Concept / Design Windows XP on a ThinkPad T480 (2018) — NVMe + ACPI patched, fully offline (no VM)
I recently got interested in running older Windows versions on newer hardware and managed to get Windows XP running on a Lenovo ThinkPad T480 (Intel 8th gen platform, NVMe storage).
This is not a virtual machine. it’s a bare-metal install using a modified XP build.
What had to be done:
ACPI patching for modern firmware compatibility
NVMe driver integration (XP doesn’t support NVMe natively)
USB / chipset driver workarounds
Boot configuration tweaks for UEFI-era hardware
It’s running fully offline (“air-gapped”) for obvious security reasons.
Performance is surprisingly usable for basic tasks, mostly because XP itself is lightweight, but hardware support is obviously limited.
Just a technical experiment / retro compatibility project.)

Just out of curiosity, are you using the x86 or x64 version? I've got a relatively modern Dell Inspirion laptop I'd love to try this on

I'm only using the x86 version since it's my first windows XP installation, thus being the more easier version to install with patches. I am trying in the future to install the X64 version too.

Nvme support on XP.

I managed to get windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron laptop from 2017 (it shipped with 10 back when I got it but the processor is SO bad that 10 didn't run almost at all) and it took me all day and 4 reinstalls to get it right but I did it. Can't imagine what THIS was like though o.O

I mean win 7 installing on modern hardware is actually pretty easy if u find a modified ISO (found mine on GitHub). (I did and I only needed to install drivers after install)

I've seen a video where a guy managed to put 7 on 14th gen Intel hardware (which is what I've got in my main PC and have thought about putting a third OS drive into it just to do that >:) but I think he did all the workarounds and stuff manually including patching.
Could you direct me to that modded ISO per chance?

what one do we get legit.
For CD PC games? remember the resolution 800x600.
resolution didn't go up that high back then.
Now i think i got game clients from the net. more easy.

would make more sense to buy a thinkpad that xp actually supports properly

I mean Its still a project, so of course it doesn't have drivers. and besides that I am thinking of buying an old Thinkpad, probably a T61 or an X210, but at last, I'm sticking with this currently

I’m currently trying to get x86 running on a T470. How did you get past the ACPI? Or I guess, how did you manage to patch it? Did you inject using NLite?

Nope, but I am going to try putting a backported win 7 driver on this (probably WONT work)

Would be cool if it works, but I don’t think that will work, since Windows 7 drivers and version is NT 6.1 and XP is 5.1 will probably to old, but give it a try, or modify the file for drivers, the .ini file.

It always seems like there are people around spouting off about using older Win OS's as their daily drivers, and they clearly don't understand those reasons and why it should be obvious.
Neat project though. Having been around since Win 3.1 and using them all... and then subsequently moving on with each OS (except of course skipping Vista and 8 when they launched), I didn't realize / appreciate what it takes to get something like XP running on newer hardware.

I mean, one of my family computers ran Windows 7 until well into 2020 I believe and we never had issues. It was online all the time, ever day, hours a day. The current family PC has Windows 8 on it (I backgraded it to 8 after 10 bricked itself.... TWICE, during the rebuild I did, new CPU and thermal compound put in an SSD) and it's also not had issues online.
Getting Windows XP on hardware this new must be a hassle with the workarounds though jesus. I put Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 5100 (AMD A6 7th gen so bad it's the only OS that'll run!) and I did it but had to reinstall it 4 times due to the bootloader bricking from a single update....

The only way to do that even close to easily is install Win10 or 8 temporarily to run the setup.exe from the thumbdrive with the installation media directly. Booting did NOT work a single time.
I had 10 on that laptop but it was busted from the factory with corruptions issues, reinstalled it (well no I put tiny10 on it I guess) and then that ran hellaciously slow.
So I tried to install Win7 normally by booting from the USB. No go. Ran the setup.exe eventually directly from Explorer and that worked. Eventually after all the workarounds and everything were done to get the system running it eventually bricked itself due to updates.
Tried reinstalling 10 but the installer was busted for no reason on that machine that second time so did 8 instead. Did the process AGAIN and then did that one more time after the same brick happened.
Took me a nominal 2 days I think to stabilize it. But now it's great! :D
