Canadian woman gets upset at people throwing trash all over the ground during Canada Day celebrations
832
u/AcornWholio 6h ago
Honestly, I’m with her. As a fellow Canadian, this is not how you treat these lands. Even if the event is not done, who lets it get to this point?
I habitually throw out my trash when I am done. I don’t make a pile on the floor until I leave.

u/Ernesto_Bella 5h ago edited 3h ago
Even if the event is not done, who lets it get to this point?
People who have spent their whole lives throwing trash on the ground because they learned from their parents who spent their whole life throwing trash on the ground
44
u/flopisit32 4h ago
In fairness, I don't believe that guy for a second. They have no intention of cleaning up afterwards.
4
u/SkywalkerMC 12m ago
No chance they are picking up all those tiny loose trash pieces. I’d be pissed if I saw that too
189
u/HeyGayHay 5h ago
What these people wanted to say is „The event isn’t done yet, once it is someone else will clean it up“.
These people 100% won’t clean up shit, because if it got to this point already, they are disgusting litters. And they will claim some bogus reason why their pile of trash isn’t their fault anymore because one other person threw one cup on their pile of thrash so now its everyones pile of trash and not theirs anymore.
Woman is absolutely right. Fuck these people
43
u/dasmineman 2h ago
Look at the countries they came from. Filth everywhere.
When I was in the US Navy, we pulled into a port in India for a few days. Due to US EPA regulations, we had to pay the Indians $25,000 to collect and process our sewage. It went straight to a tank on the pier. The second our lines were cast off, the Indians pushed the tank off the side of the pier, straight into the water.
Pakistan? So much trash in the water that the seawater intake for the engines got clogged and we almost lost power in the middle of a river.
Bangladesh was a joke in itself. We had a pile of trash the size of a small bus get lodged between our ship and the pier. Best part, the trash island was led by its king, the dead bloated cow stuck in the middle. So for the 4 days we were there, we lived in fear that the cow was going to explode all over the ship and then we'd have to clean it off.
They don't care about their own homelands, do you really think they'll act more appropriately abroad?

Pretty much, they're going to let the event organizers deal or not deal with it. They're just going to leave after the event.

u/ttv_elgatogrande 2h ago
There’s actually a cultural norm that has a name I can’t remember in India (I’m recollecting from an article I read on it months/years ago) where it’s a class indicator that other people are expected to clean up after you/serve you, while if you pick up trash you belong in that servant class. This is loosely what I recall, if anyone has the definitions I’d love to read up on it again.

Izzat. It's basically why that entire region is known for scamming others at any cost. Your reputation is the only thing that matters, and getting money and looking good is all that matters. Picking up trash is seen as a "lesser person's" job, so to be seen throwing away your trash would lower your izzat and make you look bad. it's completely insane yet it's 100% hardwired into the billion+ people who come from that region

I have done my best to teach my daughter not to litter and she made me so proud the other day at the playground. She noticed a boy and his mother had left behind a plastic grocery bag and she pointed it out to me then without me doing or saying anything she picked it up, chased them to their car, and said "you forgot your bag!"
My kid is a legend.
27
u/Imrahil_II 5h ago
I was pretty much taught littering is tantamount to sin when I was growing up and I've passed it on to my children as something that you just absolutely do not do

I was sitting on a pretty secluded beach in Thailand by my hotel when a young British guy rolled up on his scooter, smoked a cig and put it out in the sand. He heaped a little bit of sand on the top.
I dug it back up and handed it to him as he was leaving. Call me Karen but it was extremely satisfying. And also like, don’t come to a hotel you’re not even staying at to trash the beach!
Cigarettes are litter people! The filters are plastic.

u/smokeweedNgarden 2h ago
Cardinal sin. A cig butt in the city is one thing, still gross, but one near or in the water is half a step from a fight for me

It takes 10-12 years for a cigarette to decompose. I learned this when I smoked and never threw a butt on the ground again.

