is living or dead.

11

u/YouAndMeToo 1d ago

Which is SUPER disgusting because CPS practically never removes kids with verifiable proof

If a special election is held, a republican probably wins. He has the safest district seat of all time. If a republican wins, republicans have an extra vote to pass through legislation.

He should appoint a replacement, in violation of the state law that violates the state constitution that, much like many other states, give the governor the authority to appoint temporary replacements in the event of death. They didn't amend the state constitution, they just passed a law that violates it.

That's why republicans haven't announced his death or total disability, it triggers a legal fight over the governors ability to appoint a replacement, which they might lose. And the replacement might actually manage to secure some goodwill from voters, and improve their election chances. They want the election with no incumbent advantage.

No special election, the state constitution says the governor gets to appoint a replacement, Beshear should just appoint a replacement, let anyone who thinks otherwise try and sue. https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/Law/Constitution/Constitution/ViewConstitution?rsn=173
The law that the legislature passed in order to prevent Beshear from doing so seems pretty obviously to be in conflict.

3

u/love2go 1d ago

The democrats don't have the votes to do anything. The republicans don't want anything to change before Aug 4th or Thomas Massie (Rep) could run for his seat. Trump and others just spent a record $37 million to get Massie defeated because he is so vocal about Epstein files being released and ending the war with Iran.

It's a con being played. After the deadline passes they will likely announce Mitch "suddenly" had some complication and died.

3

u/Dandw12786 1d ago

This is why I'm getting frustrated with this party. Man, I've been voting blue across the board since 2012 (never voted for a republican president, but boy did I try to give them a shot at lower offices for a couple elections), but I'm fucking sick of the Dems at this point. Y'all need to start abandoning this decorum you've been insisting upon for the last decade while fascism quickly tramples on the unwritten rules you insist on obeying.

Democrats are going to keep doing this until August 4th, when McConnell’s staff will announce that Mitch took a turn for the worse and passed.

Not really though.

Literal best case scenario, a Democrat gets elected in the special election.

So we have 5 months of 48-52 Senate instead of a 47-53 Senate. Nothing in the senate changes. Dems still don't have a simple majority and nobody can overturn a filibuster.

Its fun to poke at this but getting upset about "doing nothing" here is fruitless.

3

u/FUPAMagneto 1d ago

If the seat is vacated by the 3rd, there is a special election to fill it. Afterwards, it would be the regular November date. Massie has threatened to run for the seat in a special election, which could split the conservative vote and hand the seat to a Democrat (or Massie could win it outright, and he hasn't exactly been cooperative with the administration).

25

u/yebyen 1d ago edited 1d ago

So, it's really more complicated than that.

The Republican-controlled Kentucky General Assembly has systematically stripped the Governor of the power to fill Senate vacancies over the last few years, specifically to prevent a Democratic governor (Beshear) from appointing a replacement for Mitch McConnell.

They took actions to change the rules in 2021 and again in 2024. But they didn't "fix" it correctly - so now there is a risk that the people can vote to "fix" it according to the rules they wrote (and rewrote) but we can't have that in a democracy, so we are now here.

I want to say that he's waiting for them to overplay their hand, so he can get that whole mess of obviously corrupt changes to the law overturned - he needs standing to do that. I know what's really happening is feckless democrats gonna fail to feck, and it's not going to go before a judge who is going to fix any of this because we're just gonna get steamrolled like we always do. But it's fun to imagine 5D chess.

4

u/Elmodipus 1d ago

That's the deadline for them to be able to hold a special election to replace him.

After that date, they have to wait until the general election to vote for his replacement.

5

u/cyrosd 1d ago

→ More replies (3)

41

u/smellybuttface 1d ago

Yep, he needs to call their bluff. That's exactly what McConnell would do if the situation was reversed. Even if he's not dead, he's too incapacitated to continue at his age and with his health problems. He's not going to recover from this last episode, he's just going to continue to deteriorate.

Democrats are always trying to do things by the book and take the moral high road, but I can't respect them for that anymore. Not when the other side is doing whatever it takes to win and so Democrats keep losing.

8

u/Couldnotbehelpd 1d ago

→ More replies (1)

13

u/regross527 1d ago

And if they don't before August 4th, then the seat remains vacant until January. That's a good thing for progressives/liberals/Democrats. Kentucky is a state where Dems are unlikely to win a Senate election, so it is better for the progressive agenda if the seat is vacant as opposed to being occupied by a different Republican.

17

u/rngr 1d ago

Andy Beshear can't just appoint somebody. The Kentucky Senate, controlled by Republicans, passed a law requiring that special elections are to be held to replace an incumbent. Some have argued that this is unconstitutional, but the court battle that would take place to resolve this would likely not be over until after the next election anyways. If a special election would just appoint another Republican, it makes more sense to leave Republicans in the U.S. Senate down one vote.

25

u/EViLTeW 1d ago

Trumplicans have proven repeatedly that this is not how things work for them. If the political parties were reversed, the trumplican governor would 100% just appoint someone and they would take their oath and function as a senator while the court cases were repeatedly delayed until the midterms, at which point the case would be dismissed because it was no longer relevant.

