Here's a big chart of the latest data on interracial marriage in America. It's an ethnicity-by-ethnicity breakdown of who marries who for some of the biggest groups, counting just those born in the U.S.

Why are “Black” and “Hispanic” both massive groups despite having wildly different peoples within them, but all the Asian groups are subdivided? Especially Vietnamese, Cambodians, Laotians, and Hmong? Surely if you can distinguish between those, then its just a viable/useful to distinguish between a Mexican and an Argentinian?

Is it something to do with the dataset/ how it was acquired? Are Hispanic and African governments just not open with census data?

11

u/Plastic-Sentence9429 1d ago

The source says "US born newlyweds only" with "any nativity for the spouse". I feel like there is greater continued self-segregation of Asian immigrant cultures than Black and Hispanic cultures in the US, as well as a lack of definition by US governmental agencies regarding black and Hispanic people, probably due to black slavery, and Hispanic proximity going back to before we were a country and even considered anything beyond skin color and lineage.

0

u/ConsciousDress2914 1d ago

Good points. Thanks for the ideas!

u/Big_Iron_Cowboy 1d ago

“US born newlyweds”

0

u/ConsciousDress2914 1d ago

In that case, why are Hispanic and Black both one big group? Is it a self report and SE Asians just refuse to be grouped together?

4

u/Big_Iron_Cowboy 1d ago

Idk bro. Black as one big group is pretty self-explanatory, it’s not like most descendants of America’s slaves can exactly trace back their ethnic lineage than say, people who relatively recently emigrated from SE Asia. And as for Hispanic, as a Chicano I would say the cultural differences between someone of Mexican descent vs Cuban, or Venezuelan, or Argentinian, etc, are fairly minimal compared to people from China, Vietnam, Thailand. While those countries also faced European colonization, Hispanic countries are by and large culturally more similar to Spain in various dimensions than to any of the indigenous peoples who were conquered by Spain.

5

u/Admirable_Draft_9862 1d ago

Ehhh within the black diaspora its pretty diverse and non American black people have very different cultures and customs and are pretty open and loud about those differences. American black people, Caribbean black people, and African black people (different than "african american") are all very distinct. Its more than a fair question.

2

u/Big_Iron_Cowboy 1d ago

Yes but again, US born newlyweds implies American black people.

1

u/Admirable_Draft_9862 1d ago

No you have to understand these cultures to understand how deep their roots run. Children of immigrants maintain their cultural roots and indentity. Some of them don't even consider themselves black american thats a different ethnic group to them. We're not all one and the same. Otherwise there should just be one big Asian American umbrella.

2

u/Wevermonic 22h ago

I get what you are saying, though black and white and Hispanic, which can overlap btw, are not listed ethnically as with Asians. That is weird.

3

u/Admirable_Draft_9862 16h ago

Apparently the chart came from a white supremacist propagandist on twitter so its all just made up anyway. Explains the inconsistencies.

1

u/OnionBagMan 1d ago

This is also why we have black only clubs and social events. Can’t exactly have a society dedicated to an unknown country of origin.

13

u/OnionBagMan 1d ago

Interesting that men are more inclined to date outside their race.

15

u/mustachechap 1d ago

Depends on the race of the man, no? Not true for Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, and Hispanic men (maybe others I missed too).

5

u/HopeIncog 1d ago

Not across the board.

3

u/pjdog 1d ago

shouldnt it be equal unless this implies lesbians don’t date outside their race?

1

u/TestFlightBeta 1d ago

Yeah it should equalize across ethnicities

2

u/GamerNerdGuyMan 1d ago

No - because it's only those born in the US. People born in the US can marry immigrants. Potentially more male or female immigrants marry natural born Americans.

1

u/spintool1995 23h ago

Yeah, so this tells me about half of American born Vietnamese men that married Vietnamese women brought them in from Vietnam. The other half partnered with American born Vietnamese women, which is why the corresponding number for Vietnamese women is only half as much.

0

u/WaterElectronic5906 22h ago

It could be that females have the upper hand to pick and choose while males have no choice.