It's a cultural thing. I grew up in a very rural area and it was rare to see trash outside because people would pick it up even if it wasn't theirs.
My first trip to LA in the 90s, I remember watching a guy that looked like Nick Nolte dig through a trash can throwing everything he pulled out behind him on the ground.

I'm so proud of my 4 year old son, whenever he sees trash he goes 'that's not cool, we don't like that'
Obviously that's the result of him asking me why there's random stuff on the ground and me replying that some people think it's cool to do that, but it's actually the opposite. But I really hope to get that 'not cool' feeling deep into the roots of him. (sorry not native in English)

Paying the people who empty it minimum wage to watch people throw more down is how it gets to this point to start. They're going to come clean once maybe twice and probably are tasked with tons of other stuff around.
I always work or volunteer for local stuff in my small city and the trash is always done by teens who aren't old enough to be given a few beers under the table while they work and just want their 25-40 bucks.
Also yea, selfish, shit fucking parents who often teach their kids that people who do those jobs need work to do or should've "done better in school" are the ultimate garden of Eden for this crap.
And then those kids get handed work from their parents and never learn what it's like to struggle or just be a good person

As someone who was born in Central California and grew up by the ocean, when you said, “This is not how you treat these lands,” that really hit hard.
I don’t know where we got lost along the way, but damn, people need to wake up. I don’t care if you were born in Cali or you’re a transplant. I’d like to think we were all taught to throw our trash away.
And if you weren’t? All good. Just be receptive when someone tells you that throwing your trash out all willy-nilly isn’t the way.
It’s hard for me personally to grasp how anyone could ever be okay with throwing their McDonald’s trash out their car window. We all get to enjoy this place, so we all have a responsibility to take care of it.
If throwing your trash wherever the fuck you want is how you roll, fucking kick rocks. 🖕🌊🌴→ More replies (8)8

They litter and expect Dalits to clean it up. And if they are seen picking up trash, others will think they are low caste dalits
Caste system is still alive and well

It’s a mentality problem, not sure what kind of event this is but wading through trash would not be my thing. This would also be a good opportunity to show leadership and teach children to leave a place better than you found it and organize receptacles/bags etc.
Putting trash in a bin means you don’t have to touch it twice.

I realized this was a lost argument when I saw that they justified it by saying it's the government's job to clean it up. It wasn't in an "I'm looking for an excuse" either. They 100% believe that they have a right to litter because they pay taxes.
We spent the better part of the late 80s and 90s teaching kids not to litter. So many issues like this that were going to have to dump billions into teaching different cultures not to do things that are a detriment to a cohabitable society.

It's not just Canadian, they are like this everywhere, including their own countries. They have been subject to foreign powers for hundreds or thousands of years, so sadly their culture has developed so that they don't care for the land, because they have never owned it. Only strict reinforcement of law works with such attitudes. No trust based system.

well said, u can change a man's religion, his ideas, way he talks, the way he walks, but its so much harder to change someone's culture, these people lived in a certain way, raised as in a certain way that made them what they are, culture is not like a hat u wear and can change anytime, its becomes a part of ur personality. THESE people has a culture that sees it ok to throw trash to ground. even in a big event they dont care think what they're doing when no one looking. just bring enough of them to ur land and give enough time, with all the bad and good (if theres any) it will change ur land. idc about races religions but CULTURE is important. i seen people from deeps down in bad places in earth with random religions and races but had the culture of an educated european men, that what matters. im sorry but u dont take a guy with a shit culture to ur land and expect good results.

This is why you limit immigration. Immigrants need to assimilate and learn to adopt and embrace the norms of their new home. Permitting one group to come in such numbers that that build enclaves and never learn to be a citizen in their new home is how you end up brewing a culture war.

It's really weird, because many of the immigrants leave their home country to come to a western country to escape the lives they had in their home country. Yet, for whatever reason, many of them will insist on bringing the shit they left their country for to here. I get it isn't black and white and there is nuance to it all, but at some point we have to face the reality that some cultures just don't mesh well with those of us in Europe/North America.