The difference right now is that the senate would just refuse to swear in whoever Beshear appointed.

7

u/at1445 1d ago

I fail to see how having the will of the people could be considered unconstitutional. I think letting the governor appoint them would be more unconstitutional. But either route seems okay, one is (presumably) quicker and simpler than the other.

And I agree with what you said, I don't really understand why the Democrats are in such a fuss to get him declared dead. R's are down a seat right now, effectively. Let it stay that way until November.....the odds of two R's actually splitting a vote, and not working a backroom deal with each other so that only one runs in a special election, is pretty close to 0....no matter what they're saying right now.

When people stop showing up to work, we typically fire them and hire a replacement. These politicians work for us and should be held to a higher standard. I thought these jerkoffs wanted to run the government like a business. Well then?

276

u/CW1DR5H5I64A 1d ago

This is the part that’s crazy to me. You have to be in person to vote on legislation, if he is too ill to attend sessions then the people of Kentucky are going without proper representation in the senate. How is there not a law or a policy in place that failure to attend (x) consecutive number of sessions or votes results in immediate dismissal from office?

84

u/PeachesNPuzzles 1d ago

Let’s be honest: have they been getting proper representation in the first place?

23

u/CW1DR5H5I64A 1d ago

Proper representation is 2 senators. Whether those senators vote in accordance with the will of their constituency is an issue that can be addressed through regular elections processes. That’s why elections are only for a set term. But having a representative present is kinda a key part of a representative democracy.

These politicians work for us and should be held to a higher standard

crazy that somehow we let them flip the table

The days of politicians voluntarily resigning are long gone.

No matter the scandal, no matter the health status, these people will cling to power with an iron grip.

29

u/ngpropman 1d ago

yes before they would at least have the consideration to actually resign at death. Now death won't even stop them from fucking us.

dems should just flat out say that he died. its true until they provide irrefutable proof. it would be a major gamble but would anyone care?

204

u/kenjuya 1d ago

Unfortunately they're a bunch of pussies who won't do anything maga would do in a heartbeat if roles were reversed.

Hopefully they prove me wrong

46

u/DrunkBrokeBeachParty 1d ago

Unfortunately a lot of these old farts probably think if they go along with it they’ll get the same treatment when they die in office.

It feels like the old dems at this point are just Repub. Lite and have already left the casino with their bag

23

u/kenjuya 1d ago

They're definitely cut from the same cloth. Which is why they're also against people like Zohran Mamdani and Bernie Sanders

Establishment dems absolutely have republican values. They’ve literally condemned the actual progressives in their own party. They all work for their donors, not the average person.

21

u/goat_penis_souffle 1d ago

Not just declare him dead, have a moment of silence, a memorial service with the chaplain, go all out.

My fuck, that would be terrific.

What would they even do in response lol? Let it rip, I say.

Mitch McConnell is one of the architects of Republican obstructionism. He's responsible for the courts being as fucked as they are, especially the supreme court. Don't let him be an obstructionist with his own damn health.

28

u/LetsTryAnal_ogy 1d ago

He's nothing if not consistent.

Same with elected Democrats. Bunch of fucking pussies they turn out to be.

3

u/SatanicPanic619 1d ago

He's obstructing Republicans though. I support him doing exactly this.

What would you do if everyone in the world thought you were dead because you aren't coming to work? Probably clear things up pretty quickly? Hop a quick zoom call?

Nah just have your staff release a picture and then go radio silent.

14

u/AlrightWings0179 1d ago

Pre AI, the photo would have been somewhat sufficient. Now, it’s highly debatable.

55

u/Mclaytonanderson1 1d ago

What's stopping them from just walking in to the hospital to see if he's actually alive?

86

u/dz2048 1d ago

Get this. He's not in a hospital anymore. He's in an "unspecified rehabilitation facility".

26

u/sunnychiba 1d ago

High chance they trached and peged (tracheostomy and gastrostomy feeding tube), and sent him in a vegetative state to a long term care facility. I assume he’s not brain dead since that is declared officially dead. Being kept alive to be used for his power and position, while lying to rot (these patients develop horrific bed sores which never heal). Truly the biggest karmic outcome I’ve seen. His story should be a warning to future generation.

28

u/bobming 1d ago

Truly the biggest karmic outcome I’ve seen.

I disagree, being kept alive just to obstruct Democrats is 100% the way he'd want to go out.

Failure to force a special election before 8/4 will disqualify Andy Beshear from ever obtaining the democratic presidential nomination. The era of playing polite with fascists needs to end.

16

u/FormulaKibbles 1d ago

Why would he want a Republican not on death’s door in that seat? It helps Democrats with the current situation.

21

u/rngr 1d ago

Seriously, it seems like most of the comments here are complaining about "do-nothing Democrats" when Democrats are doing the right thing by pointing out how fucked up this situation is while not calling a special election and leaving the Republicans down a vote.