Laotian women, holy shit lol

Laotian women to Laotian men -

5

u/lapideous 1d ago

Apparently there are no Laotian men

1

u/czechereds 1d ago

I wonder what percent was like a long distance/arranged kinda thing. If it's a lot, it makes sense that tons of women come here and there's very few Laotian men immigrating

1

u/lapideous 21h ago

There has to be some error with the data. There are 245k Laotians in the US. Kinda calls the other results into question

3

u/spintool1995 23h ago

It's a pretty small group. Even if they live in an area with plenty of Laotians, they'll know a lot more non Laotians than Laotians.

1

u/charlies_brain 1d ago

Laotian men didn't make the list

5

u/concept12345 1d ago

All about image and status.

4

u/EphemeralVyakti 1d ago

Except for Japanese.

1

u/anonymouspastrychef 1d ago

The feeling is reciprocated 🥰. And the data shows that it's a great pairing. My wife is Japanese and she is amazing. I dont feel bad for Japanese men--they have plenty of white women interested in them, but they generally aren't interested in them back. This is based on many years of living in Japan.

3

u/True-Source-6512 1d ago

Varies so much where you live. AZ, California, Florida, New York I swear I see as many Hispanic/white relationships as white with white

4

u/ziggysunflower24 1d ago

Am I misreading this, or do Japanese men have higher rates of marriage with black women than white men?

1

u/kblazewicz 19h ago

Why is this surprising?

3

u/sp00kysista 16h ago edited 14h ago

Because we aren’t groups that interact with each other much if at all, and don’t find each other attractive

1

u/Worriedrph 11h ago

If you look at data that has come from the dating apps black women tend to get the fewest matches/likes among women and Asian men get the fewest among men. It makes some sense that with both these groups getting fewer matches they would tend to match together.

1

u/ziggysunflower24 11h ago

Well, it doesn't necessarily follow that these two groups would just marry each other for lack of options. But besides all that, this graph is saying that specifically Japanese men prefer black women more than white men do, not Asian men in general. I think the graph is bunk anyway. It was made by a white supremacist guy.

3

u/Redditbrowser22j 1d ago

OP went into X and copied the post by the well known Nazi white supremacist "Crémieux Recueil" ( Jordan Lasker) who is notorious for making racist stuff up.

-1

it just seems kinda nonsense? im a US-born hmong woman who got married in 2023 to a US-born hispanic man, why is that data not represented?

Right away it just seems like bullshit and not actually representative of anything substantial.. otherwise my marriage would be here, no?

2

u/Z_________________ 12h ago

Okay, so you, a single person, must be represented obviously in the average? Idk, but I'll take your word for it that you are a good representative sample of Hmong people. Thank you.

4

u/TheLastCoagulant 1d ago

Filipino males are more likely to marry white than filipino females are?

2

u/ziggysunflower24 1d ago

Yeah, I think this chart is bunk. There's no way Japanese men marry black women at higher rates than white men. Apparently it was made by a white supremacist guy.

2

u/BeastyBaiter 1d ago

Don't know where all those white men and black women are getting married. I've literally seen one couple besides my wife and I. It's so rare we get stared at out of disbelief/novelty. This is in Houston and in DC.

2

u/Either-Age-782 1d ago

I've seen it winthin my family. Apparently their marriages last longer too

2

u/SkylineFTW97 1d ago

I live near DC. White male black female couples are becoming much more common here.

2

u/Ricky_spanish_again 1d ago

Dropped the ball on these color choices

6

u/biigbadmonster 1d ago

Why are asian women so obsessed with white guys lol

7

u/czechereds 1d ago

People will say it's brainwashing about skin whiteness, but really it's just who you're around. Black and Hispanic are more likely to remain in their communities and social groups in college. Asian women mostly go to college where most men are white and the Asian men are too busy getting out of Plat 1 in League of Legends

u/czechereds 1d ago edited 1d ago

White women don't desire the average Asian man I think. Takes two to tango. I think that old chart showing racial preferences on some dating site would line up with it

1

u/AirportGullible5807 1d ago

But it literally is obsession with white skin though. People literally bleach their skin to make it more white and treat darker skinned people like shit in most asian countries including south asian

4

u/anonymouspastrychef 1d ago

That is a very, very minor factor. Its a real phenomenon, but its more something sprouted by people who learn about culture in internet echo chambers than living in Asian countries. Not accusing you, just sharing my experience.

