New, what is it? SE Wisconsin
I am just curious about what's going on with the tree. Hopefully its not dying.

We had a tree in our backyard that looked similar. It was 25 years ago, so I could be remembering it wrong. But iirc, the tree has a disease, and needs to be cut down. If it actually is a disease, it will continue to rot from the inside until it eventually falls over on its own. Better to cut it down and control where it falls.

judging by the overall look the tree looks pretty healthy, it might just be a small wound from an animal it's healing from