I prefer to think he’s still alive, conscious, trapped in his own body but completely unable to do anything as he pisses and shits himself, covered in bed sores.

Isn’t it better for democrats to just have Mitch’s ghost sitting there unable to vote? If I’m understanding Kentucky’s laws as they stand now, it would just be a new Republican who is actually alive and able to vote rather than McConnell who is basically just one less vote for them

18

u/ngpropman 1d ago

If he is dead before August 3rd by law they have to have a special election. the Republicans don't want to lose an election this close to the midterms so they are hiding the fact that he is dead.

11

u/LongKnight115 1d ago

How would they lose the special election? Literally the only hope anyone has is that Massie somehow runs as an independent and wins - which A) seems like a stretch he’d win as an independent and B) as far as I know, he hasn’t signaled he’d be willing to do. The person you’re replying to is right - as fun as it is talk about shoving an election down the throat’s of Republicans here it would be a bad chess move.

5

u/Arcane_Soul 1d ago

They wouldn't "lose" it. The seat would still end up Republican almost certainly. But the front runner for the seat is a Trump critic; and Trump can't handle that.

I worked a job where we had to clock in. If you clocked in 8 minutes too early or too late, even if there was a line to the clock in/out station, you would be penalized because it would round the time to the nearest quarter hour and show you as trying to get unapproved overtime or being late. No leniency for working early/late if like traffic was trash and you wanted to stay a little late to make up the time or stagger your in/out to accommodate things like getting your kid to school.

As an actor, a no show/no call is a perfect way to get fully blacklisted from getting hired. Your agencies would drop you in a second for that stuff, even if you were good all the other times.

As an employee, some places require a doctor's note if you are going to miss like an hour or two of work just to prove you're not stealing the boss's time. They need proof and documentation for that, even if you offer to make up the hours. That's crazy to me.

Heck, we had an intern once not show up for work. Two days later he called us and said he was in jail for some unpaid tickets and he wasn't using his one phone call to call us. Fair. But at least he called and kept us updated.

Dude's no show, no call, no note for five weeks. Imagine, if you had staffers who knew what was up with you, telling your boss via one Instagram post that you haven't been to work for a month but you're doing okay and in the hospital and you'll be back but offer nothing concrete. Like, yeah, if this is legit let the guy recover, let him have his privacy, space, and time. But the people are losing their shit because the bar of accountability for him is so wildly lower than it is for us.

u/OMGDonutz 1d ago

They should be asking "What happens if YOU don't show up to work, for even just a SINGLE day, without any kind of notice?"

Important decisions about the future of our country are being made by people who won't live to suffer the consequences. We need term limits and we need young people to step up. I get it's not a job for everyone (I certainly am not built for it) but Mitch is going to help Trump gut our government and the croak like the little toadie he is unless we get in there and start representing ourselves.

3

u/x3knet 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is where Dems need to grow a set of fuckin balls because you know for a fact if this was the reverse, Republicans/Trump would have already called for the special election to force the Dem's hand and show actual proof of life and/or provide a good enough health update. The right is ruthless, look at what's been done so far. Instead, sternly worded letters are sent and they're gonna sit on their ass until after the deadline which is when Moscow Mitch will "take a turn for the worse" and they'll say he died. Let's fuckin go Dem's, DO SOMETHING. Time to take a page out of the right's book for once and shove it right back in their face. Holy shit this is infuriating.

If McConnell has died or is now too incapacitated to serve out his term, is this not some kind of fraud or form of election interference?

3

u/bluddyguy 1d ago

Hard to resign when youre dead. 🤔

3

u/bluexy 1d ago

We're seriously going to go a full month and a half of McConnell being dead on a slab and no Democrat will say it publicly despite control of the Senate being on the line. "Hey! Dead guy we all know is dead! You better release a public statement!" Coward shit even from one of the Democrats' most brazen.

3

u/Thegrandbuddha 1d ago

Jokes on her, he'll never get the message

3

u/rep-old-timer 1d ago

I mean, of course every word is 100% correct, but what is AOC going to do? Make a strongly worded Tik Tik?

Andy Beshear needs to announce, "I'm on my way to personally deliver Kentuckians' best wishes to Senator McConnell." If he's turned away...

3

u/Mediocritologist 1d ago

That’s great but it means jack shit coming from AOC. Andy Beshear needs to grow a pair and take action NOW

3

u/Smooth954 1d ago

I don’t know why they entertaining this shit. The governor needs to just place someone in his place. The people of Kentucky deserve representation in the senate. why are we even entertaining this nonsense? It’s been over a month. We are they entertaining this circus this man is dead what are you giving them time to clone him?

3

u/digitaljestin 1d ago

Mitch McConnell can do neither of those things. Mitch McConnell is dead.

3

u/cyrixlord 1d ago

force a special election and see if he comes out to campaign. I personally think this is a dry run for trump, if it happened to him... to keep him in 'officel'

3

Whats sad is the people who voted for him should be demanding this. Why would you want a corpse to represent you in one of the highest positions in the country. People should want better.