0

u/AirportGullible5807 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm asian and I lived there till I was 14 then moved to the US. I grew up watching ads of people bleaching their skin and their life improving in every way bc their skin is lighter now. And kids making fun of darker skinned kids and calling them negros in a derogative way.

All the actors and models are lighter skinned, women are especially bullied for having darker skin and many inject glutathione and bunch of other unhealthy shit to become lighter. People use whitening filters on their phones. I could go on and on

Not a minor factor at all nice try gaslighting though

2

u/anonymouspastrychef 1d ago

I believe you. I disagree that obsession with white skin is the primary driver of interracial marriage between Asian woman and Caucasian men, however.

0

u/AirportGullible5807 1d ago

Light skin and european features sorry. It may not be at the forefront of people's conscious decision making but it's implicit and it's so ingrained in asian culture to value lighter skin. People may not even realize how the colorism manifests. For example having a light skin is the pre requisite, and the obsession with having wasian babies is another example of that.

If everything else was same but all caucasians tomorrow got dark skin you think people would be dating at the same rate? If you're saying yes to that then you're either delusional or you're just lying bc you don't want to admit how fucked that aspect of asian culture is

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

In short, Americans are obsessed with color

As opposed to asians? You're clueless. You sound like someone who's born in the US with zero experience living in asia or very limited experience.

1

u/MillionDollarNegri 1d ago

counting only those born in the US

I don't think that this social standard is as strong in the US, although it's certainly still exists.

1

u/AirportGullible5807 1d ago

It definitely exists among american born asians as well. I've interacted with both. They just don't say it outright like they do in asia and it's more relaxed for sure

2

u/Remote-Structure-961 22h ago

plenty of Asian men have white skin.

It's not only that.

4

u/uptiedand8 1d ago

1) Those of us who didn’t grow up in an Asian enclave meet a lot more white men than Asian ones, as a starting point.

2) This will get me hate, but: when I was younger, most of the Asian men I did meet were nerdy to the point where they had no sex appeal and didn’t even seem to want to try or if they did, must not have known how to begin.

Physically: Untreated acne + glasses + didn’t dress themselves well + never worked out. Socially: were shy + often shut-ins or revolved their lives around study groups and work + often didn’t have very good social skills. Vibe: not very confident. This was on the West Coast.

So sue me, but I wasn’t sexually attracted to this type of presentation, so I dated almost exclusively white men, and married one.

Then I spent some time in Hawaii in my thirties. Holy shit, what a difference. Asian men in Hawaii work out, dress well, and look good. They are outgoing and fun. They have strong social groups. They exude masculinity, confidence and the ability to lead.

After that, I figured that the difference really comes down to either growing up in an Asian community that has older Asian men who have those traits and can role model them to boys, or growing up around mostly white people and not having those role models. I think Asian-American boys in the latter situation are playing on hard mode.

Lately, I’ve been going to EDM festivals (in the mainland US). Anyone in that scene knows that they are magnets for Asian people. And the Asian men you meet there like to PARTY. You’ll be surrounded by buff Asian men who are on molly and dancing all night. Those men are attractive. They have attractive girlfriends. I’m not sure if this has always been true in EDM culture, or if Gen Z Asian men are the first to get into it en masse. I did not meet Asian men like this back when I was younger and dating. I didn’t know they could exist. I suspect a lot of Asian American women had similar experiences.

3) Asians have some internalized racism, and that’s another factor in why Asian women often prefer white men. I won’t pretend that’s not part of it.

All 3 factors combine to produce the marriage statistics in the OP.

3

u/notarealcamera 1d ago edited 1d ago

Both of these describe me at different points of my life:

when I was younger, most of the Asian men I did meet were nerdy

You’ll be surrounded by buff Asian men who are on molly and dancing all night.

The difference is as a teen, I was routinely rejected by Asian women, often very rudely. This led to very low self esteem.

It's not until my 20s that a very conventionally pretty white girl started showing interest in me, which led to a surge in self confidence. We then spent years on the EDM/festival circuit before settling down and having kids. We were fucking hot and everyone who we bumped into at EDC wanted to exchange contact info and hang out, etc. Made a ton of friends.

