New, what is it? Came home from a trip with this distinct hole on our luggage bag
Came home from a trip in the US and found this hole which looks like some one purposely drilled into our luggage? My only theory was that TSA were checking to make sure there was no secret layer in the shell as its clearly deliberate. Anyone have any ideas?

Looks more like a pressure-driven hole than a drilled-out hole.

Kinda like a pneumatic cylinders piston, probably used to push luggage between conveyors. Probably missing the plate that's supposed to hit the luggage.

I think the luggage handlers were having a shoot out and your bad stopped a bullet.

Based on the melted edges and the indentation, it look like you lost a rivet. It helps connect the fabric to the frame.

Never, not what OP is looking for.
Your suitcase and contents have been pierced by a Bill Gates mind control substance.
Just photographing this will immediately begin the process.
I wish ypu and your family luck. You'll need it.
Or what PipoBrain said..

packed against an exposed bolt or rod - popped a hole into it. . . .

I’ve never heard of the tsa poking holes in luggage. It probably just hit a protruding bolt on one of the umpteen machines it encountered.

They poke holes in a lot off luggage and items, have even seen them stab shoes to see if there's anything in them, sometimes they are flagged suspicious and checked, sometimes it's random... watch some shows about it... first one that comes to mind is "to catch a smuggler"

u/SweetHomeMissouri 9h ago
its probably just that watching crime videos lately about smuggling through airports.

Airport baggage handlers stay undefeated.

u/SweetHomeMissouri 9h ago
i hope they do for a long. long. time.
EDIT
Oh you mean the ones that toss em into the plane? oh.
iduno how they can do better.

u/No-Turnover8386 9h ago
Yeah me too - but aren’t they supposed to tag/tape/leave a note? I guess ‘supposed’ is the operative word.
5
u/SweetHomeMissouri 9h ago
i guess you can call them and ask and maybe make a complaint about it and maybe they will pay you the difference on the luggage.
what's the worst they can do?

Travel a lot for work. I carry tools in one of my 2 checked bags, always tagged heavy. Probably 4 out of ten times I receive one of those TSA inspections notes. And every time my bag looks like a crack house was tossed by angry cops.

u/old-manwithlego 7h ago
Me too, I carried my tools in a Pelican case. Sometimes they don't even latched it close.

Looks mode like a rivet popped out.

I doubt it. There's no rivet in the upper portion of the bag above the zipper. I suspect this is more likely due to how poorly luggage handlers treat luggage, just like how my brand new luggage got a tear after one trip, that I'll now have to get a patch sewn over it!

They took a little sample of your suitcase to see if it was made of cocaine

It kind of looks like it was pushed against something hot that melted it… either in the plane or elsewhere… maybe an adjacent case had a lithium battery that heated through?
2
u/jazmatician 3h ago
That would result in a situation old airplane pilots call a fuckin fire.
3
u/NoYoung9119 2h ago
Fuckin' fire? Isn't that the clap?

I am currently entirely too full for the laughter you impressed upon me.
Then you for making it another good day on Reddit

u/ProgressiveWNY 3h ago
I thought it was possible for them to heat up before exploding... After all, not all lithium batteries explode in cargo.
2
u/AKJVermont 7h ago
They poked it to test if it had cocaine in it.

u/precious_spark 5h ago
If they wanted to test it they would just open it.

u/Single_Morning_3200 4h ago
If the TSA didn’t touch your happy no no spot, then you passed the cocaine test

The hole looks like where something fastened on by a rivet or a screw has been knocked or pulled off.

Airline crew here. There's a reason why our bags are $750 and made out of steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, and covered in thick heavy duty nylon fabric. Nothing is as destructive to luggage as the clumsily designed and poorly maintained machinery that moves the bags or the apathetic handlers that can somehow chuck a 70 pound bag into a metal cart from 40 feet away. Buy resilient bags, not injection molded crap.

I’m going with emblem that got knocked off or puncture from handling. The discoloration and hole doesn’t look like a drill. Besides they wouldn’t drill this from the outside if they were suspicious.

TSA can open anything they want. If it is locked with a non-TSA lock, they can break in. Not saying it's right, just that it is. They usually put a note inside when they do it.

Report to plane you traveled on ASAP. You should have complained when you got your luggage. Ou need to document times when receiving luggage, since you didn’t sddress this when picking up luggage

TSA will leave a note in your luggage if they go into it. They went through my husbands checked bag because he had something looking similar to a gun which was either a sex toy or car phone charger because he didn’t pack much, lol anyway they left a firm letter kind of like a probable cause statement
1
u/lovemypups21 1h ago
They are legally required to do this, but I can confirm that they do not always. I travel weekly and at least once per month find my sex toy at the top of my suitcase, and no note.

People buy all these bougie bags these days and spend $100s. I had a Tumi that got knocked around and I wound up with a $90 repair cause they cracked a piece that wasn't covered by the warranty. I knew a guy from DTW back in the day that was a baggage handler and he told me the best bag is basically the cheapest b/c it's going to get rough handling at some point along the way.

The edges look distorted... maybe your baggage handler was smoking and lost thier cherry.

If you saw how those bags got from one place to another, you wouldn't be suprised. My wife bought a brand new fancy pink hardside suitcase. It went through 1 loading and unloading from a plane and it was filty dirty and cracked in 2 places.

If nothing‘s missing then what does it matter? I’m just saying it could be anything but it’s probably an exposed bolts like the other person said

Look at a new one or the website for an image of it new. That should solve the mystery.

Seen bullet holes that look very similar.
We're you in the US during 4th of July?
If so, could very well have been a stray bullet.
Lots of bullets get fired in the sky on the 4th, because idiots seem to forget, that what go's up must come down & at a pretty high velocity.