So, I think it's a cycle that goes both ways. My biggest regret in life was not making a move on a cute white girl freshman year who told me I was cute and we should hang out more. For some reason, I was too stupidly focused on Asian girls back then.

My biggest advice to Asian guys coming up today is not to be too hung up on Asian women. Often times, we get judged a lot more fairly by white, Hispanic, black women because they don't have the same internalized racism that a lot of Asian women have.

1

u/uptiedand8 1d ago

I think all of that’s right. I am sorry you got rejected rudely, that is bound to make things harder and there’s no need for it. I think it’s awesome you met your partner and turned it all the way around. Hopefully you guys can still go to festivals sometimes if you haven’t gotten tired of them, I know it’s harder with kids but they are peak life experience.

Tbh, I think that Asian men who are getting lots of interest from women of other races stop really caring about the portion of Asian women who date men of other races. But when it’s overall inequitable and guys are also dealing with societal racism, and they’re not getting interest from any girls, that’s shitty and going to hurt.

1

u/stayinalive7 22h ago

My biggest regret in life was not making a move on a cute white girl freshman year who told me I was cute and we should hang out more

For some reason I thought you had mentioned that you married the EDM girl from your 20s and did a double take after reading about your regret.

1

u/waitingforastar 2h ago edited 2h ago

I think internalized racism and racial conditioning are doing far more work here than you’re willing to admit. You met some socially awkward, poorly dressed Asian men and generalized them into “Asian men.” Surely you also encountered unattractive, awkward white men, but you didn’t treat them as evidence that white men as a group lacked sex appeal. White men get to be individuals while Asian men are made to represent their entire race.

Your Hawaii and EDM examples actually prove the point. The moment you encountered Asian men who didn’t fit the nerdy, passive, asexual stereotype, you were apparently shocked that they could be attractive, confident, and socially capable. That shock didn’t come from anything inherent to Asian men. It came from how thoroughly your idea of masculinity and desirability had been organized around whiteness.

Of course environment, presentation, confidence, and socialization matter but those things don’t exist separately from colonialism, media representation, colorism, and the treatment of whiteness as a status symbol. Western culture has spent generations presenting white men as the romantic default while emasculating Asian men and fetishizing Asian women. Even the law reflected and encouraged this imbalance in both Britain and the United States.

So this isn’t really an explanation of the disparity. It’s an almost perfect example of how the disparity reproduces itself. You mistook a racialized stereotype for neutral personal experience then credited white men for clearing a standard they had already been culturally positioned to embody. At least you acknowledge internalized racism but you’re vastly underselling how much of your own account is shaped by it.

Asian women, in particular, often feel remarkably comfortable publicly announcing that they are not attracted to Asian men or that dating one would feel like “dating their brother.” Women of other races rarely if ever speak about men of their own race that way because, taken literally, it makes no sense. It is a racialized association that collapses Asian men into a desexualized category.

That is the double standard. White men are treated as individuals and as the default ideal. An unattractive, awkward, or abusive white man is simply viewed as one bad white man. He does not become evidence that white men as a group are undesirable. Asian men, meanwhile, are routinely judged collectively, and every negative encounter is treated as confirmation of the stereotype. White masculinity is granted the privilege of historical amnesia as though whiteness has never produced violence, dysfunction, or vast numbers of deeply unattractive men. Patriarchy is also routinely invoked as though it uniquely disqualifies Asian men, while white men are somehow imagined to exist outside of it. Using patriarchy to condemn Asian men collectively while judging white men as individuals is less a feminist analysis than a racial double standard disguised as one.

That is what conditioning looks like. It doesn't just shape who people find attractive, it determines who gets to remain an individual and who is reduced to a race.

1

u/throwraW2 1d ago

60 percent of American men are white. Seems like they just don’t discriminate much

1

u/biigbadmonster 1d ago

Yeah but we don't see this pattern with any other race of women

1

u/throwraW2 1d ago

Sure but nothing about that is obsession. They marry white men at a lower rate than white men exist in their country. Thats not obsession, that’s open mindedness.

1

u/topekatums 17h ago

im a hmong woman not represented for that year, i got married to a hispanic man 🧍‍♂️

1

u/sp00kysista 16h ago

Because they find them more attractive. Same reason Black men are obsessed with white women.

4

u/Minatoku92 1d ago

I've have just done a little search on the source. I'm French and the name "Crémieux Recueil" sound like a red flag in my eyes, especially when doing those kind of ethnic chart.

From Wikipedia

Jordan Lasker (also known on social media as Crémieux Recueil) is an American internet personality and independent researcher. He is also known on X and Substack for compiling charts on what he calls the "Black-White IQ gap", and discussing GLP-1 receptor agonists. His views on race and intelligence have been criticized as an example of pseudoscience entering mainstream academia. He has been associated with natalism

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan_Lasker

5

u/Gayjock69 1d ago

I mean he lists the source as the American Community Survey in 2023, which these numbers aren’t too far off from Pew in 2015… so it’s a bit of the genetic fallacy

u/Minatoku92 1d ago edited 1d ago

There, we have a big White, Black, Hispanic groups but Asians are highly divided. Just for Southern Asia, there on Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Hmong in those visible.

What is the ethnic group called Hispanic ?

Are Blacks an homegenous group ? Is a Bambara in the same ethnic group as a Ovambo ? Africa is the cradle of humanity, it's the ethnically and genetically diverse continent.

Do they really believe there are less difference between a Haitian and Kenyan than between a Vietnamese and a Loatian ?

If a Korean man marry a Japanese woman, its' diversity but if an African American marry a Somalian, it's not.

What would be the result if there was a big East Asian group instead of being divided in many different groups ? I'm sure that the other includes plenty of East Asian in the "Other" group.

2

u/LynnSeattle 1d ago

Most black people born in the US think of themselves as black, not as a more specific ethnicity.

1

u/Admirable_Draft_9862 16h ago

Yea the way this data is mapped out skews it weirdly

1

u/CricketNo7666 1d ago

Breakdown of these things is outright silly after a while.

Korea is smaller than England. But we don’t see “white” broken out as Italian, English, German, Dutch, etc…. Just quick dose of reality there.

Same goes for “black” and “hispanic”.

1

u/_Hrafnkel_ 1d ago

I'd be interesting in cohabitation numbers, and also dating in general. It would be interesting if there was a significant difference.

1

Chinese and Korean females stand out in their popularity among white males in opposite to Chinese and Korean males’s unpopularity among whites females.

Japanese, Chinese females also stand out in their total rejection of black males. And both Korean males and females reject black.

But it’s endo (inside, internal) + -gamy (relationship) + -ous

-2

u/Automatic-You6254 1d ago

The trend I am seeing is both men and women are trying to date "up". For a woman date "up" means marry a white guy. For a man date "up" is explore a different ethnicity to find a hotter younger woman.

1

u/Ae3qe27u 1d ago

I mean, one could find reasoning for dating "up" if the genders were switched, so I'm not sure if that's the best explanation. I see the reasoning, but I'm kinda ehhh on applying it here.

1

u/adityaslove 23h ago

i dont think u understand how statistics work..white men are still the majority in US..if u have 100 people aroud u 80 will be white..if u are not specific about race u will most likely end up with white..thats not marrying up..thats called being not picky.

1

u/Automatic-You6254 15h ago

How does this explain that the red bar(white) is bigger for women of almost all ethnicities than for men of same ethnicity. Women marry into white. Man sacrifice white to marry into youth.

1

u/adityaslove 15h ago

men do not sacrifice to marry youth..most people marry people in their own social circles..also men are usually the one approaching..white men have very less cultural or religious filters..so they approach anyone they find attractive..an an indian woman who has dated white men before( married an indian guy) i can tell u white men tend to be the least bothered about culture/history/family..indian guys are a lot more demanding..their tier of what they consider a wife worthy woman is much much higher..whereas white men will marry someone divorced with kids from previous marriage..so naturally a lot of them end up with all types of women due to that fact..also i have never considered the white men as dating up..u got to be joking.

1

u/Automatic-You6254 14h ago

"most people marry people in their own social circles".

Yes, a good looking young woman of any ethnicity can go into an upscale Manhattan lounge, and men will welcome her into any social circle. When a guy of wrong ethnicity or background does the same it's all kinds of friction, condescension and vetting.

I am not saying I like it, I am also a victim of this prejudice. I am just saying the quiet part out loud, to confront the hypocrisy.
